ADHD has three general diagnostic symptoms; these are lack of concentration, hyperactivity and or impulsivity. These symptoms develop over time and do not appear all at once. Sometimes, symptoms may go unnoticed or perceived as just being a strange behavior but nothing serious, which is why adult diagnosed with ADHD dismiss the possible fact of having the disorder. The symptoms must also manifest in two or more places, like at home and at work.  To mention some of hyperactivity-impulsiveness symptoms, one cannot sit still and often moves hands or feet, when there is a need to wait in the seat, he stands up and leaves his seat, talks excessively, blurts out answer before a question is complete and often interrupts others. The behavior alters the person’s social and school/work-related functioning negatively. The symptoms do not account for another condition and adults to be diagnosed with ADHD, the symptoms must have been present since childhood.

There are available ADHD medications; however, the medicine alone cannot cure the behavioral problems of ADHD. For one to be treated, proper psychotherapy interventions should be administered as well. While the medication may provide relief, it can also cause some side effects. The physician studies carefully what medication would work best for the adult with ADHD and has the least side effects. It varies from person to person.  Psychotherapy interventions teach the person how to be self-confident despite of the disorder, learn ways to control emotions, and aggression, as well as cope with daily problems, to name a few.  In the end, the adult with ADHD decides on what treatment he prefers, the physician merely suggest what is best.
