PPRESIDENTRESIDENT’’SS MMESSAGEESSAGEAll through the year, the club has member-ship meetings on first Thursday of the month.Everyone is welcome and encouraged to stopby for some refreshments, and to enjoy thespeaker arranged by our program chairper-son, Rick Goncalves.

The reasons to attend membership meetingsaren’t just the free food and valuable doorprizes. One good reason to attend member-ship meetings is to catch-up on happeningswith Porsche friends. Another is to learnabout an interesting topic that we can use atthe track or on the road. Sometimes the rea-sons overlap, and sometimes they don’t.

One membership meeting Peggy and Iattended as newer members, and we happilymingled and visited with folks for about anhour. Then, we sat through an in-depth tech-nical presentation on springs and shocksreplete with graphs and data tables; springrates, damping, rebound, bump and valving, all were covered. During the Q&A sessionafterwards, Peggy turned to Kathy and whis-pered, “My Gosh, they are asking follow-upquestions about shock absorbers!!!” Theyboth rolled their eyes and headed for the doorto continue their conversation in the lobby. Ithink I was taking notes.

Years later, that shock absorber presentationwould come in handy at the DE at La Junta.Peggy drove the red 89 car into the pits fromher first run session, and reported a chirpingnoise from the tires under heavy braking, some directional instability, and that the frontwas pushing badly through the turns. The carwas just not working right. I rememberedfrom that membership meeting long ago thatshocks should be matched to the spring rates, and since I had reinstalled my lighter stocksprings, I probably needed to soften up theshocks. A quick twist of the adjustment knobon the Koni sport shocks and number 89 washandling much better, and our lap timesdropped several seconds.

I was reminded of another tidbit from amembership meeting on the drive downHighway 71 to La Junta this year. TheColorado Highway Patrol has visited the

Porsche club several times with their engag-ing presentation of highway stories, safetytips, and the many strange drivers they havemet over the years. At the Q&A I rememberasking, “Do you really watch for red cars, and why?” The officer smiled briefly, “Yes,we do, and it is because they are alwaysspeeding.” (Note to Rick, suggested topic fornext meeting: How to adjust your Targa topto be quiet enough at 87 mph so you can hearthe radar detector go off!). Lesson learned;Guards red to some, arrest me red to others!

The two recent membership meetingsfocused on car finishes. They featured anauto detailer and the Maguires wax rep pro-viding tips on keeping our Porsches cleaned

and shined. Try claying your car to removeswirls, how about using high tech syntheticwaxes on clear coats and carnauba on singlestage paint, and wipe up everything withmicrofiber towels. They have products andtechniques designed for every finish and user, right down to the designer scents so the carsmells good.

I remember arriving at the car show on theMt. Rushmore tour and watching Bill andLynn spraying something on their Turbo totake off the road film and really spiff up thefinish. So, I got out my can of Windex and aT-shirt and followed suit. The detail expert atthe membership meeting said I was not onlytaking off the road film with window cleaner, but I was also stripping the wax off the car.It didn’t really matter that much because, according to the experts, when I washed mycar in Ivory dish detergent before leavingDenver on the tour, I also took off a goodlyamount of wax anyway. I should be using aspecial detail product containing, to quote the

label, “a special lubricity formula.” Yes, thisstuff goes on a car! You never know whatyou will learn at a membership meeting.

Looking ahead, Rick has a great social andcar buff evening planned for our next meet-ing Thursday, July 7th. We will be having adinner and visit at the Shelby AmericanCollection Museum in Boulder. [www.shel-byamericancollection.org ] The club will pro-vide the food, beverages and free admission, while the museum provides the venue for usto overlap good conversation and automotivehistory. Learn about the driver and cardesigner Carol Shelby, and see some leg-endary race cars: the GT-40; the AC, 289 and427 Cobras and a Daytona Coupe. Watch thenewsletter and your email for details. If youcan volunteer to help with the meeting letRick know.

