Site Considerations Notes

BENCH MOUNTINGYour G8220 Wet/Dry Grinder is designed to beused on a workbench. Make sure it is positionedat a comfortable working height. The machinecan be permanently mounted to a bench byremoving the base and using the four holes in themotor body to secure it directly to the surface ofa bench.

WORKING CLEARANCESWorking clearances can be thought of as the dis-tances between machines and obstacles thatallow safe operation of every machine withoutlimitation. Ensure that your working area offersplenty of room for free movement and a substan-tial amount of distance between you and othersthat may be working in your shop space.

LIGHTING AND OUTLETSLighting should be bright enough to eliminateshadow and prevent eye strain. Electrical circuitsshould be dedicated or large enough to handlecombined motor amp loads. Outlets should belocated near each machine so power or exten-sion cords are not obstructing high-traffic areas.Be sure to observe local electrical codes for prop-er installation of new lighting, outlets, or circuits.

Make your shop “child safe”. Ensure thatyour workplace is inaccessible to young-sters by closing and locking all entranceswhen you are away. Never allow visitors inyour shop when assembling, adjusting oroperating equipment.

SECTION 5: Operations

The dry wheel supplied with the G8220 is an 80grit Aluminum Oxide wheel good for heavy mate-rial removal and for roughing in to approximatedimensions. The wet wheel is a very fine 1000grit which, along with the water supply, allowsfine grinding and honing to very precise edges.Choose the wheel and grinding method appro-priate for your grinding needs.

naturally generated during the grinding process.Secondly, the water acts as a lubricant for thegrinding process improving the cutting character-istics of the fine grit wheel. As you begin grinding, adjust the water flow so there is a steady driponto the surface of the wheel, close to the inneredge. Make sure the drain pipe coming out theunderside of the water tray is directed so it isgoing into some type of container.

Plug the machine in and turn the motor on. Allowthe wheel to get up to full operating speed beforebeginning the grind. Introduce the item to thewheel slowly and carefully, making sure it is fullysupported against the tool rest and miter gauge. For some types of grinds, it may be necessary tosweep the item across the wheel surface by slid-ing the tool rest across the holder. Always lift theitem off the surface when returning to the startingpoint of the sweep. Do not let the workpiece gettoo hot during grinding. If heat is increasing, slowdown the rate of grind, or turn up the water flow.High heat will destroy the temper of the metaland will make it impossible to hold an edge.

Use extreme caution when sharpening anytype of knife, both during and after sharp-ening. Make certain the knife is fully sup-ported by the rest before bringing it intocontact with the wheel. Failure to exercisecare while working near knives could resultin severe injury.

Overview

Wet Wheel Grinding

There are three adjustments necessary to get theproper grinding angle. Tool rest height, tool restangle, and miter gauge angle must all be adjust-ed to get the proper angle of attack on the grind-ing wheel. Be sure the machine is off andunplugged. Lay the item to be ground on the restand lay it against the stationary wheel. Adjust allthree elements until the blade contacts the wheelin the proper orientation. A typical set up for abevel tip chisel is shown in Figure 6.

The water reservoir allows the operator to dripwater onto the wheel during the grinding process. The water serves two purposes. One is to providea certain amount of cooling for the heat which is

Figure 6. Typical wet wheel grinding operation.

Page 14: WET/DRY BENCH GRINDER - Grizzlycdn3.grizzly.com/manuals/g8220_m.pdfG8220 Wet/Dry Bench Grinder -1-Table Of Contents PAGE 1. SAFETY SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS FOR POWER TOOLS 2-3 ADDITIONAL

-12- G8220 Wet/Dry Bench Grinder

Long straight types of blades such as jointer orplaner knives can also be sharpened on thismachine as well. Position the blades as shown inFigure 7, with the miter gauge set at a zeroangle. For this type of operation, it is necessaryto sweep the blade edge across the wheel. Thesliding table retained in the groove of the toolrest holder allows for this sweeping action. Allowthe blade edge to push the circular foam materi-al down, this is perfectly acceptable and helps toinsure the water does not spin off the wheel.

Maintain a constant and steady pressurethroughout the entire range of the sweepingaction to ensure that the blade is evenly groundall the way to its edges. Be sure to avoid over-heating the blades during grinding.

Figure 7. Grinding long knives.

Figure 8. Grinding on dry wheel.

Adjust the angle of the Tool Rest by looseningthe two lock knobs. The angle can also be affect-ed by raising or lowering the entire Tool Restassembly by loosening the hex bolt at the front ofthe wheel guard. Once you have achieved theangle necessary for the item to be ground, makecertain all the adjustment knobs and bolts aretightened so the rest will not move during grind-ing.

Position the Eye Shield so it will cover the grind-ing area. The Eye Shield can be moved up anddown, as well as back and forth, to get it in aposition where sparks will not fly up in the oper-ator’s face. Tighten the adjusting bolt.

For dry grinding, it may be helpful to have a trayof water handy for quenching the piece when itbuilds up heat in the grinding process. Similar tothe wet wheel process, quenching keeps theground item from losing its temper by keepingthe temperature down.

Turn the grinder on and allow the wheel to comeup to full speed. Place the item to be groundfirmly on the Tool Rest and introduce it slowlyinto the wheel. Grinding should be done lightlyand for short duration to avoid damage to thetool you’re working with.

Use extreme caution when working nearrotating grinding wheels. Accidental con-tact with the wheel can cause cuts andabrasions. The spinning wheels can alsopropel items which are not firmly support-ed. Failure to exercise care while workingnear grinding wheels could result in severeinjury.
