Reason: Former residence of James F. Dickason, land developer and prominent civic leader. Dickason was the

head of the Newhall Land and Farming Company from 1951, remaining on the Board until 1995.

During this time he built the real estate development company into a publicly-held powerhouse. As

Executive Vice President of Development, he supervised the early construction and design of Valencia

from 1963 to 1971. In 1971, he became president of the company, and took on the additional title of

Chairman of the Board in 1979. His long tenure at the company paralleled its immense growth,

originally founded in 1883 by the five sons of Henry Mayo Newhall to farm the 220 square miles he

bequeathed to them. For decades the company ranked among the state's ten largest land holders.

Dickason headed the California Chamber of Commerce. He was a trustee at his alma mater, Stanford

University, for ten years; national chair for major fundraising during the university's centennial

campaign; and on the advisory council of its Graduate School of Business. He also supervised

Stanford's Hoover Institution. As a benefactor, Dickason endowed a professorship in the Humanities.

Stanford rewarded him was a Golden Spike and centennial medallion for his fundraising efforts, as

well as the Ernest C. Arbuckle Award from the Graduate School of Business for professional

leadership and public service. In the Los Angeles area, Dickason headed the United Way of Los

Angeles County and was active in the California Museum of Science and Industry, the Los Angeles

County Music Center, and the Southwest Museum. He was a board member and vice president of the

Automobile Club of Southern California, and served on the boards of several corporations, including

Reason: Significant as part of the Janss-Letts residential compound, and one of the earliest residences in

of Westwood. The property served as the anchor property of a "family compound" comprised of five

Janss and Letts family residences which surrounded the northwest corner of the Los Angeles Country

Club property and overlooked the golf course. The Janss and Letts families were early residents of

Holmby Hills and Westwood, and they all constructed showcase residences which highlighted the

architectural character and prestige of the neighborhood to attract potential residents. This property

is one of only three extant residences of the original collection of five Janss/Letts family homes. The

other properties are the Arthur Letts Jr. Residence (10236 Charing Cross), and the Florence Letts

Quinn Residence, a.k.a. "Owlwood" (141 S. Carolwood). Emma Janss lived here until her death in

1944. The property is not visible from the public right-of-way; therefore, the evaluation could not be

Westwood. This house was constructed by the National Thrift Corporation of America as a

developer's showcase house. National Thrift built several showcase homes throughout the

neighborhood. The Janss Corporation endorsed the construction of these elaborate residences as

they attracted prospective buyers who might then purchase a lower-priced lot for themselves. Upon

its completion in 1928, the home was opened to the public, and was toured by thousands of people

before being sold in November of that year. The property is not visible from the public right-of-way;

therefore, the evaluation could not be completed.

Reason: Significant as part of the Janss-Letts residential family compound. "Owlwood," early Holmby Hills

estate and long-time residence of Florence Letts Quinn, wife of Broadway department store founder

Arthur Letts. After divorcing Letts, Florence lived here with her second husband, businessman Charles

H. Quinn. They lived here until her death in 1944, after which Charles Quinn sold the estate. This

property was part of a "family compound" comprised of five Janss and Letts family residences which

surrounded the northwest corner of the Los Angeles Country Club property and overlooked the golf

course. The Janss and Letts families were early residents of Holmby Hills and Westwood, and they all

constructed showcase residences which highlighted the architectural character and prestige of the

neighborhood to attract potential residents. This property is one of only three extant residences of

the original collection of five Janss/Letts family homes. The other properties are the Emma Janss

Residence (10224 Charing Cross) and the Arthur Letts Jr. Residence (10236 Charing Cross).

Subsequent owners of this property purchased each of the adjacent parcels fronting Sunset Bl. (the

property at 10060 Sunset Bl. was the Edwin Janss Estate; the property at 10100 Sunset Bl. was Jayne

Mansfield's famed "Pink Palace.") to expand the estate. The three properties were offered for sale

together for the first time in 2000. The residences at 10060 and 10100 have since been demolished.

founder William Keck, actress Marilyn Monroe, actors Tony Curtis and Janet Leigh, and entertainers

Sonny & Cher. The property is not visible from the public right-of-way; therefore, the evaluation could

development of Westwood by the Janss Corporation. This is an original Westwood Village building.

Originally, the upper stories served as the first women's dormitory for UCLA students, called "Holmby

Hall." The building's exterior was modernized in the 1950s and original features were removed; the

building was rehabilitated in the 1980s. Later, a fire damaged the upper stories and the original clock

tower; the clock tower was reconstructed in 2003. Due to alterations - including some windows, some
