What are the Family Files? There are over 1500 folders in the Monroe County History Center Research Library’s Family Files collection. Approximately half of the folders were donated to the Research Library in 2009 and later by Mr. Don Matson. What is indexed? The Family Files Surname Index covers people born in or married in Monroe County, Indiana in the 19th century. There must be a clear Monroe County connection in order for a folder to be indexed. If there is no family name in the sixth cell of a row, it usually implies that the family resided in one of the surrounding counties of Monroe County. Surnames in the sixth column, “Other Monroe County (IN) Surnames in the Folder,” were the main result of the indexing project. How can you search the index? Regardless of the column in which it appears, you can locate any surname with the Adobe Reader’s “Find” option. Does the library also have a book on my family? A yellow surname cell in column one means that there is no family folder for that name, but it also contains the call number for a book in the Research Library’s Family History book collection. On the other hand, a white background in a cell that has a call number indicates that both a book and a family file folder are available for the surname. Likewise, a yellow dot on the folder itself tells you that there is a book on the family located on the book shelves. What other information is covered in the index? For many of the entries in the index, other columns indicate whether the folder contains Pedigrees (P), Family Group Sheets (FS), or Family Histories (FH). In some cases, a Civil War or other military unit is listed in the final column, and there may be copies of official military records in the “Local Veterans Pensions” file drawer.
