It is my Pecha-Kucha presentation for WFED 597 Scholarly Inquiry class. This presentation includes my journey from my graduation in my master program to the start of my Ph.D program in Pennsylvania State University, and my research focus.

I hope you have better understanding of my research focus by following this presentation.

By the time that I graduate ISU in HRD major, I want to pursue Ph.D program but didn’t have solid plan for answering what want to be when you grow upMy father who is faculty in a Korean university would influence my decision in unconsciously. But more than that my experience in my master program gave me a confidence and a chance to find my passion in this field of study.

I told my decision to my friends

And the most response was like that

Honestly, it is little exaggerated but I remembered that my friends response was quite skeptical

Probably they felt that I am more suitable to practical area.

After I back to Korea, I worked in the practical field. Once as a junior consultant and the other as associate product manager. I could experience issues on this fields such as team work and collaboration.

However, my passion to the study in HRD field is growing and growing.There were three mentors who keep encouraging me while I were in Korea.

Eventually, I decide to leave Korea to pursue my passion to the Pennsylvania state university

For the first few weeks, I stayed my friend house. While I stayed his house, I could buy a time to catch up for my English and basic knowledge of the study again

After I arrived PSU, bought text books and take classes. And all the experience has been since I came here were great. I could have a chance to think more about my research interest and forming toward research focus.

My research interest could be explained as related themes. Group dynamics is one of my research interests. Team is the fundamental unit for task in an organization and by the dynamics of group forming, the performance become different in group level and individual level.Transfer of knowledge. It is directly related with training methodology. My particular interest in this subject is group level learning transfer. As a team they work together and learn from each other. How they learn in this social context. It is my fundamental question.

Collaboration would be regarded as the result of group dynamics and learning transfer. And collaboration is indicated as group level variable. However, collaboration characteristics in each level of layer in the organization and its linkage is still obscuer.

So far, my research interest could be summarized in terms of group, dynamic and collaboration. To investigate variable in this subject, I have been interested a methodology, Social network analysis. The following left side of picture is co-authorship network feature in 2010 AHRD.This complicate interaction could be separated and identified by graphic model equations. By the equation, as you see, one big network group was identified.

The strength of the SNA methodology is not only identify this network, but also you could test the network characteristicsSuch as centrality

And path from particular start point.

My research focus and interest are closely effected by my job experience and scholarly journey. It wasn’t easy eventually to come here and study with you, my class mate and professor, Dr.Passmore.I hope this presentation could be a good chance to show you about my research focus and become a base to develop together.