The August meeting will be held at theDoubletree in Westminster and feature thevery successful racing team, RuSPORT(www.rusport.com). They are based inLoveland Colorado, and their drivers are AJAllmendinger and Justin Wilson, who bothcompete in the Champ Car Series. They willtalk about their season and racing program. It will be a good chance for some Q&A witha top race team.

For 2006, the club will be moving the mem-bership meeting to a new location.Hopefully a change of scenery and a central-ly located facility will keep the eveningsfresh and accessible to even more members.Susan Bucknam is searching for places. Ifyou have suggestions, let her know [ [email protected] ]. Rick is planning ahead for thelast three membership meetings this fall. Ifyou have a contact for a speaker or a pro-gram suggestion, email Rick Goncalves [[email protected] ].

So, whether you come to talk or listen, orcome to eat or drink, you are most welcometo drop by our next membership meeting.See you on Thursday!

“There is a fifth dimension beyond thatwhich is known to man. It is a dimensionas vast as space and as timeless as infinity. It is the middle ground between light andshadow, between science and superstition, and it lies between the pit of man’s fears, and the summit of his knowledge. This isthe dimension of imagination. It is an areawhich we call ... THE TWILIGHT ZONE.”

Ryan and RebeccaHiatt, average youngAMR members whoattended a member-ship meeting inColorado Springs lastnight and on the wayhome took a detour.

“Most of us on wak-ing in the morning know exactly where weare; the rooster or the alarm clock bringsus out of sleep into the familiar sights, sounds, aromas of home and the comfort ofa routine day ahead.

“Not so with our young friends. This willbe a day like none they’ve ever spent - andthey’ll spend it in the Twighlight Zone.”

Pueblo will never feel the same afterAugust 7th and 8th. You will be changedforever by what you experience at PMI.

The moral of what you’ve just read isclear: if you drive, drive fast. And if yourfriends drive fast, drive faster for you may

find yourself in the won-derous closed loopknown as PuebloMotorsports park(A.K.A. the twilightZone).

“You’re travelingthrough another dimen-sion, a dimension not

only of sight and sound but of mind; ajourney into a wondrous land whoseboundaries are that of the imagination.Next stop: THE TWILIGHT ZONE.”

Take 500 pounds of ice with 20 cases ofwater and 20 cases of beer. Stir in 90pounds of barbeque and 176 pictures fromthe old days and you have a perfect recipefor a drivers ed event in La Junta.

The weekend of May 21 was the 30thanniversary of Alpine Mountain Region. The first weekend was set up as a Zone 9Mini Parade so all the Z-9 ers could prac-tice for the up coming national Parade. Thecharter was presented by Hank Malter, national treasurer of PCA. Our anniver-sary weekend was set up as a celebrationof where we started and where we’vecome.

The Saturday driver’s meeting started offwith as many first timers as grey beardslistening to a quick run through of how wemake the eventssafe and fun andof course the per-petual plea forcorner workers. As we waited todeploy the ambu-lance along withthe first wave ofcorner workers,we were treatedto a flyover by a ’39 BeechcraftStaggerwing owned by Chris Barton. Carowners were later encouraged to photo-graph their cars beside the antique plane

(air cooled, don’t ya know). Chris and histwo boys enjoyed watching the event andeven tooksome ofus up forrides inreturn fora ride inKeithHulley’s911.

The heatonSaturday(107 at one reading) did not deter anyone’s

fun. It was ironic that Where itall Began became the firstChallenge series DE of the sea-son because 3 weeks before, theCDR event was snowed out.Everyone pitched in to help, from sharing shade to helpingpush cars that wouldn’t start. The most striking volunteer wasFred Veitch, who manned thegate in the middle of the firstafternoon. He claimed it was a

promotion for being the first president ofAMR. There were 57 drivers in 4 rungroups.

