West Nile VirusThe hot weather combined
with heavy rains in parts of thecountry have made this aparticularly bad year formosquitoes, which suggests itcould also be a bad year for WestNile virus, which is spread bymosquitoes.
Last summer’s outbreak of WestNile was the deadliest on recordin the U.S., with 5,674 casesreported. There have been 31reported cases of West Nileinfection so far this year, including 3 deaths. If you haven’talready taken steps to protectyourself from mosquito bites, nowis the time to start. Those includethe following:
• Use insect repellent whenyou’ll be outside.
• Wear long pants and along-sleeved shirt if you gooutdoors at dawn or dusk, when mosquitoes are mostactive.
• Empty standing water fromgutters, flowerpots, buckets, etc.
• When possible, keep yourwindows closed and useair-conditioning. That helpskeep mosquitoes fromgetting inside.
There’s no specific treatmentfor West Nile infection. But seekmedical attention if you develop
symptoms, including fever, headache, body aches, joint pains, vomiting, diarrhea or rash. Youmight need interventions to helpsupport your body’s functionsuntil the infection clears.
