Already Doing: Energy ConservationWent thru 3 empty zones and checked the thermostats, there were lights on, tv's on and thermostats were down to 55(cooling down empty rooms and hallways). Go Figure! I've been doing this for Years!!! I even check the garbage for recyclables, People can be so lazy.

Walk to workUnplug appliances that are not in use ie: washers, lamps, fans, tv's PC's, etc they draw electricity even when turned off.

Adjust Thermostat to save energy (up in summer, down in winter)

Drive < 60 MPH,recycle at home,,got off junk mail lists, use cold water in wash machine,

Use clothesline instead of dryer when possible

Solar panels

I never have my lights on at home unless absolutly necessary.

Keep blinds closed in summer to keep the house cool

Coordinate trips to the stores and bill paying

Buy produce from farmer markets, grow some plants in pots at apartment, can tomatoes and make own jams

Participate in We Energies "Energy for Tomorrow" program

Use energy efficient dishwasher instead of washing dishes in running water

Only use electrical appliances at night, when in warm weather

Use the walk out door in my garage instead of opening the overhead door to leave

Changed entire house over to compact florescent and LED.

Don't use potable water to flush my toilets, Have Solar cells powering my home with a wind turbine.

Already Doing: Water Conservation

When doing dishes i wait to rinse

Rain garden

Don't wash clothes every day if they are clean and it is unnecessary

If its yellow let it mellow, if its brown flush it down! (at home):)

Use Rain Barrel to conserve water

Adjust Shower to reduce water usagePut morning water in a container for my plants instead of just letting it run down the sink.I also take all my plastic utensils home wash and reuse them.Pour Dish Water onto outdoor plants. Non-toxic dish soup acts as natural bug repellant while watering the plants w/o extra water usage.

I don't water my lawn.

Overall Comments: IdeasBattery Recycling what places will take batteries for recycleing?Battery Recycling Do we have special battery recycle bins at GLE?

Bike to workneed bike rack in back of hospital by employee parking. Rack that both tires can be locked on. Not safe to bring bike and leave out front.

Educationi would love to see WF do a better job with being green. Education on turning on and off lights with various style bulbs, places for battery recycling, etc.

Energy Conservation

last summer and it has begun this summer that individuals plug in a desk heater because they say the air conditioning is too cold. Why cant they put on a sweater? The heaters warm up the whole room and is counter productive to the energy that the company uses to cool the room. We need a written policy because no one is seeing this as wasteful and expensive. It is viewed as individual personal preference. I have met with opposition on this green topic. Can you please help.

Green chemicalsI am interested in using "Green" chemicals. I was told months ago that this was coming. Who is working on this?

Light bulbs

I would like the committee that governs this program to reconsider the fluorescent lights stipulation. I disagree that using lights that contain mercury is environmentally friendly in the long term. I do not think that consumers are going to dispose of them in a responsible manner and will, therefore, cause more environmental harm from mercury in landfills, etc.

Waste reduction

We really need to have lab results STOP printing automatically. The doctors review them on line and could print them if needed. This was the plan when we went "paperless" but was never completed.

AwarenessWe should celebrate/ awareness "Green Day" by wearing the color green on a specific day of the month26

Page 27: WFH Green Pledge June – July 2011 1. Green Pledge Participation 3,085 Associates pledged to Go Green! 2

Overall Comments: Waste ReductionI am asked to print off all my work entered into AASC online database and file into resident records. If we are going green, why do we have to print everything out when we have computer databases storing the information? It would also be nice to have a system that allows me to store information so I don't have to save it in a filing cabinet. There's a lot of duplicate printing from other departments coming to our department that we have no control over. If this could be remedied a lot of trees could be saved. We need a new refrigerator on the 3rd floor. Not everyone knows that the freezer section doesn't close properly. It has been a waste of energy.