Wewereluckyenoughto havesomenotableguestsattend.Theowners

of the Colorado Springs and DenverPorsche Stores, Duane Mentzer and BobHagestad brought their wives and helpedtell some of the old stories. Chick Misura,

president of RMR in 1975, and GregVolan, club ubervolunteer and most cogent

historian oftimes past, also joined us.Saturday nightthey sharedmemories andslides with 90of us thatgathered at theHog’s BreathSaloon forbarbeque. Wehad laughter,

liquid libations and much lingering overtreasured memories. Everyone enjoyed thesharing of 30 years of camaraderie anddevotion to our unique cars.

Sunday dawned a lot cooler with anotherflyover to start the day. We had a great setof run groups with several drivers com-menting the cooler air helped their horse-power. Time trials ended the weekend with30 drivers giving their best effort to winTTD. Congratulations to Top timers AlecAcevedo and Peggy Englert.

While great volunteers always staff theevents, we had lots of extra help with find-ing photos from days past. Thanks toErnie Kemper, Greg Volan, Bruce Larsenand Bill Jackson for providing them. Thanks, too, to Scott Longberry for assem-bling the slide show, especially the snappybeginning. Again, a special thanks to ChrisBarton for providing the “air power” thathelped make the event special. A tip of thehat to Dave Rousseau, for making sure wedidn’t run out of ice.

Editor………As the racing season comes intofull bloom, we find RMR club racers crisscross-ing the country in search of the next challenge.Jess Wurmbrand reports from Las Vegas wherethe group gets to try their collective skills on anew and different road course…………….

The Las Vegas Club Race put on by Utah’sIntermountain Region has always been one ofmy favorites to attend. It takes place on a “real”racetrack. It draws many racers from Colorado.Above all, it’s Vegas Baby!

This year’s race was turning out to be different.

It was announced that the race would not beheld on the super speedway. Instead we wouldbe racing on the road course outside the bigtrack. Several of the usual racers bowed out ofthis year’s race with an eye towards WatkinsGlen. Oh well, in my mind it’s still VegasBaby!

The outfield road course at Las Vegas wasrecently lengthened and reconfigured. It is nowa 2.4 mile circuit with close to twenty turns. The beauty of this year’s race was that it wouldbe the first time any of us had run it. We werein for a true test of man/woman and machineon an even playing field with no home courtadvantage.

I accepted Debbie and Bob Polich’s offer tohead out a day early for Friday’s driver educa-tion. We loaded my car next to Bob’s steed intheir cavernous trailer and made the easy pullout to Mesquite. Upon arrival at the track, wefound the Utah bunch doing their usual perfect

job of registration (although there did seem tobe an overabundance of arm bands-I was wear-ing five by the end of the weekend.)

Leaving the pits for the first of four sessionsFriday, we were faced with a challenging, com-pletely unfamiliar, but very safe track. I spentmy first time out just trying to get situated andbegin to anticipate what lay ahead. Judging bythe very divergent lines I saw, there was littleconsensus among drivers as to the correct wayto navigate our way around. Repeating thisprocess in my next session, I began to feel pret-ty good. Not only was I having a great time, Iwas actually starting to gain confidence, bring-ing my lap times down too.

Returning to the paddock, I encountered DaveBanazek engaged in an animated conversationwith a stranger. Exiting my car and catchingbits of what they were saying, I realized that theguy he was talking to seemed to know his stuff.Turns out, in classic Dave style, he had found aDerek Daly instructor with eight years experi-ence on this very track. We were able to extractmany important yet subtle details from him thatsped up our learning curve.

Saturday we were back at the track for practice, qualifying, and the ever-popular practicestarts/fun race. Practice went well for theColorado contingency with everyone seeingdecreasing lap times. Times from the thirdpractice session were to be used to determineone’s grid position for qualifying. I was pleasedto see that my lap times were the best I hadmanaged so far in the weekend. I was not con-cerned when the scrutineer sent me to the scalesafterwards, either. I had one hundred pounds

bolted in, my spare tire was in place, and I stillhad half a tank of fuel. Rolling onto the scales, the tech guys called out 2520, not even close tothe required 2552 pounds required for my car.Oh well, I’d be qualifying from the back.

