SP O N S O R S C O L UM N THE WEMBLEY

Warwick Greenwood Cricket Club would like to welcome The Wembley Hotel as our Major Sponsor for the next 3 years.

Established in the 1930’s, The Wembley Hotel was the first two-story building in Wembley. It has evolved over the years to be one of Perth’s great icon neighbourhood bars.

The Wembley prides itself on their food. They have an award winning chef serving up a fantastic range of modern selections.

With indoor and outdoor casual dining areas, The Wembley is a great place for lunch or dinner, or to simply catch up with friends and relax on one of our couches.

Become a member of The Wembley Hotel to receive some great offers including a $50 voucher to use on your birthday! Head to their website and sign up today!

UP C O M IN G GAM ES

Stay focused guys; we are awaiting the fixtures to come out from the Association. However we expect the first game to be around the second week of October 2012.

We are trying to organise a scratch match or two prior to the season starting so stay tuned for details!!!

A GRADE (GCC)

Exciting times ahead for our A Grade boys. With the team to be further strengthened by our merger with Warwick CC it bodes well for a successful season moving forward.

B GRADE (WCC)

Having won the one day flag in 2010/11 season the team was looking for a solid 2011/12 season but failed to win enough close games to qualify for finals in 2011/12.

Good to see a number of younger players (Ian Fishman, Mitchell Cameron, Haydn & Ryan Lowth, Lachlan Shakeshaft) handle the step up to B grade cricket.

C GRADE (GCC)

The only GCC to make the finals last year, well done boys. Bigger and better things to come this year.

D GRADE (WCC)

Also defending one day premiers from the 2010/11 season this team suffered injuries to long term players Heath Kimberley and Brad “Romper” Williams early on in the season which hampered their bowling attack noticeably.

Although competitive most of the season the 2011/12 season did not see them competing at the business end of the season.

F GRADE (GCC)

Our F Troop struggled a little last year but it certainly wasn’t from a lack of effort. Looking forward to a big improvement this season under the new banner of the WGCC.

THE REDS REVIEW

NEWS OF THE MONTHWell there is no hiding it, the obvious big news is the merger of two great clubs!!! Warwick and Greenwood have finally come together to form a stand-alone club. There is a lot of excitement around the place with premierships already being spoken about!!! Great news on the sponsorship front! Some excellent work has been done by our committee, in particular Warney, Shane and Justin in securing us a number of sponsors to take this great club forward. Please see our sponsor’s page and ensure you support these fantastic businesses as they are supporting us. Registration day was a big success. In years gone past, this has been a “nothing” day with many members turning up a couple of weeks before the season starts. This year we had over 60 people register on the day! The BBQ was turning out sausages and the amber fluid was flowing. A great result for our new club and one that bodes well for our future.

The playing shorts and club shirts are available to purchase. Training Shorts are $25 and Club Shirts are $30. Both can be bought from the bar. They’re selling like hot cakes already. Don’t forget training starts on Tuesday 4th September, that’s right it’s here already boys!!!

H GRADE (WCC)

Depending on who was available to play depended on this team’s results during the season. Filled with passionate cricketing people they had great success against Sorrento Duncraig’s youthful side in the one day match yet struggled to avoid an outright defeat to them in the 2 day return match. The domain of Bruiser Lang, Sam Clark and our friendly Afghans: Nazza, Jamal, Hummer, Feisal and Shahid. These blokes just love playing cricket, preferably together!

ONE DAY LEAGUE (GCC)

Was a good season and one that has set us up well for a tilt at the flag this season? Just missed out on finals in a very strong competition. Unbelievable captaincy inspired all.

THE REDS REVIEWGOOD NEWS STORYStewy Jenkins has not long got engaged to Sarah. Mr April is going to break a lot of hearts (in particular Gumby’s) about this announcement.

Noodles should be darn close to having a baby with his wife Amanda. Hopefully he/she has more hair than him.

Ryan Lowth's 21st was in mid August. Finally 21, and legally able to do everything he’s been doing since 15.

