Re lection for the Feast of the Trans iguration Marcellino D'Ambrosio, Ph.D. One of the bible’s names for the God is “El Shaddai” or “God of the Mountains.” And from the very beginning of salva on history, we see that mountains are a special place to communicate with Heaven. Abraham ascends Mount Moriah to sacrifice his son (Gen 22). God reveals his name and to Moses on Mount Sinai (Ex 3). Moses later receives the 10 Commandments on

that very spot (Ex 31:18). Elijah returns to the same mountain, also known as Horeb, to hear what God’s “s ll, small voice” has to say (I Kg 19:8). So it is no surprise that Jesus brings his three “pillars” (Gal 2:9) with him up a high mountain to experience a special moment of communion with the Most High. It is this event that is commemorated by the Church each year on August 6. As tradi on has it, Mount Tabor is the place. Rising from the plain of Jezreel, its summit provides a spectacular view of all of Galilee. But what Jesus intends for Peter, James, and John to see is not the countryside. He wishes to provide them a glimpse of who He really is. Jesus is a carpenter from Nazareth, true. He must have looked much like any other Jewish cra sman of that me and place. That much could be seen by the naked eye. But this exterior appearance of his ordinary humanity was a veil hiding something more extraordinary–his glorious divinity. So on Tabor, God pulls back the veil. Moses and Elijah appear. These heroes

of old had long since passed out of this world and gone to God. So what does it say about Jesus’ iden ty that they appear on his right and his le ? Jesus’ clothes suddenly appear dazzlingly white, “whiter,” notes Mark, “than the work of any bleacher could make them.” The first reading for the Feast of the Transfigura on tells us the significance of this. Daniel sees a vision of the “Ancient One.” How does he appear? With clothing that is snow white. Then one like “a Son of Man” comes on the clouds to receive dominion, glory and kingship from the Ancient One. On Tabor, a cloud comes and overshadows Jesus and a Voice from the Cloud proclaims that this par cular Son of Man happens to be the beloved Son of God. What we have here is what is called a “theophany,” a manifesta on of God. It is revela on, first of all, of the divinity of Christ. What the creed says about him could be viewed as a commentary on this very episode: “God from God, light from light, true God from true God.” But it is also a manifesta on of the en re Trinity. The cloud that overshadows the apostles is the same one that overshadowed Mary. It is the glorious cloud of the Holy Spirit out of which the Father’s voice resounds. Father, Son, Holy Spirit, one God in three persons, prefigured in Daniel’s vision, revealed in the Transfigura on. Suddenly, a er a brief prostra on, they get up and see only Jesus, looking the way he had always looked. The veil was now back in place. The five senses are wonderful gi s from God. But they are limited nonetheless. O en we make the mistake of thinking that reality is nothing more than what our senses perceive it to be. So God gives us occasional mountaintop experiences, glimpses into reali es that our senses can’t normally detect. Jesus is always divine, regardless of his everyday human appearance. Jesus is always accompanied by saints and angels even when he appears to be alone. It was the en re Trinity who opened the eyes of the man born blind, even though it was only Jesus’ hand we could see touching the man’s eyes. Even though it’s much easier to forget such things and live according to what everybody can see, faith is remembering such moments of revela on and building our lives upon them. www.integratedcatholiclife.org

NABOŻEŃSTWO FATIMSKIE Niedziela, 13 sierpnia Zapraszamy na Nabożeństwo Fa mskie połączone z procesją różańcową wokół kościoła, które zostanie odprawione w niedziele, 13 sierpnia o godz. 7:00 wieczorem. Nabożeństwa fa mskie odprawiane w wielu parafiach i ośrodkach religijnych są wypełnieniem woli Maryi i odpowiedzią na Jej objawienie się i słowa w Fa mie wypowiedziane do trojga młodych wizjonerów w 1917 roku w Portugalii. Przez modlitwę różańcową rozważamy życie i postawę Matki Bożej oraz Jej Syna, Wcielonego Jednorodzonego Syna Bożego, który dla naszego zbawienia stał się człowiekiem i ofiarował swoje życie za nas na krzyżu.

światowej. Każdy z nas powinien stać się świadkiem

orędzia fa mskiego przez osobiste praktykowanie i

wypełnienie apelu, jaki Matka Boża skierowała do świata w

Fa mie. A przypomniała nam i pouczyła nas, iż Bóg pragnie

ratować grzeszników, świat i Kościół przez nabożeństwo do

Jej Niepokalanego Serca. Wezwanie Matki Bożej pozostaje

w dalszym ciągu aktualne i czeka na odpowiedź, wyrażoną

zadośćuczynieniem za innych, zwłaszcza za zatwardziałych

grzeszników. Aby świat ocalić, potrzebna jest wiedza o

objawieniach Matki Bożej w Fa mie i wiara w

nadprzyrodzoną moc tych objawień.

W związku ze zmaganiami cywilizacji życia z cywilizacją

śmierci trzeba pamiętać, że Matka Boża zapowiedziała

w objawieniach fa mskich: „Moje Niepokalane Serce

zwycięży”. Misja Fa my nie jest zakończona. Bóg nadal

poszukuje ludzi gotowych ofiarować się za innych, by

ratować świat.

