FROM THE PASTOR

JANUARY 2018

Dear church friends,What does it mean to be a disciple of Christ? After Christ’s resurrection, Jesus’ final command to his followers is recorded in Matthew 28:18-20. We are to go make disciples...teaching the world to obey everything Christ commanded. This is a command not just for pastors or paid staff, but for all people who say they are Christian. What would you say if you were asked to explain what it means to be a follower of Christ?

A story is told of a teenager riding on a train with his shoe untied. A passenger on the train, in a kind gesture, pointed it out to the teenager, and the teenager nodded, but did nothing. After a few minutes passed, the passenger said again, “Your shoe is untied; I would not want you to trip.” The teenager said thank you, but did nothing in response. As they both got ready to depart at their stop, the passenger noticed that the teenager’s shoe was still untied. As the teenager stepped from the train, he stepped on his shoelace and fell flat on his face. The passenger quickly helped him up and asked, “Why didn’t you tie your shoe?” To which the teenager replied, “No one ever taught me how.”

Our goal for 2018, is to do everything we can as a church to provide opportunities for you as a Christian to grow and mature in your faith. We will kick off the New Year with a Sunday message series focusing on teaching you what it means to be a disciple of Christ.

What an exciting way to renew our faith and start the new year!

Pastor Dennis

WELLNESS NEWS

MOORESVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

HEALTHIER CHOICESAs we start a new year, many will be making the commitment to make healthier choices in 2018! A few suggestions – start by making ONE change each week. Make up a calendar of changes to help keep yourself on track. Then find a friend to encourage and challenge you to meet your goals. Don’t beat yourself up if you need longer than a week to make the change. Drop it and come back to it. I am thrilled to share some positive changes that make a difference:

Cancer: 42% of cancer cases are down due to risk factors you can change. A large new study from the American Cancer Society inventories the risk factors for various types of cancer. Those findings shed much-needed light on the proportion of cancers that could be prevented by making the necessary lifestyle changes. Smoking is the top risk factor for all cancer cases, according to new research. The new research examined a total of 1,570,975 cancer cases, 587,521 of which resulted in death. During the analysis, 26 cancer types and 17 risk factors were analyzed. The following risk factors are called “modifiable” because people can take active measures to change them. In the new study, such factors included:

- alcohol intake- smoking (both first- and second-hand)- excess body weight - a low content of fiber in one’s diet- the consumption of processed red meat- a low intake of fruit and vegetables- ultraviolet (UV) radiation- low calcium - a lack of physical activity

The study authors remind the public of the four key factors that everyone can keep in check: body weight, alcohol consumption, diet, and physical activity. The time is NOW!!! Make some healthy changes!!!!!!!

LEG CRAMPS AND SOAPIt’s worth a try! Many people claim that soap under your bottom sheet can prevent leg cramps and even restless legs. It doesn’t work for everyone, but there is some science that supports the use of soap. A skin patch with soap-scented oil eased the pain of fibromyalgia and of menstrual cramps (Ough, Journal of Multidisciplinary Healthcare, Sep. 1, 2008; Ough et al, Journal of Alternative and Complementary Medicine, July 2008).

One possible explanation for the soap effect is the fragrance. A chemist suggested to us that the most popular soaps all seem to have the fragrant compound limonene in their scent.

PRAYER AND STEPHEN MINISTRY

JANUARY 2018

While We Waitby CATHY MOSIER

Blessed is he that waits. Daniel 12:12 may seem an easy thing to do, BUT it is one of the postures of a Christian soldier that is learned over many years of teaching. Marching and doing are much easier to Our Father’s warriors than standing still. There are hours of confusion when the most willing spirit anxiously desires to serve our LORD, BUT we don’t know what we should do while we wait (Sounds a bit like Paul in Romans doesn’t it) Grumble in despair? Retreat in confusion? Charge ahead in presumption? Detour in fear? NO, SIMPLY WAIT! Wait in PRAYER. Call upon GOD and spread your case before HIM. Explain your confusion at the waiting and call on HIS promises of help (Psalm 46, Isaiah 43:2). Wait in faith! Express to GOD your unshakable confidence in HIS Almighty Power and Might. Believe that if He keeps you waiting…even until the last second…HE will come at the right time…direction will be given…at just the right time. Unfortunately, here’s the most difficult part! Wait in quietness…no complaining…no grousing…no rushing forward. Wait quietly and claim Psalm 16 which ends, “You make known to me the path of life; you will fill me with joy in your presence, with eternal pleasures at your right hand.”As you begin the New Year remember your Tuesday Morning Chapel Prayer team prays specifically for those private requests received on Sunday morning as well as those listed on the bulletin. Your Email Prayer Team also prays daily for the needs of your church family they receive over the internet. They also pray for those special needs that happen on days other than Sunday morning. And your Prayer Card Ministers are sending out prayer cards so that our Father’s hurting children may receive a special touch from Jesus each week. Cards of love, prayers and encouragement are lovingly sent by this faithful group.Lots of praying is going on around FUMC! Rest assured your needs and concerns are lifted before our Father’s throne in prayer. YOU can join us too! Check out the back of the bulletin and pray for the person whose name is highlighted…ask GOD to bless them. Ask Jesus Christ to bring them healing. Ask Holy Spirit to breath His comforting breath of peace into their lives. My prayer is that you grow closer to Him each and every day!In Christ’s service, Cathy Mosier, Prayer Team

STEPHEN MINISTRY TEAMActs 16:25, Paul and Silas were very tired and they felt terrible pain. In their situation, most people would be angry and miserable, but Paul and Silas prayed and they praised God. They were very happy. This was not because of their circumstances. But it was because they knew Jesus. People who know Jesus are very happy. They are happy even when bad things happen to them. The other prisoners listened. They were surprised when Paul and Silas praised God aloud. The other prisoners knew that these men were different. God was the reason that Paul and Silas were happy. We must always praise God in difficult circumstances. In that way, we show something to people. We show to them that we are happy. We know that God is looking after us. That is why we are happy.

