What College Should Be
an introduction
4
1,648 bright, hardworking men and women from many backgrounds, our students know what they want. It’s why they’re here.
5
We think college should be fun and exciting, a place and a time to explore new ideas and try new things—to find what you want to do with your life and to figure out who you are.
Lebanon Valley College is for students who want:
A broad education . . . . . . . . . . 2A strong major . . . . . . . . . . . . . 4Friendships that last . . . . . . . . 6Life-changing experiences . . . 8A full life . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 A second home . . . . . . . . . . . . 13

“ I began college as a biology major and then switched to philosophy, American studies, and English literature . In a sense, the liberal arts embodies the Renaissance ideal: do as much as you can and do it well .”
MARQUIS BEY
Majors: Philosophy, American Studies, English LiteratureHometown: Philadelphia, Pa.Activities: powerlifting, reading, and writing
INVOLVED PROFESSORS
LVC’s caring, dedicated professors enjoy sharing their knowledge and experience. Because LVC is a close-knit community, professors make a point of really getting to know their students—meeting with them outside of class, attending their performances, or cheering them on from the sidelines at games.
SMALL CLASSES
Learning works best when students are involved. That’s why the average class size at LVC is only 20, and why so many classes are based on discussion—instead of the lecture-style courses that are the norm at larger colleges and universities.
CONSTANT SUPPORT
We support our students in many ways, from free tutoring in any subject to writing help on any paper . Once you’re at LVC, you’re part of our family, and we’ll do all we can to make sure you succeed (and graduate in four years).
College should offer . . .
a broadeducationThis is your time to explore—to try out new roles, challenge yourself, and build a wide foundation of knowledge and experience .
3
LEARN EVERYTHING
A liberal arts education is about exploring many subjects and delving into unfamiliar topics—such as economics, art history, or computer science—that you might not have been able to study in high school. It’s about using different parts of your brain, learning the basics of many fields, and, oftentimes, discovering a new passion.
MusicWhether studying theory and performance or learning the basics of music business, education, or recording technology, LVC students explore a variety of professions within the music industry.
During LVC’s ninth annual VALE music conference (the College’s student-created music business enterprise), the student-run VALE Music Group LLC, released its first record—Scott Eggert: Volume 1. VALE’s other ventures have also been busy of late: VALE Records has signed its first band, Sheridan Avenue; VALE Publishing is creating a music catalog; and VALE booking is just getting started. Innovative and homegrown, VALE helps LVC students cultivate experiences and connections that jump-start their careers.

College should include . . .
a strongmajorFor the first time in your life, you’ll get to really focus on the subjects that interest you the most, becoming an expert and preparing for your career .
5
DIG DEEP
In addition to exploring many subjects, you’ll choose one (or two) to focus on. Some majors relate directly to specific careers—accounting or digital communications, for example—while others build skills and knowledge that will be useful in anything you do.
Physical Therapy
Backed by outstanding facilities and having gained practical experience by working with LVC athletes, students in this six-year program graduate with a doctor of physical therapy degree.
EducationChoosing from among a range of certifications, and with four years of class-room observation and then a semester of student teaching, LVC’s education majors become excellent teachers who get great jobs after graduation.

ALWAYS A DUTCHMAN
Membership in the LVC family doesn’t end at graduation. Students tend to love their LVC experience so much that they keep in touch with the College throughout their lives, helping young graduates however they can—whether through career guidance, referrals, or internships . Through the LVC Global Network, 16,000+ LVC alumni around the world, there’s always a friendly face or helping hand wherever you go and in whatever profession you choose.
BUILT-IN SUPPORT
LVC’s 48 resident assistants are upperclass students who live in the residence halls and help freshmen adjust to college life—making sure they have the guidance and resources they need to succeed .
JUST LIKE HOME
LVC is a friendly and safe residential environment where students live together just a few steps from the center of campus. More than just places to study and sleep, LVC’s residence halls are fun, interesting communities where lasting friendships and memories are made.

“ I went to Perugia, Italy, and studied Italian language, food, and politics . I learned a new culture and made great friends .”
INTERNSHIPS
Through an internship position, you can try out a career that interests you and apply the things you’ve learned in class to a professional setting. Internships look great on a résumé because employers want to hire people with actual work experience. More than 65 percent of LVC students complete a professional internship, student teaching, or field/clinical experience .
Here are a few of the internships our students have held in recent years:
designing window displays for Anthropologie
researching new applications for existing drugs at Penn State University College of Medicine
archiving historical materials for the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission
College should include . . .
life-changingexperiencesYour world is about to get a lot bigger . Soon, you’ll have the chance to live and study in another country, join a professor in the laboratory, or try a career through an internship .
RESEARCH
Because LVC’s professors are also scientists and scholars, they need help collecting data, running their experiments, and researching their books and articles. Assisting professors with research builds valuable skills and experience . At large universities, these opportunities usually go to graduate students. At LVC, they go to you.

LVC offers semester-long and shorter-term programs in 13 countries around the world, giving students of any major the chance to see what it’s like to live and learn in another culture.

College should offer . . .
a full life You’ve heard it before, but we’ll say it
again: hard work is nothing without a bit of play . At LVC, you’ll have plenty of opportunities to spend time with friends doing the things you love best .
STUDENT LIFE
LVC offers more than 90 student-run clubs and organizations . Below is just a sampling:

MCKENNA SNYDER
Majors: English Literature, Sociology Hometown: Elizabethtown, Pa.Activities: resident assistant, Student Government class secretary, volunteer firefighter
When flooding threatened Annville in the fall of 2011, McKenna Snyder and several of her friends got involved with the relief effort through the local fire company—and kept volunteering long after the crisis passed. For McKenna, “The Annville Fire Department truly embodies the spirit of volunteerism . My friends and I love the family we’ve found at Station 5, and couldn’t imagine our LVC experience without them!”

13
WEEKEND GETAWAYS
LVC sponsors regular weekend trips (including free bus fare) to such activities and destinations as paintball, ski trips in the Poconos, Philadelphia Flyers games, Rehoboth Beach, the Lancaster Outlets, and New York City .
NEIGHBORING COMMUNITIES
Annville is surrounded by towns and cities that provide LVC students with even more opportunities for learning and fun . Here are a few:
ANNVILLE
Big enough to provide the resources students need and small enough to be personable and safe, Annville is the quintessential college town . From Soprano’s Pizzeria & Ristorante to MJ’s Coffee House to the historic Allen Theatre, Annville’s favorite student destinations are just a block or two from campus.
Palmyra (8 minutes) bowling, ice rink, sports complex
Hershey (15 minutes)
Hersheypark, GIANT Center, AHL Hockey, outlet mall
Harrisburg (35 minutes)
minor league baseball, state capitol, symphony
York (1 hour)
skiing, state park
Philadelphia (1.5 hours)
pro sports, culture, historic landmarks
Baltimore (2 hours)
pro sports, crab cakes, aquarium
College should be . . .
a secondhomeNot all college experiences happen on campus . You’re also part of a wider community—a place you’ll learn from, give back to, and even call home .
JUST CLOSE ENOUGH
For many LVC students from towns and cities throughout eastern Pennsylvania, Annville is just close enough—without being too close—to home. They can easily get back when they need to (for a home-cooked meal or to catch up on laundry) but still feel like they’ve gone away to college.
