Greg writes: In designing the new website, we kept in mind several goals: 1. The website should reflect the unique corporate personality and identity of FBC Greenwood as it endeavors to be the "heart and hands of Jesus." 2. The website should provide an up-to-date resource for potential visitors, visitors, and new members to help inform, orient, and inspire. 3. The website should be a living, breathing, ever-growing tool to assist and encourage the staff and members of First Baptist as they participate in the life and work of the church, communicate with one another, and "live, love, and serve in the name of Christ." The layout of the website derives directly from the church's mission statement, which is reflected in the navigational menus and the use of the new logo and branding throughout. Hopefully, you will find it easy and intuitive to use. In order for the new website to succeed in accomplishing these goals, Cindy and I invite and wholeheartedly encourage you to visit soon (www.fbcgwd.org), look around, read, listen and explore. But most of all, we want and need YOUR feedback and suggestions! See errors? Tell us. Something missing? Speak up. Have ideas for improvement? Share! On the last Wednesday of January and the first Wednesday of February, I’ll be showing some slides from our trip. FBC to Roll Out New Website on February 1

What an exciting time in the life of First Baptist Church! At the annual meeting in November, we introduced the new logo. This month, we launched a year-long celebration of our 150th anniversary. And on February 1, we will officially roll out our new church website, www.fbcgwd.org. I want to say a huge THANK YOU to Cindy Lindahl and Greg Anders, who have put countless hours into building the website. They would hasten to add that more work needs to be done, and they would especially add that they need your help to do it. Holy Land Slides on January 29 and February 6

In October, nine pilgrims from FBC Greenwood traveled to Israel and Jordan. On the last Wednesday of January and the first Wednesday of February, I’ll be showing some slides from our trip. Come and see places where Jesus walked and where women and men of the Bible lived out the stories which are central to our faith. I look forward to sharing with you our incredible journey!

Baptist Women in Ministry Sunday

Sermon by Lane Riley, CBFSC Associate Coordinator

Anthem: “Jesus Will Save” Chancel Choir

The Voices of Grace, Youth Choir, is working on the anthems that will be featured at this year’s Festival by the Sea Youth Choir Festival. In fact, the youth choir has been working on the music since before Christmas. This year FBC is blessed with one of the largest number of youth participating in choir over the last couple of years. I am grateful to Gina Jolly and Beverly Psomas for their time and work with the youth each week. Thank You, also, to the youth and their parents for making youth choir a priority in service to the church. The festival this year will be March 6-8, at Myrtle Beach and will conclude on Sunday with a worship concert.

- David Corbitt

The First Baptist Church Diaconate met for their first meeting of 2020. In addition to welcoming the Diaconate class of 2023, the Diaconate welcomed the new Diaconate Executive Committee: Carole Russell, Diaconate Chair; Tom Gordon, Vice Chair; and Lew Dorrity, Secretary. The Diaconate approved the following item as part of their monthly meeting.

1) The Diaconate unanimously approved a recommendation from the Edgewood Cemetery and Mausoleum Board to appoint Brenda Rickborn to the Board.

2) The Diaconate received an update from

the Ad-Hoc Roof Committee.

First Baptist has a very special and unique history. Therefore, in honor and celebration of the church’s 150th anniversary, the First Baptist Church Heritage Committee has developed a series of displays that feature various aspects of the church’s history. The initial display will be placed in the Narthex beginning next Sunday, January 26. The display will feature various pictures and drawings of the different buildings First Baptist has called “home.” Please stop by the display in the Narthex. The display will remain in the Narthex until the end of February when a new display will be unveiled.

Contemplative Wednesdays

On the first Wednesday of each month, there is an opportunity to join others in a time of prayer and meditation. The group meets at 8:30 am in Room 115 for a time of devotion, adjourns to various areas of the church for a time of silent reflection, then comes back together for a time of sharing and closing worship. The session ends at 11:30 am. These prayer experiences include people from other local churches and are open to anyone who would like to attend. There is no obligation to come every month. For more information, contact Amy Jennings or Mary Frances Thompson (229-5557). The next Contemplative Wednesday is February 5.

Never Grow Old, Senior Adult Club (NGO) Follies—

Love Is a Many Splendored Thing

Never Grow Old (senior adult club) begins the 2020 meetings on Tuesday, February 4, at 11:15 am with the Annual FBC Senior Follies. The follies theme this year is “Love Is a Many Splendored Thing” featuring Angela Wyndham Powers. Angela’s amazing vocal ability will be sprinkled throughout an exciting morning of music and fun: men’s quartet, women’s trio, poetry, dulcimer, piano. For lunch reservations, please call Polly Harvin at 223-3240 on or before Thursday, January 30.

“Sunday Night Live”

All youth are reminded to sign up to attend the next “Sunday Night Live” event scheduled for January 26 from 5:00 pm to 7:00 pm. The January event is being hosted by the Craigos at the home of Neil and Laura Hollingsworth (230 Elliott Street). As usual, there will be awesome food, fun, and fellowship.

Youth families and church members are needed to help stock the youth fridge and pantry for the new year! Some suggested items include: bottled water (8 ounce and 12 ounce sizes preferred), Capri Sun, fruit juices (individually portioned bottles-no gallon jugs, please), and caffeine free soda in cans.

Other individual serving size items desperately needed are:

Assorted chips in bags, trailmix, healthy "breakfast bars" or fruit snack packs, and just about any other healthy individual sized snacks.

Donations can be brought to the church office or to The Grind on Wednesday nights. Thank you

Flower Calendar Openings

The flowers on the Communion Table each Sunday add to the beauty of the Chancel. The following dates are available for someone to provide flowers in memory or in honor of a loved one.

Please contact Dolores Watson (223-7049) to reserve one of these dates. Please remember, the persons who contribute flowers are responsible for making arrangements with the florist of their choice to prepare and deliver the arrangements to the church.

Betty Schopp Prayer Shawl Ministry

Betty Schopp Prayer Shawl Ministry meets the third Thursday of each month at 9:30 am in the Church Parlor.

Opportunities for Service

Much of the work in the church is done through committees and the Diaconate. However, there are some areas that are not part of the committee structure or extensions of a committee’s work. Help is needed in at least two of those areas.

Greeters

Greeters are needed at various doors each Sunday to welcome members and

visitors. Greeters help visitors navigate the hallways to find Sunday School classes, Sanctuary, restrooms, etc. Greeters serve once every three months (four times per year). The following slots are open:

Door A-Team 2: April 5, July 12, October 4

Door B-Team 5: January 26, April 26, July 26, October 25 Door B-Team 6: February 2, May 3, August 2, November 1 Door B-Team 7: February 9, May 10, August 9, November 8 Door B-Team 12: March 15, June 14, September 13, December 13

Door D–Team 12: March 15, June 14, September 13, December 13

(Door A is the lower level door near the playground. Door B is the lower level entrance door directly off the bus parking lot. Door D is the lower level doors off the children’s wing near the Boy Scout Room before Sunday School and the Upper level main sanctuary door before worship.)

Sunday Morning Office Volunteers

Sunday morning office volunteers answer the phone during the Sunday School hour and greet and assist anyone who stops by the office. Volunteers are needed to serve the second Sundays of odd numbered months (January, March, May, July, September, November) and the third Sundays of even numbered months (February, April, June, August, October, December).

Anyone interested in helping with greeting or serving in the office on Sunday morning is asked to contact Mary Frances Thompson in the church office at 229-5557 or [email protected].
