What happens in the book:After a summer spent with the Dursleys, Harry isexcited to return to Hogwarts. An unexpected visitor, the house elf Dobby, tries in
vain to prevent Harry from returning to Hogwarts by getting him to illegally perform
magic outside of the school.
The Ministry of Magic blames Harry anyway, and the Dursleys conscate Harrys
boo!s and wand. "ncle #ernon puts bars on Harrys windows, imprisoning him in his
room. $red and %eorge &easley, 'ons brothers, rescue Harry from ( )rivet Drive
with their fathers *ying car. Harry spends the remainder of the summer at the
&easleys cramped but co+y home.
&hen Harry returns to Hogwarts, he reali+es he has developed a cult following.$ellow student olin reevy constantly ta!es pictures of him- %inny &easley, 'ons
sister, seems to have developed a crush on Harry- and professor %ilderoy oc!hart,
a pompous wi+ard, boasts about Harrys accomplishments and their nonexistent
rapport.
The trouble begins when someone opens the hamber of /ecrets, hidden under the
dungeons of Hogwarts. The hamber is home to a 0asilis!, a sna!e1li!e monster

that attac!s Muggle1born students, turning them into stone. 0rowsing through the
restricted section in the library archives, 'on, Hermione and Harry learn that the
hamber was built by /ala+ar /lytherin and can be opened only by his pure1blood
heir. Harry fears that he himself may be /lytherins heir since he can spea! the
sna!e language, )arseltongue.
%inny disappears and 'on, Hermione and Harry try to nd her. /oon Harry and
%inny are trapped in the hamber of /ecrets with the 0asilis!. $aw!es,
Dumbledores faithful phoenix, delivers the /orting Hat to Harry, who draws the
sword of %ry2ndor from it. &ith the sword, Harry blinds and maims the 0asilis!,
which manages to bite Harry at the last minute. Dying from the 0asilis!s poison,
Harry is revived by $aw!es re3uvenating tears.
4t turns out that %inny had opened the hamber of /ecrets under the guidance of
#oldemort, who controlled her through his enchanted diary. %ilderoy oc!hart is
revealed as a fraud. Dobby is ucius Malfoys elf and was trying his best to protect
Harry from harm. Dumbledore puts to rest any suspicion that Harry is /lytherinsheir and ma!es his famous comment5 64t is our choices, Harry, that show what we
truly are, far more than our abilities.6 Harry could not have wielded the sword of
%ry2ndor if he did not truly belong to that house.