Apparently, racers from Colorado qualify well!Taking honors for fastest times in our classeswere: Dale Tuety, David Speights, RobertAmes, myself, Carl Feghali, Bill Sant, MichaelHemingway, Chris Cervelli, and Andy Wilzoch. We had swept every class in which we compet-ed. This on a track none of us had competed onbefore.

It was a very long day at the track, three ses-sions of practice, a fun race, and qualifying.Despite the fact that we were in Las Vegas, andvery uncharacteristically for many of us, fewwere in the mood for our usual antics. After anice dinner at the hotel we all retired for theevening.

Sunday brought the promise of two anticipatedsprint races. With great grid positions weentered the now familiar track. A very cleanfirst race brought only a few surprises. In theBlue Group, Rick Goncalves, the cagey veterangot around rookie Dave Speights to take secondin G. In the Red Group Chris Cervelli in hisGTC3 Cup Car managed to pass Andy Wilzochfor a first overall, beating the faster GTA carspresent.

For our second races there was a surpriseannouncement. We would be starting in reverseorder with the fastest cars at the back of thefield. I had never done an inverted grid startand I will admit to nervousness on the grid. I

19July 2005 l RMR Porsche

had this vision in my head of sharks followingbaby seals (with no offense intended towardsthe seals, I mean the I and G class drivers whowere now up front.) The start was quite inter-esting, those of us at the back found ourselveswith nowhere to go when the green flag flew.Accelerating briefly, I found myself stuck inmore traffic than I have ever encountered at arace start. While I was unaware of it at thetime, I later learned that Dale Tuety (who hadalso confided nervousness about this start con-figuration) was having the time of his life lead-ing the first three laps of the race in his I car!The next several laps were a passing festival forthose of us at the back. Within a few lapsthings started to settle down and it felt like atypical race. Given the chance again, I willalways be enthusiastic about inverted starts. Itreally added a new and fun dimension to therace.

All in all, I think everyone had a great time inLas Vegas. We saw old friends, made newones, probably even rubbed a few folks thewrong way. All of us but one came back withour cars and licenses in the same condition wehad left in. Many thanks to everyone fromUtah who put on this perfectly run event and tothe National Stewards who gave up their week-end to join us.

-Jesse Wurmbrand

Editor….While all those seasoned racers werein Vegas, one of our recently-relocated trackjunkies, John Bicknell, was gearing up for hisvery first Club Race at Motorsport Ranch inTexas. Here’s his take on the organized chaosdown south…………….

My First Race

After a lifetime of being a fan and three yearsof actively developing my 911 and my drivingskills I was actually in my first race. The venuewas the PCA Maverick Region TexasMotorsport Ranch race, Memorial Day week-end. Texas Motorsport Ranch is a private“country club” for track junkies.

The track is a 1.7, eleven turn track with someinteresting elevation changes. It’s a wide, safe

track with smooth, long runoffs paved with abeautifully smooth asphalt surface. Therein laythe problem.

During the track chalk-talk by a local veteranracer, the dark-side of Motorsport Ranch wasexplained to all of us rookies and first-time-there veterans. Since Fort Worth’s typicalweather is hot and dry, the track was paved witha combination of asphalt and “poly-something”to give it elasticity for better grip when theweather is hotter than hell. The bad news isthat when the track is wet it’s as slippery as eelsnot.

Other veterans told me about sudden spins“while trying to drive as slowly as possible”.One described a track walk in the rain wherethe track was too slick for the racers to walk upthe hill out of turn five. The other encouragingnews was that the smooth runoff becomes aquick launch off into mud and wet grass.

