What Do They Do?
Hi, my name is Michelle Cottier, the new manager of the Reception Centre, formerly know as the Front Office. Yes, there has been a name change, though I’m sure many of you will still think of it as the Front Office. I'll try to give you a peek into some of our daily routines.
Light switches flicked on, cabinets are unlocked, files are arranged, cash is counted, and new information is reviewed. Now we are ready to take on the day.
Files and keys are distributed, photocopy requests are filled, telephones are answered and lost members are pointed in the right direction. Whether purchases from the Showcase, information and guided tours of what the Centre offers, ticket sales for our many social activities, or tickets for the Let’s-Do-It bus trips, and a multitude of miscellaneous inquiries and duties, it all comes through the Reception Centre. But this is just some of the business side of the Reception Centre .......... there is so much more to us.
That friendly voice greeting you as you enter ...... that person who works diligently to be helpful ........... that person who enjoys seeing your finished projects .... that person who's there when you need help .....yes that's us.
I'm proud of my team of volunteers and I'm thankful for their hard work and commitment.
Are we perfect............ no ...... but we're working on it and we have fun while we are doing it.
We wish you and yours a wonderful holiday season and all the best in the New Year!
Michelle Cottier

Chinese Brush Painting In November, we just finished doing the gluing of our pictures. These pictures will need to have frames, etc. and be ready for the Christmas session. We will be doing paintings of the poinsettia and landscapes the rest of November. On the 23rd of January, the Chinese Brush Painting class will be putting up pictures that they have for the Chinese New Year. This is the year of the Rooster and we will have a few Roosters painted for sure. The January class will be starting on the 9th of January. We wish you all a Happy Christmas and a wonderful New Year! Barbara Elford
Art in the Hallway December
A small collection of drawings is now hanging in the hallway from the Thursday afternoon drawing class please take some time and come into the new hall way to see the work done in this class. Lesley Brennand January work displayed
Work in the lounges and hallways will be from both Thursday drawing classes. We hope you enjoy them. Lesley Brennand & Anita Bjola
Sculpture Class
Sculpture class is on FRIDAY 12:30 to 3:00 pm. We still have room for more people. We will start on the first Friday after the Centre opens in January.
Basic Drawing with Donna O'Grady, Tuesday 1-3
Classes break December 3rd and resume January 10th. This class gives instruction and practice in basic drawing skills using pencils and charcoal. The goal is to develop a loose comfortable relationship with drawing medium, to train the eye to see shape, tone and texture and to develop a balanced composition. All skill levels are welcome.
Quilting News Quilting with Marilyn
Juan de Fuca 55+ Activity Centre December 2016 & January 2017 Page 5
Well December is here again, feels like it was just January. Oh wait, it’s right around the corner again! Good grief.
The Craft Sale in November was a great success. The Quilting table brought in approximately $2000, all of which goes to the Centre. Many thanks to all that made projects for the sale, those that volunteered for set-up and break-down, sales and just keeping us organized. Thanks also to all the volunteers that it takes to put on a show like this. Great job by all.
Our classes will be coming to an end December 14 and 15, 2016 for a well deserved Christmas break. Our classes will start again on January 18 and 19, 2017.
We have been working on an appliqué piece, a Canadian Mystery Quilt that depicts every part of Canada, which promises to be an absolute work of art. We hope to have it all finished in the new year.
We will be doing some small projects and finishing up others, as normal, but will throw in a retreat or bus trip as well. Maybe even attendance at a Quilt Show.
Please join the Kreative Krafts, Ceramics, Beads and Cards, Wood Workers and the Quilters in the last opportunity to purchase those last minute Christmas gifts when we are in the front hall on December 15 and 16.
Marilyn Fuller

Evening Weaving Class
Have you always wanted to learn to weave, but can’t attend daytime classes? Try learning to weave at our evening class held once a week on Mondays from 6:30 - 9:00 pm.
Learn to weave on a four-shaft loom. Learn to read patterns. Create your own fabric to sew into anything you like. Or perhaps a finished project such as place mats or a scarf appeals to you. A four-shaft loom makes a great first loom. One could spend a lifetime weaving on it and still not exhaust all possibilities.
You do not need your own loom to try this great craft. There are looms available for rent, three months at a time, at a cost of $10.00 a month. A very affordable way to see if weaving is for you. If you develop a passion for weaving, we will look for a second-hand loom for you. The cost is approximately $100.