Overall Comments: Recycling

can we get aluminum can recycling bins for our break room in the ED and plastic recycling bins in the ED pt waiting room and ED loungeWe need more recycle containers for our department, we only have the blue bins that environmental services informed us is only for paper. People do not recycle cans or glass bottles they throw them away in the regular garbage because they are unwilling to walk to the cafeteria to recycle in the designated bins.I EVEN GET TEASED BY MY MOM, BECAUSE I GO TO HER HOUSE LIKE I BELONG TO THE GARBAGE PATROL AND GO THRU HER GARBAGE TO LOOK FOR RECYCLES!!! HOW MANY PEOPLE GO TO THAT EXTREME? I ALWAYS LOOK IN HER GARBAGE, BECAUSE THEY ARE LAZY SOMETIMES. YOU SHOULD HAVE PUT THAT IN THE SURVEY - ARE YOU A GARBAGE PICKER!!!!We need recycling bins for cans, bottlesI'm looking to go green in the cath lab...we're throw away an insane amount of paper/plastic packaging that could be recycled. The amount would be ENORMOUS!! I know that the OR probably has the same situation. I know it would be a HUGE undertaking but would make a significant difference!!I would like to see recycling bins at West Allis for our plastics and non-hipaa paper products. Are we able to have paper recycling bins for our department?we should have more recycle bins in departments.WFMG does not offer recyling bins for other things like glass, plastic or aluminum. It would be nice if each site had a bin for this purpose. With the patients receiving newspapers daily, I think it would be beneficial to have recycling bins available for newspapers easily accessible on the units and it work areasWe only have 2 red recycling bins in our dept. What items can we recylce in it, is it just paper? Maybe print an article in Systemlink to inform all.28

Page 29: WFH Green Pledge June – July 2011 1. Green Pledge Participation 3,085 Associates pledged to Go Green! 2

Overall Comments: RecyclingWe have nothing in our office for recycling of plastic glass, cans, and aluminum. I would recycle all of those if we had something in this office. I do recycle at homewe need recycling bins here if you want us to recycle at work. there are no bins in any of the kitchens except for on 4C. so many cans get throw away in the garbage. also we need paper bins for recyclable paper that doesn't need to be shredded. there are no bins like this behind any nurses station. a lot of waste here that should be recycled.we need to stop waisting paper at work to many copies and unneeded paperI think that it is really horrible that we have recycling bins here but the housekeepers tell me that we don't recycle. The recycling goes into the same garbage as everything else.I don't have anyone to carpool with. Better definement of what can be recycled here would be wonderful! What are they doing with our recycled materials? Girl Scouts recycled bottles and got bags (tote and messenger) from recycled bottles! For trash paper that isn't shredded, would you please set up a recycling program? Also please re-emphasize the importance of using the blue recycling bins and what to put in them. Also, please let staff know where there are recycling buckets for worn out batteries (GI Dept has one for example but hardly anyone knows that)Please give our EVS departments more resources (i.e. money) to purchase more or larger containers for recycling aluminum, plastics, etc. Our department staff is rather large and committed to recycling efforts, so our container fills quickly to overflowing each day and this inhibits staff from doing what they feel is right. We've asked EVS for more or larger containers, but they were not available.Covenant each day disposes of recyclable metals and misc in a large dumpster instead of taking a small amount of time to recycle. I see unused stuff in the dumpster. Instead of it going to the dump, why not separate the metals and etc. out to recycle. How can the associates take going Green when we see the hospital disregard the same thing they are promoting us to do?

Overall Comments: Recycling

It would be nice to have more can recycling bins, there are so many cans thrown in with regular garbage. ThanksI work in the St Joe's professional office building. I often take things home to recycle as there are a lack of recycle bins other than aluminum cans and no one picks up recycled paper here.We have started recycling paper/plastics as well as breaking down cardboard boxes to help with the efforts to "going green"I have observed a large amount of plastic waste from patient rooms that I would think could be recycled. Is it possible (with the exception perhaps to isolation rooms) that we could be recycling urinals, bedpans, or gloves?recycle bins in departmentsI began over a year ago taking from our Breakroom here at work, plastic/cardboard/ metals and glass on my own time to recycle center. We do not have blue recycling bins at the Business Office. We only have shredding bins.it would be nice if there was someplace where we could recycle all the cardboard at the KRC.. there are alot of boxes that get thrown away. Can papers/bottles from home be brought to Covenant for recycling? Where can glass jars be recycled?I use the back side of paper for testing out placement of my volunteer newsletter and other things. Is there a way we could have everyone try this?I already recycle as much as possible. We recycle aluminum cans in our dept. and donate the money to Relay For Life/American Cancer SocietySeparate recyclable papers into those that need to be shredded and those that do not to save on shredding costs.please discuss within your committee the possibility of more recycling in the cafeterias