And guess what? It’s fixin’ to rain on my rook-ie race event –a forty minute sprint race. Iguess you could say I was approaching my firstrace start with dampened spirits.

To orient everyone to my driving style, let’s justdescribe it as “not fast”. And this was only mysecond weekend at Motorsport Ranch, so mytrack knowledge was not exactly intimate. Mycar is a 1984 911 (euro) Stock E class car. If Ireally knew how to drive it, I should have quali-fied somewhere near the front of my run group(classes E through J). But I qualified 24th outof 32, in the middle of a bunch of mostly expe-rienced, sly, evil veteran F, G and I class racersready to take advantage of a rookie such as

myself.

From my point in the pack, the green flag wasbarely visible. In all my fun race starts I’d lostpositions at the start. Just before the green flagfell the field would suddenly slow down and Iwas always caught in the gutless range of mycar’s 2d gear. And this sprint race started thesame way. (In addition to being a slow driver,I’m a slow learner, too.) But somehow I man-aged to lose only one position at the start thistime.

I lost a second position in the first lap to an I-class car. Then in the second lap I put twowheels off. As I came back onto the track I gotinto the most lurid tail-out situation I’ve evermanaged to recover from. The car swung left, Icorrected, then swung right, I corrected, andthen as it swung to center – I slipped the wheelin my hands, punched the gas, and recovered. But I did get passed by a G-class car. Now I’mdown in 27th position. It was time to focus.

Slowly I gained back on the car that passed mewhile I was having my “moment”. It was anepic battle of the better driver (him) beinghounded by a poor driver (me) with a muchfaster car. I finally caught him and with hisgenerous cooperation made the ugliest pass I’veever seen. The pass was executed in the“Rattlesnake”, a nice tangle of tight curves oneslides through like you’re stealing home. Overthe next few laps I was able to put some dis-tance on him – and the race really became a lotlike a DE, with me on my own private sectionof track.

Then in lap 12, it started to rain. Just my luck –what should I do? I seriously thought aboutgoing into the pits and parking it. “Better to notrisk hurting the car – or getting a 13/13 in myfirst race”, I thought. Then I thought, “Well Iam kind of alone, here – no one is around me.I’m not much of a risk to anyone else, nor any-one to me. Let’s see how it goes. Maybe therain will stop or the race will get called.” So Iconcentrated on my driving, hoping I couldhang on to finish the race without incident.Much to my comfort it seemed that I was moreor less holding station – going about the samepace as everyone else.

FALL IN LOVEFALL IN LOVE

21July 2005 l RMR Porsche

(Continued from Page 19) Then a funny thing happened. I started gettinginto it! I was really beginning to enjoy the rain driving. Somehow I could“wiggle” the car down to the apex, get it pointed up track, roll on the throt-tle, hook up and go. In just a lap or two I was actually going faster thanthe cars in front of me and gaining on them. In an instant I went from hop-ing that either the rain or the race would end – to wanting more rain andmore laps! In just a few laps I actually closed on the field ahead of me thathad been a good quarter of a mile away when the rain had started.

Over the rest of the race I managed to get past a couple more cars andenough racers quit the race to put me up to 18th place for a gain of sixpositions ahead of my grid start. So rookie persistence paid off!

This first race was a real confidence builder for me. I actually did makesome passes – including catching one of the guys that passed me early inthe race. I had dealt with a pretty wild car-out-of-shape situation reason-ably well, which made me feel better about my car control skills. Finally,in the rain, I actually laid down some of the best lap times of the entirefield, gaining on veteran racers who had been out-driving me on the drytrack.

This race also was confirmation of why I’d chosen PCA as my first choicefor racing. The racing was competitive, some of it close, and all of it clean. It was the perfect example of gentlemen racing.

Editor……Congratulations John! What a nice feeling it must have been togain so much confidence in your maiden race. We look forward to seeingyou back up here at our Pueblo race in September.