Ben Taylor also announced his engagement to Mel. He has just finishing paying off the ring. This leaves him debt free of the $99.95 purchase.

DUCK FARMINGThat’s right gents, this year we have a column solely dedicated to the dreaded quack quacker – the big 0, numero zero, nada, nothing, nought, love, nil, zilch, zip, cipher, none, null, shunya, the big donut, goose egg, blank, nix, rock bottom, scratch.

So yes you will be named and shamed if you walk all the way out to the middle and then have to trudge all the way back with a big fat zero against your name.

Not to forget we also have a trophy for the person that scores the most ducks in a season. History calls gentlemen. Rufey is the man currently in possession of this honour. Great batting coach he is too, just don’t listen to anything he says.

For those that don’t know, there is a ‘special’ garment required to be worn for the person who gets the highest duck each round. Stay tuned!

Fussy drinker, is very limited in what he drinks as you will see through out the season

Wine connoisseur, I believe he sells some as well

The Punching bag- Shakey will always come back with bruises on his thighs after and inning or a net session mainly because his block uses his whole body and not just the bat.

What my fellow club members say about me;

He’s a man with many nicknames and there’s always a great story to go with it.

Is a trophy hunter. Interested only in Club Champion points. Most noticeable when he takes a wicket or gets a catch followed by the comment “10 club champion points there boys!”

Likes to talk it up to his apparent “bunnies” on the field only to get smacked to the boundary or bowls it off the pitch. Bowling “Harmy’s” is one of his favourite pass-times.

He’s very committed to the club; it’s good to see from such a young age how much work he has put into the club.

Decent enough bloke, when not in pilling season.

THE REDS REVIEWTHE PHANTOMS COLUMNWelcome to my first ever column as The Phantom. Before I get into it, please be aware that names mentioned in the article have not been changed to protect their identity.

I think it’s fair to say that everyone enjoys a bit of piss-taking. And as one who spends a lot of time in doing so myself (not overly successfully), when asked to write this column I happily agreed.

In all fairness, I figured it wouldn’t be an easy task to write this column considering I have absolutely no experience in doing so. However this did not deter me from giving it a go. As someone who is fairly familiar with the stories of both Warwick and Greenwood players, I thought I might take the first set of pot shots at those Greenwood boys. I think every club has those “token” members – certain members with distinctive characteristics. From what I hear, Greenwood has one of the most annoying players in the association. This man is Richard Corr.

When I asked around the club what they thought of Richie, I got some fairly interesting (but expected) responses. Some told me he is in love with an exotic lady from Thailand. When I asked around for what her name is, no-one was entirely sure. But is said her name could resemble either Ping Pong, Sum-Ting Wong or Hasa Dong. Apparently he was heartbroken when he found out her “appendage” is bigger than his.

Richard has an exceptional ability to get under the skin of opposing batsmen, and come to think of it, bowlers and umpires too. Most who sledge out on the cricket field generally use subtle mocking, with the odd blatant barb, to try get under a batsman’s skin. However Richie and subtle are two words that should never be used in the same sentence. Being on his team is a lot better than playing against him. I wouldn’t be surprised if people have wanted to say a few choice words to shut him up, but you probably have a better chance of starring in a porno with Jessica Alba, Scarlett Johanssen and Mila Kunis.”

THE PHANTOMS COLUMNBut then he manages to take a few wickets, in which he will ever so modestly tell you about. I can’t say he does this with a great level of skill either. This bloke has taken wickets from balls that should have had a search party looking for it (a common theme among Richards in the club). I think even Richie would agree that some of his wickets he’s taken is because the batsman is mentally weak.

What you need to remember with Richie is that he is not generally having a personal dig at you, he just tries to get a rise out of you as he does to everyone. Sometimes, the best way to deal with him, is just to ignore his dribble. But when all is said and done, just remember its better having him on your side than annoying the hell out of you whilst trying to play against him.

Having said all that you would struggle to find a more loyal bloke to not only the club but also to his mates. If you had to go to war, Richie would be the first man by your side.

I hope you have enjoyed this first edition of my column, if not…..tough, I will be back again next newsletter!