Overall Comments: Recycling

I answered "disagree" to the question about recycling at work place because we do not have any recycling containers in our office except for the confidential bins. Otherwise, if we had recycling containers for paper, cans, bottles, etc. I would use them.A couple people in Clinic Pt Accts volunteer to take recycling for Clinic and Hospital Pt Accts to outside facility recycle bins. Will we be getting recycling bins that will be maintained and emptied by Wheaton Franciscan Healthcare?I'm hoping that more paper recycling bins will be put out for paper other than shredding. If they are, we don't know where they are.We need more recycling bins at CBO and also need to know who picks up our batteries. There also has to be more education about what's recyclable and what's not. Too many workers toss recycling in the trash rather than recycling here at work.We need more receptacles at SJ that take cans/water bottles/soda bottles - asap!!!!We are a small office currently housed at the MAP, Medical Arts Pavilion (near St. Francis Hospital) and are currently recycling on our own since no one picks up our recyclables. I have asked the question before (on Glad you asked on the Taunet with no reply) as to why our paper, even though it is placed in recycle bins, is not recycled but thrown away.I am continually shocked at the number of employees who do not regularly use re-usable cups for coffee, and do not re-cycle bottles and cans no matter how close they are to the recycling bins. The new green bins do help with the inclusive labeling.

Overall Comments: Personal Commitment

Very motivated to go greenI have been recycling for years and doing my best to conserve. It's nice to see more people interested in this subject.I don't think I'm very green yet. Working on it.While I may not be COMPLETELY COMMITTED to going green, I am making an effort to improve.I am trying to change my ways of going green in my personal life and work. The reason I chose "strongly disagree" to the statement about improvement of recycling through change in my own habits was because I cannot improve upon my current recycling habits - I already do everything I can do in this area.I might not have a lot of time to commit to the Team, but want to try.Sorry I'm unable at this time to give of my time, due to my father's serious illness, but if others organize I would be more than willing to participate! This is a great program and I am looking forward to participating.I have ALWAYS practiced "green" behavior. I could not get much greener! That is why I said I could not make an improvement in my area.Looking forward to hearing more about this initiative!!I was in college At UW-Eau Claire 68-72 when the GO Green movement first started with Earth Day. I continue to be committed to it & happy that WFHC is also on board. Please contac me to be a volunteer in this area.I am retiring in four months so I can't be the leader of a group at our clinic but I certainly will be happy to help as long as I am here. My husband and I have been recycling or composting everything we can for 41 years, as long as we've been married.I have been suggesting many of the above ideas for years here. It is nice that this is finally being taken seriously. I'd love to continue to be a part of it.32

Overall Comments: Personal Commitment

I am SO PSYCHED that this group is forming. Thank You!!Not sure if I have much time to devote to team activities but I want to be supportive of this effort. Glad to see this type of initiative happening here.I would like be stay informed via e-mailI'm so elated that more people are "going green" everyday for the good of the world enviromentI used to be on the Green Team here and we accomplished quite a few things but due to some health issues, I will pass at this time. Thank you!I have been practicing going green for 4 vyears now and plan to continue to keep my carbone print as low as possible.I volunteer at the greenist zoo (Denver) in the country. We will save the zoo $150,000.00 a year by our conservation and gasification plant. I also teach about the climate change and how we impact the world and how humans can make a difference for animals like the Polar bear. I try not to by plastic if I can and wear lots of cotton. I am working on developing a class for the care providers & residents on the CHSP program to begin to go green. To be on a committee at the property you have to have a real buy in, just putting product in and signs up does not make it green, the challenge is education and how they inpact the plant/animals and huge change in lifestyle for some. I think the company is on the right tract. When I recylce the paper used in the office we take it to Day Spring to recycle and we do this about every two months.it is wonderful that wheaton is FINALLY getting into recycling and saving the environment! for the longest time, i have asked for recycling programs here and have not gotten any response. on our unit alone, we use plastic & glass bottles (none of which are recycled) and neither are Styrofoam containers (cups). other staff and housekeeping are known for leaving lights on when the rooms are empty! it is frustrating. i look forward to the programs that will be coming and anticipate my participation. thank you.33