Like Paul and Silas are you trapped in a prison? Are you suffering in terrible pain? Are you angry? Miserable? Paul and Silas provided support for each other and turned to GOD to find strength to endure their situation. Your Stephen Ministry Team is ready to give YOU confidential Christ-like assistance as you walk through this dark valley of pain. Those within this team are also using their Stephen Ministry skills on a daily basis as they lovingly interact with those around them, providing care and support in a loving Christ-like confidential manner.

In Christ’s service, Cathy Mosier, Prayer Team

MISSIONS and MINISTRIES

MOORESVILLE FIRST UNITED METHODIST CHURCH

United Methodist Womenby Cheryll Howell

A big ole THANK YOU to Rebecca Vernon for another fantastic Cantata last month. Your talent in gathering the ensemble, singers, bell choir and choir for our enjoyment is an asset to our church and inspiration for all who attended. Thank you!!

United Methodist Women will be making cheese balls for the Super Bowl again this year. Tasting, ordering and paying will be between services on Jan. 21 and 28. Pick up will be Feb. 4 between services. I can hardly wait – they are really good.

Several years ago I came upon a paper my mother had tucked in her Bible. I found it again a while back and thought it would be good for the start of a new year.

NINE REASONS GIVEN BY THEODORE ROOSEVELT FOR GOING TO CHURCH

I. In this actual world, a churchless community, a community where men have abandoned and scoffed at or ignored their religious needs, is a community on the rapid down grade.

II. Church work and church attendance mean the cultivation of the habit of feeling some responsibility for others.

III. There are enough holidays for most of us. Sundays differ from other holidays in the fact that there are fifty-two of them every year – therefore on Sundays go to church.

IV. Yes, I know all the excuses, I know that one can worship the Creator in a grove of trees, or by a running brook, or in a man’s own house just as well as in church. But I also know as matter of cold fact the average man does not thus worship.

V. He may not hear a good sermon at church. He will hear a sermon by a good man who, with his good wife, is engaged all the week in making hard lives a little easier.

VI. He will listen to and take part in reading some beautiful passages from the Bible. And if he is not familiar with the Bible, he has suffered a loss.

VII. He will take part in singing some good hymns.

VIII. He will meet and nod or speak to good, quiet neighbors. He will come away feeling a little more charitably toward all the world, even toward those excessively foolish young men who regard church-going as a soft performance.

IX. I advocate a man’s joining in church work for the sake of showing his faith by his work.

I think Teddy had some good reasons there. Whatever your reason, know that it is right with God to attend.

United Methodist Women wish each and every one of you a HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Around the Boardby Bill Yeager

Last night was the night. My last Churches in Mission board meeting, I have aged out! I do want to first of all ask you to keep Fred and Alice Cordes in your prayers. Alice has been on our prayer list for a while and continued prayer support, I know, would be appreciated. Fred is having medical problems and Alice is trying to juggle family and Churches in Mission.

The Christmas assistance is moving along well at both locations. CIM has had and continues to get tremendous support to make this Christmas better for many families. The purchase of the Martinsville building is making a difference in our presence and operations.

Our board consultant, Ellen Annala, had a four-page document for the board. Ellen will be working with the CIM board for about a year. This document was input from Ellen’s interviews with pastors, board members, and staff. Of all the information, I want to note one in particular. A big thanks to all the volunteers is needed. No other organization accomplishes so much with volunteers, and volunteers that are incredibly committed are hard to pass up.

A few quotes I think say it all. “We believe in CIM. It can be better, but it is worth our support,” and “I don’t know of another county-wide nonprofit with as much history.”

What do I see in the future for CIM? CHANGE. Is it needed, who will do it, how long will it take, will it improve CIM, name it. I can’t answer those questions. I am certain, as with most fine organizations, it is needed to continue to serve. The question is how much change.

Were you attending FUMC when Rev. Jim Hollis was working with our church? Jim said something to the effect, “It is easy to take a bad church and make it a good church, but it is very hard to take a good church and make it better.” I think the same is true of CIM. A good CIM will not be an easy task to make better. What is too much or too little change? That is up to the churches involved and their board members.

For now I will simply say it has been fun, you have to have fun in what you do, and I did. Should you know Ron Birchler from the Catholic Church, ask him about the green bean glut.

I’m looking forward to what Kevin and Patti have to say and keep the seats warm.

I’m Bill Yeager, and I’m in the cold seat.

planning, please call Lydia Rychtarczyk at 317-834-1787 or email her at [email protected]. We need to choose a theme and curriculum. VBS will be held June 19-22. Registration for volunteers will begin in April. Registration for children will begin in May. This is an awesome event for all.

Family Ministries would like to thank everyone who helped and participated in Breakfast with Santa. Santa, Mrs. Claus and Elsa (was that the reindeer’s name?) did a great job entertaining both

kids and adults. Our kitchen crew was awesome in preparing a yummy breakfast. Family Ministries raised over $1,000 that will be donated to Churches in Mission. It was a great Saturday morning to be at First United Methodist Church. We appreciate how our Church supports this ministry.

Thank You from Family Ministries
