MAHATMA GHANDI, speaking on thecharacter of Muhammad (pbuh) says in'YOUNG INDIA': "I wanted to know the best ofone who holds today undisputed sway overthe hearts of millions of mankind ... I becamemore than convinced that it was not thesword that won a place for Islam in thosedays in the scheme of life. It was the rigidsimplicity, the utter self-effacement of theProphet, the scrupulous regard for his

pledges, his intense devotion to his friendsand followers, his intrepidity, hisfearlessness, his absolute trust in God and inhis own mission. These and not the swordcarried everything before them andsurmounted every obstacle. When I closedthe 2nd volume (of the prophet's biography),I was sorry there was not more for me to readof the great life. "

LAMARTINE, the renowned historianspeaking on the essentials of humangreatness wonders: "If greatness of purpose,

smallness of means and astounding resultsare the three criteria of human genius, whocould dare to compare any great man inmodern history with Muhammad? The mostfamous men created arms, laws and empiresonly. They founded, if anything at all, nomore than material powers which oftencrumbled away before their eyes. This manmoved not only armies, legislation, empires, peoples and dynasties, but millions of men inone-third of the then inhabited world,- andmore than that, he moved the altars, thegods, the religions, the ideas, the beliefs andsouls ... his forbearance in victory, hisambition, which was entirely devoted to oneidea and in no manner striving for an empire;his endless prayers, his mystic conversationswith God, his death and his triumph afterdeath,- all these attest not to an imposturehut to a firm conviction which gave him thepower to restore dogma. This dogma was two-fold,the unity of God and the immateriality of God,- theformer telling what God is, the latter telling whatGod is not,- the one overthrowing false gods withthe sword, the other starting an idea with thewords.Philosopher, orator, apostle, legislator, warrior, conqueror of ideas, restorer of rational dogmas, ofa cult without images, the founder of twentyterrestrial empires and of one spiritual empire, that

is MUHAMMAD. As regards all the standards bywhich Human Greatness may he measured, wemay well ask, IS THERE ANY MAN GREATER THANHE?(Lamartine, Historire de la Turquie, Paris, 1854,Vol. 11, pp. 276-277)

In the words of Prof. Hurgronje: "theleague of nations founded by the prophet ofIslam put the principle of international unityand human brotherhood on such universalfoundations as to show candle to the othernations ". He continues: "the fact is that nonation of the world can show a parallel to

what Islam has done towards the realizationof the idea of the league of nations ".

Michael H. Hart in his recently publishedbook on ratings of men who contributedtowards the benefit and upliftment ofmankind writes: "My choice of Muhammad tolead the list of the world's most influentialpersons may surprise some readers and mayhe questioned by others, but he was the onlyman in history who was supremelysuccessful on both the religious and secularlevels".

(M.H. Hart, "The 100: A Ranking of the MostInfluential Persons in History", New York,1978, pp. 33).

Edward Gibbon and Simon Ockley speaking onthe profession of ISLAM write: " 'I BELIEVE IN ONEGOD, AND MAHOMET, AN APOSTLE OF GOD' is thesimple and invariable profession of Islam. Theintellectual image of Deity has never beendegraded by any visible idol,- the honor of theProphet have never transgressed the measure ofhuman virtues,- and his living precepts haverestrained the gratitude of his disciples within thebounds of reason and religion" .(History of the Saracen Empires,London,1870,p.54)

K.S Ramakrishna Rao, an Indian Professor ofPhilosophy in his booklet, Muhammad, TheProphet of Islam, calls him the "PERFECT MODELFOR HUMAN LIFE". Prof. Ramakrishna Rao explainshis point by saying, "The personality ofMuhammad, it is most difficult to get into thewhole truth of it. Only a glimpse of it I can catch. What a dramatic succession of picturesquescenes? There is Muhammad, the Warrior,-Muhammad, the Businessman; Muhammad, theStatesman; Muhammad, the Orator; Muhammad, the Reformer; Muhammad, the Refuge of Orphans;Muhammad, the Protector of Slaves; Muhammad, the Emancipator of Women; Muhammad, the Judge; Muhammad, the Saint. All in theremagnificent roles, in all these departments ofhuman activities, he is alike a hero. "Fromhttp://www.geocities.com/exposelies/viewsofprophet.htm

God in Islam, the famous poetess of India,Sarojini Naidu says; "It was the first religionthat preached and practiced democracy; for,in the mosque, when the call for prayer issounded and worshippers are gatheredtogether, the democracy of Islam isembodied five times a day when the peasantand king kneel side by side and proclaim: ""God Alone is Great"...