Overall Comments: Personal Commitment

I have been doing most of these items for most of my life. In addition I hang out my clothes to dry, I work with others to reuse, not only recycle (one of the staff members has a family member who is constantly needing boxes, therefore instead of recycling boxes I reuse them by giving them to the co-worker who then takes them to her family member) We all need to be creative in our usage of materials, no matter how common or mundane.I'm willing to change other behaviors on a less than 100% commitment--not always feasible. Turning off lights every time you leave the room in the workplace may be inappropriate and a safety issue. This is extremely important to me personally, and I'm very happy to see FMI taking it seriously as well! :)we enjoy doing all the go green items as a familyI have been a strong supporter of recycling for many years & totally support this program.I am very excited to learn more about how I can help WFHC go green and to take an active role in ensuring our, and my, success!!! Thanks.we always learn in India, how to live economical. it is in our blood. when i recycle papers; i gets comments that why you do that? with all expense one more but save penny a day will become one day big.

thanksI am a strong believer in recycling and reusing. If I can help Marianjoy become more earth-friendly, I will do what I can to help.I have recently purchased a rain barrel at my home; with all of the beautiful flowers is this something our facility is using or may consider using?I currently do a very good job of environmental support from my energy habits to my rain gardens at home. Unless we could work from home, instead of driving an hour each way my improvement efforts will minimally affect the environment as i already do so much. One tip for us Glendale users. In addition to turning off our laptops (those who have them) we should also unplug the power strip, as the power brick is always on even if the laptop is off - just like a cell charger. Please pass along.34

Overall Comments: Personal Commitment

I would like to make additional suggestions about how we as a workplace can do some "small-scale" changes to help make a difference in energy and resource utilization.I am home based. I exercise "green" ideas at home which is my work place, and have for many many years, way before it became "popular".At this time, I don't think I could join a Green Team, but I would be willing to help with projects, inservices, etc. when able.I answered 'disagree' to the questions about the effects of changing my behavior or habits because I have always had 'Green' behavior. Therefore, if I 'agreed' to changed my behavior/habit now.. it would be the reverse of what your are trying to accomplish.I work from home so I try to do as much green as I can in the facility when I am there! In the past I have submitted ideas for employees to bike to work at submitted this idea to human resources, to promote a healthy life style and show that St. Francis hospital employees set a good example in wisconsin. There is a Program in wisconsin called the Wisconsin bike Federation that promotes this type of thing. The last few questions said if I CHANGED my habits, it would make an effect. I already have changed my habits, so any changes would not be helpful. I believe the changes I've already done to make a difference, or I wouldn't do them. Rewording the survey may give you the accurate results you seek.My elder son recently earned his Degree from UWM in Environmental Science we have been recycling more turning off lights using natural sunlight as more as possible. Washing full loads laundry to save energy/water and money. Its a bit challenging at time but I feel if everyone would just make a few small changes it would make a impact on our generations to come.

Overall Comments: Mandatory Participation

If this hospital truly wants to go green, participation should be mandatory. We need to make policies to aid in changing our behaviors and invest in motion sensor lighting and recycled things.I think they should make it mandatory for each and every department to recycle all paper by distributing a recycle bin for non-confidential paper. Many department don't know they even exist. Thank you

