WELCOME AND COMMUNITY LIFEAll are encouraged to sign and pass the Friendship Pads at the ends of the pews. As the music begins, let us use this time for quiet reflection and prayer, so that we, individually and as a great crowd of witnesses, may prepare ourselves to reaffirm our faith as the people of God.

CALL TO WORSHIP

In you, O God, I take refuge;Never let me be put to shame. In your justice, free me, deliver me.Turn your ear to me and save me!Be a sheltering rock for me,and a walled fortress to save me;for you are my rock, my stronghold. My God, save me from the hands of the wicked, from the grasp of rogue and tyrant! For you alone are my hope.God I have trusted you since my youth.I have leaned on you since I was born. You have been my strength from my mother’s womband my constant hope.

HYMN # 366 “Love Devine, All Loves Excelling” HYFRYDOL

CALL TO CONFESSION

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

O God have mercy upon us as you hear our confession. We are prone to do work to earn your grace. You have taught us that Jesus is the source of all graceand our salvation, yet we increasingly strive to save our own souls. We scarcely have strength to accomplish such a demand. Teach us again of your love and acceptance in Christ.

Matthew 25 in the PC(USA)A bold vision and invitation

We are a Matthew 25 church!

Our congregation has accepted the PC(USA)’s invitation to follow Jesus’ teachings in Matthew 25:31-46 by becoming active disciples and making a difference in our community and the world.

8

Page 9: wgpc.org · Web viewRosemary C. Mitchell is Senior Director for Mission Engagement and Support of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. In that position she oversees all of mission funding

As part of our Matthew 25 commitment, we pledge to embrace one or more of these three areas of focus:

Building congregational vitality by deepening and energizing our faith and growing as joyful leaders and disciples actively engaged with our community as we share the gospel of Jesus Christ in word and deed

Dismantling structural racism by fearlessly applying our faith to advocate and break down the systems, practices and thinking that underlie discrimination, bias, prejudice and oppression of people of color

Eradicating systemic poverty by acting on our beliefs and working to change laws, policies, plans, and structures in our society that perpetuate economic exploitation of people who are poor

To learn more and for ideas on how to get involved and do your vital part as a member of a Matthew 25 church, please visit pcusa.org/matthew25.

WORD OF WELCOMECHILDREN ARE ALWAYS WELCOME IN WORSHIP AT WGPC! Worship Activity Bags are located at each entrance to the Sanctuary.

NURSERY CARE While some children prefer to stay with their parents in worship, others enjoy the opportunity to meet new friends, play and learn stories from the Bible. Mrs. Robin is ready to greet your child with a happy smile and a generous spirit. The nursery is open from 8:15 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. If there are no children in the nursery by 11:30 a.m., the nursery room will remain open for parents and children to enjoy together. There will be no nursery attendants on duty.

CHILDREN AND YOUTH MINISTRIES Children and youth are not forgotten at WGPC! Classes, activities and fellowship opportunities designed with them in mind happen most Sunday evenings. Please refer to the calendar for ages and times, or contact Cherstin Byers at [email protected] for more information.

LARGE-PRINT BULLETINS AND HYMNALS, hearing devices, and cushions are also available. One of our ushers would be happy to assist you.

OUR UPCOMING COMMUNITY LIFE TOGETHER

Supporting Teens Who are Dealing with Homelessness – November 17, 2019

This year for our pre-Thanksgiving collection the Worship Arts committee is collaborating with our Mission Commission and Epworth Children & Family Services in supporting the youth served at Epworth’s Drop-In Center in Normandy. This center provides many services for youth experiencing homelessness, and we will be creating snack kits for them to share with their clients. Teens dealing with homelessness may be living on the streets, “couch surfing” at friends’ homes, sleeping in cars, staying in shelters, or anywhere that is classed as a non-permanent address. These teens are our sisters and brothers and need our attention, time, and help.

The Epworth Youth Drop-in Center in Normandy provides:

Laundry and shower facilities Safer sex kits and classes Nutrition, clothing, and hygiene items Common areas to safely hang out or sleep, play games, and watching TV Computer work stations Cooking instruction Access to community resources such as STI and HIV testing, healthcare, legal aid, and documentation assistance Resource referrals and information Group sessions offering skills training, recreational activities, and support for LGBTQ youth and allies

10

Page 11: wgpc.org · Web viewRosemary C. Mitchell is Senior Director for Mission Engagement and Support of the Presbyterian Mission Agency. In that position she oversees all of mission funding

During worship on November 17 you can help address these needs by bringing items to help create snack kits, and by joining us in Fellowship Hall between services to create the kits. Items that we need include individual-serving sized packages of…

Granola bars Pop Tarts Vienna sausages Dried meats (jerky or other meat sticks) Nuts Crackers Candy bars Gum Trail mix

As an act of thanksgiving and gratefulness we will bring these items forward during the offering at both services.

OUR RHINO (Rebuilding Hope in New Orleans) TEAM HEADS TO NEW ORLEANS this week to work with Habitat and St. Charles Presbyterian Church, continuing to

bring hope and healing to the city that still feels the impact of Hurricane Katrina.  Please pray for John Castagno, Jean & Linda Magre, Sara Yates and friends as they participate in this important mission work.

WGPC Audit PerformedOn October 14, 2019 the board of trustees received the following financial opinion from the firm of Anders CPAs and Advisors: "In our opinion, the financial statements referred to above present fairly, in all material respects, the financial position of Webster Groves Presbyterian Church as of December 31, 2018 and the changes in its net assets and its cash flows for the year then ended in accordance with accounting principles generally accepted in the United States of America." In other words, the results are "clean" which is what you want! Special thanks to Business Administrator Jan Scheuerer and financial assistant Joyce Kimmons for the many hours coordinating with the audit firm.

Do a little Christmas shopping after church today! As you’re leaving church this morning be sure to stop by the tables out on the front sidewalk to do a little Christmas shopping!  Partners for Just Trade is hosting a fair trade sale and will be selling Christmas ornaments, knit items, jewelry, and many other items handcrafted in Peru, Haiti and Uganda.  Proceeds from the sale directly support artisans in those countries.
