How quick is your reaction time?

•apencil

•aruler

1 Work with a friend and measure your reaction time.

Step 1 Your friend holds a ruler vertically, as in the picture.

Step 2 You hold your thumb and finger close to the 0 cm mark, but don’t touch the ruler. Your friend will drop the ruler without telling you when. You have got to catch it with your fingers!

Step 3 Look and see what centimetre mark your fingers are on when you catch the ruler. Write the results in the chart. Repeat the experiment four times.

Step 4 Hold the ruler and your friend has got to catch it.

Step 5 Compare your best time with your partner’s best time. Who has got the quickest reaction time?

2 Number the actions in order from 1–3.

The brain sends a signal to the muscles in your hand.

Your eyes see the ruler moving and send a signal to the brain.

The muscles in your hand contract and pull your fingers closed.