Our styrofoam cups are not recycleable at this timeHaving re-useable cups, waterbottles with WFHC logo available to associates at our work site would encourage more people to use them. If reasonably priced, associates would probably purchase these items. Why use plastic knives/forks/spoons? why use styraform plates...both unhealthy for the environment. Please consider ceasing the usage of styrofoam in the clinics and hospitals.Reusable plates, glasses and silverware are not always available in the cafeteria.Franklin cafeteria uses disposable silverware and plates. One big difference that could be made is for the cafeteria to change to real dishes and silverware. This would reduce a HUGE amount of waste. Will the cafeteria be supplying reusable dishes? When I bring my lunch from home I use reusable dishes, but I can't do that when I eat in the cafeteria. If this is a serious effort, the cafeteria should be required to provide reusable dishes and tableware instead of soggy paper plates. The cafeteria would be greener if it used real dishes only, no paper or plastic products. If you had to hire another person, that would help the economy. Current kitchen practices are not at all green. In order to make the cafeteria more eco friendly, lose the styro foam! I have attempted to bring my own dishes, but this is not allowed. Apparently the scales are not calibrated appropriately. If they won't allow your own dishes, then purchase compostable dishes - I have resources for referrals. If we stop using disposable dishes for lunch I wonder who would be responsible to clean up the kitchen with all the dishes that need to be washed? We only get 30 minutes for our lunch and no official breaks. We are able to run get a cup of coffee or run to the restroom if it is necessary but we don't actually get a break. I know it sounds petty but out of 30 minutes I get away from my job in an 8 hour day I don't want to have to do dishes. Other than that, sure we can work as a team to conserve.I think the cafeteria at St. Joseph Hospital could be greener by using ceramic plates instead of paper for dine-in customers. They often use 2-3 paper plates instead of 1 so things don't leak through. The cafeteria at St. Francis seems to have a good system in place with both china and paper plates. The food at St. Francis is healthier too!Other area hospitals have eliminated styrofoam patient water cups and have implemented reusable plastic drinking cups that the patient may take home or clean and reuse at the hospital.

Overall Comments: Energy Conservation

I'm always nagging everyone at work to turn off lights in their offices when they leave for longer than a few minutes, and I am forever going around grabbing recyclables from the trash bins and putting them in the recycling container. I would really like to see us be a little more green.I try not to use the automatic doors, i push the doors openEnsure staff power down computers that are not being used and at the end of shifts/weeks.I am amazed at the amount of electricity paper etc that i see wasted on a daily basis. When i go into a room where the staff takes breaks and find the lights on tv on and no one is in the room. we need to educate people on doing simple things like turning the lights off when not in a room.... etc. i do hope that this corporation will follow thru in "going green" and that this isn't just a lot of talk for a couple of months. now we need to get the grocery stores to turn down the air conditioning, so i don't have to wear my winter coat when i shop!I am very concerned about the usage of personal heaters in the PFS work environment (large communal work area) as it causes the air conditioner and fans to work overtime, both in summer and winter. I feel strongly that the personal heaters should be banned. Personnel should be encouraged to wear socks and warmer clothing so as to not tax resources. The starter of a conventional florecent bulb uses the equivilent of 3 hrs energy use. Turning on and off florecent bulbs multiple times an hour wastes energy.I type from home. My work equipment, stove, frig, furnace, dehumidifier and water heater are the only items that stay plugged in. Unplugging everything else really does make a difference over time.Perhaps a larger number of employees need to practice and remind patients who are able to turn off the tv and large room light when leaving for therapy.in my area there are approx. 32 sets of ceiling lights. we have 6- 8 peolple working in this area and evs insists that all the light bulbs need to be installed into each fixture. so that makes over 96 light bulbs that are on during working hours. is really necessary? some of us think its way too bight down here and such of waste of energy not to mention the carbon foot print for usage on a daily basis. such a waste! We already recycle all of our paper, plastic and cardboard items. Site will be moving in early 2012 so we can really save on energy by consolidating.

Overall Comments: Green TeamsI am already the only Mercy Hospital member of the Iowa Green Team. My biggest fear is that this is "all for show" and when it really gets down to it, such as paying a little more for "green items", Wheaton will not follow through. I hope I am wrong. There is already a committee here.small clinic to form a green teamInterested in joining a Green TeamDepending on time requirements, I could be on the Green Team.I travel around to many sites as part of my job so I would join if time allows for it.As a member of our buildings MAAC team, I would love to see some joint projects with our new Green Team.I already belong to the Green team I hope we get more people interested in this. It is for the future of our children and grand children and ourselves.I am already a member of Green Team. It is good to see Wheaton promoting "greeness" at home as well as at work.I AM ON THE GREEN TEAM AT ALL SAINTSI would love to be on this committee at the market and regional level. I have been passionate about "green" initiatives for year. I even taught RN's in the home care environment how they can assess their patient homes for toxic products.I do not want to be in charge of the Green Team at my site, but I will gladly be a member. I hope Wheaton can make a positive impact on the environment.I am already on a Green Team in Racine and have been on it since the beginning. It is amazing what we have accomplished this far.