6 sierpnia; Przemienienie Pańskie Co musisz wiedzieć o trans iguracji Czym jest transfiguracja? Słowo transfiguracja wywodzi się z łacińskich słów trans (oznaczającego inny) oraz figrua (co oznacza kształt). Łatwo więc dojść do wniosku, że transfiguracja oznacza po prostu zmianę kształtu – znakomicie oddaje to przyjęte przez kościół polskie słowo przemienienie. W wielu językach do dziś święto Przemienienia Pańskiego nazywa się właśnie transfiguracją – między innymi w języku angielskim, hiszpańskim, francuskim czy włoskim. Polski Kościół zdecydował kilkaset lat temu o używaniu słowa przemienienie, ale w języku teologów transfiguracja wciąż funkcjonuje. To właśnie to wydarzenie – Transfigurację, a więc Przemienienie Pana Jezusa – opisują Ewangelie odczytywane szóstego sierpnia.

Po co dokonało się Przemienienie? Na to pytanie dokładnie odpowiada Katechizm Kościoła Katolickiego, w punkcie 568: Przemienienie Chrystusa ma na celu umocnienie wiary Apostołów ze względu na przyszłą mękę, wyjście na "wysoką górę" jest przygotowaniem do wejścia na Kalwarię. Chrystus, Głowa Kościoła, ukazuje to, co zawiera Jego Ciało i czym promieniuje w sakramentach: "nadzieję chwały" (Kol 1, 27). Przemienienie było więc przygotowaniem uczniów na bolesną godzinę Męki, by nie ulegli zgorszeniu krzyża, by mieli pewność wywiedzioną także z nadprzyrodzonych źródeł.

Gdzie doszło do Przemienienia? Ewangelie mówią o wysokiej górze na której wydarzenie to miało miejsce, żadna z relacji Apostołów nie wskazuje jednak jej nazwy. Tradycja chrześcijańska mówi jednak o górze Tabor.

Dlaczego Panu Jezusowi towarzyszy Mojżesz i Eliasz? Pojawiające się u boku Chrystusa postacie ze Starego Testamentu reprezentują dwa główne składniki Starego Przymierza – Mojżesz symbolizuje Prawo, a Eliasz uważany był za największego z Proroków. Prawo i Proroctwa znane Żydom miały się zbiec w osobie Jezusa Chrystusa wraz z Jego śmiercią i zmartwychwstaniem.

Przemienienie opisują Ewangeliści Łukasz, Mateusz i Marek, tymczasem na górze z Chrystusem byli inni uczniowie. Czy zachowały się ich wypowiedzi na ten temat? W swym drugim liście święty Piotr dokładnie potwierdza to, co wcześniej zapewne opowiedział pozostałym apostołom: Nie za wymyślonymi bowiem mitami postępowaliśmy wtedy, gdy daliśmy wam poznać moc i przyjście Pana naszego, Jezusa Chrystusa, ale jako naoczni świadkowie Jego wielkości. Otrzymał bowiem od Boga Ojca cześć i chwałę, gdy taki oto głos Go doszedł od wspaniałego Majestatu: To jest mój Syn umiłowany, w którym sobie upodobałem. I słyszeliśmy, jak ten głos doszedł z nieba, kiedy z Nim razem byliśmy na górze świętej (2P, 1, 16-18).

When wri ng last Sunday’s column about Christ’s parable discourse in Ma hew, I asked you to fast forward to the last Sunday in November to consider the Judgement of the Na ons passage that we’ll read to celebrate the Solemnity of our Lord Jesus Christ, King of the Universe on 11/26. It’s funny. I’ve been wri ng this column for a long me, and I don’t recall ever asking readers to make such temporal leap. But now, just a week later, I find myself asking you to take a giant step backwards to 3/12, the Second Sunday of Lent. I ask this because that’s when we read Ma hew’s account of the Transfigura on, and today we read again it to celebrate the actual Feast Day commemora ng the event. This same-reading thing seemed odd to me un l I came upon an interes ng fact while researching the column: this is the first me in eleven years that the feast falls on a Sunday, hence the back-to-back (sort of) readings. Per Ma hew, “Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them; his face shown like the sun and his clothes became white as light,” and as I explained back then, we know the story. And since we o en think of Lent as a journey and of how we strive to arrive at the empty tomb changed, I focused months ago on Ma hew’s narra ve text near the end of the reading (a er the three disciples see the transfigured Christ speaking with Moses and Elijah, and a er they hear a voice coming from the cloud, and a er they fall to the ground afraid, and a er

Jesus reassures them) because that’s when the evangelist tells us the disciples raised their eyes and “they saw no one else but Jesus alone.” “What be er way for all of us to change, ” I concluded, than to look beyond life’s distrac ons and see no one else but Jesus alone. Today, though, a different line impacts me. Today, it’s that voice from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him.” Actually, it’s that, and the first line from today’s Le er of Saint Peter (“…We did not follow cleverly devised myths when we made known to you the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ, but we had been eyewitnesses of his majesty”) and the sign some atheist group posted in my hometown’s park several Easters ago (“Nobody died for our sins; Jesus Christ is a myth”). So…it boils down to this: is Jesus the Son of God? Look, I don’t know about a lot of things. But I believe in my deepest heart that Jesus is the Christ, and I believe his Transfigura on gives us a peek at life beyond the grave: brilliant, glorious, radiant light. The kind of light, perhaps, that the people with near death/post death experiences always talk about. Faith is a journey. A temporal leap of sorts. Well, that voice in the cloud saying “This is my Son…listen to him” comes to us every day in a sense, and every day it’s on us to listen, believe, respond. That we all might be transfigured a bit, all along the way.

BAPTISM:

For Children: a pre-Baptism class is required for Baptism of the first child. Classes are held in English on the first Wednesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church, and in Polish on the last Tuesday of each month at 7:30PM in the Church. The sacrament of Baptism is celebrated in Polish on the first Saturday of the month at 6:00PM and on the third Sunday of the month at the 3:00PM Mass.
