Article on the mini-skirt:

"Girls' skirts started creeping upward in 1964. The higher hemline was then most conspicuous only because it rode when she sat down.

“Simultaneously, however coincidentally, crime against women began a dramatic increase. FBI crime files show the rate of forcible rape -- which had been declining for five years -- shot upward in 1964 and each year since.

“In England, where the short skirts had a head start, the rape rate those five recent years increased 90 per cent.

“In the United States, the increase has been 68 per cent. Last year forcible rapes increased more than any other violent crime.

“Is there a correlation? The consensus of law enforcement officers in 50 states is `yes.'

“...Mary Quant, London designer, mother of the miniskirt, said on November 13, 1967, `Miniclothes are symbolic of those girls who want to seduce a man..." (my emph, sw)

“And, as if to confirm her conclusion, the years the skirts went up crimes against women demonstrated parallel increase..." (Paul Harvey, April. 1970, via Truth Magazine, vol. 14, p. 592)

Effects of dress on marital fidelity:

“While Markman insists this finding is just a coinci- dence, his research does raise a rather intriguing question: What geographic differences do exist in divorce rates?

“Perhaps the easiest way to answer this question is to think not of baseball, but of another warm weather accompaniment - bathing suits. Strangely enough, the divorce rate of any place in the continental United States can be reliably predicted by knowing the number of days out of the year that women there can wear swimsuits. Generally, the more warm weather days suitable for bathing attire, the higher

Effects of dress on marital fidelity:

the divorce rate; the more cold weather days unsuitable for swimwear, the lower the divorce rate.

“To illustrate, draw a line across the midsection of the continental United States (along the northern borders of North Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico, and Arizona, and continuing through southern Nevada and central California). More than 60 percent of the total U.S. population lives above what might be called ‘the tan line.’ Yet less than half of all divorces occur here, and all 10 states with the lowest divorce rates are above the tan line.” (WILLIAM R.
