What are the Pros and Cons of Corporal Punishment?Corporal punishment is generally used to try to punish someone for doing something wrong and to deter them from doing it again and has a very long history to it. Some kind of physical punishment will be administered and could involve smacking an individual around the buttocks or across the legs or anything else which results in pain. Corporal punishment is sometimes used in schools to rectify a naughty childs behavior; sometimes parents decide to use corporal punishment to discipline their child; while there are occasions when in a judicial setting corporal punishment will be used. Not everyone believes that corporal punishment is appropriate, though, and some think that it actually causes more harm than good. Some studies have shown that spanking your kid, 3 times a week lowers their IQ and some report have said spanking leads your child to bad behavior. While others, personal account, said a little spanking, once a while, makes you more successful latter in life .Parents are in controlCorporal punishment is certainly a very simple and effective method of punishment. Any time a child misbehaves, if his parent smacks him on the bottom the child should learn not to misbehave again. Corporal punishment puts parents or teachers in control, rather than allowing the child to continue misbehaving unchallenged. There is no negotiation or hesitation and so children can quickly identify that when they act in a certain way, there will be physical consequences for their actions. But are parents really in control? However, it could be argued that parents and teachers are not really in control if they need to use physical violence to get their own way.Having discussions and talking to your child could be the best solution. However, it takes time and patience and in the long run, solves the root of the problem, which is educating your child about the right and wrong of their action. It may not solve the problemBesides, there is no guarantee that using corporal punishment is going to stop a child from misbehaving. Instead of encouraging him to behave, he may simply learn that it is acceptable to use physical violence in order to get what he wants. Thus, his bad behavior could actually escalate, so that corporal punishment has very little impact on him. Although the idea is that a child should be punished when he has been bad, there are instances where it may not be clear whether he has done wrong or not. Sometimes, teachers and parents are quick to punish a child without first establishing the facts, so that the wrong child is punished.May affect a childs self-esteemHow can a child learn right from wrong when even his parents and teachers make mistakes? Corporal punishment can become a form of abuse, especially if certain teachers have prejudices which make them more inclined to punish some children more than others. They can hide behind the authority that being a teacher gives them, even though what they are doing is damaging to the child. Being punished for doing nothing wrong is bound to have a negative impact on a childs self-esteem and leave him questioning what he has done wrong. Its against the lawThere will always be individuals who maintain that corporal punishment is necessary for disciplining a child, while there will also be those who believe that corporal punishment is completely unacceptable. In some countries there are laws prohibiting corporal punishment, but it continues to be a contentious issue in most places.
