the Louisiana Purchase

1804, Lewis and Clark’s Journey
o Lewis and Clark did nothing to harm the Native Americans, as far as I know.
1817
Americans began to compete with the Native Americans to hunt buffalo.
1824
The U.S. security of war establishes the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA).
The BIA oversees general policies regarding reservations and education of the Native Americans.
1825
A treaty is established between the Americans and the Sioux and the Oglala.
1830, the Indian Removal Act
• President Andrew Jackson decided that the only way to solve their Indian problem was to get rid of them.
• In 1835 the Cherokee native Americans were forced to sign a treaty that sold all their land.
• In 1838 the Cherokee were put on a road to go. It is now called the trail of tears.
