Political Science

“Can We All Get Along?”Sixth Edition

Paula D. McClain and Joseph Stewart Jr.

A bestselling book combining traditional elements of political science analysis with a thorough survey of the

political status of Blacks, Latinos, Asian Americans, and American Indians

Fully updated to include new coverage of President Obama’s first term and the 2012 election, including discussions of•

judicial appointments, the Affordable Care Act, and other policy changes; increased coverage of native Hawaiians; and all

new chapter openers.

Unique combination of field survey and new research: By covering the entire field of minorities in American politics•

and including the newest research on the topic, the authors have created an accessible and respected tool for students and

general readers.

Extensive Comparative Coverage: This is the only book that examines all four major racial minority groups in the US in•

a comparative fashion.

In a nation built by immigrants and bedeviled by the history and legacy of slavery and discrimination, issues of liberty,

equality, and community continue to challenge Americans. In the sixth edition of this widely acclaimed text, Paula D. Mc-

Clain and Joseph Stewart Jr. combine traditional elements of political science analysis—history, Constitutional theory, in-

stitutions, political behavior, and policy actors —with a fully updated survey of the political status of four major groups:

African Americans, Latinos, Asian Americans, and American Indians. The authors show similarities and differences in

these groups’ political action and experience, and point the way toward coalition, competition, and consensus building in

the face of ongoing conflict. Two dilemmas shape the book: How do we as a nation reconcile a commitment to equality

with persistent inequality and discrimination? And what can we do about it—from the perspective of ethnic and racial mi-

norities as well as within the dominant culture?

tations of the Constitution by the Supreme Court, Congress, the President, lower federal courts, and state judiciaries.

Fifth Edition

The European Union

John McCormick and Jonathan Olsen

A thoroughly revised, concise, and comprehensive introduction to the structure, institutions, and policy

development of the European Union

Revised and Updated: All chapters have been thoroughly revised to include recent developments in EU studies as well•

as institutional changes brought about by the Treaty of Lisbon. New material covers the lead up and aftermath of the

Treaty of Lisbon as well as the nature and origins of the current crisis in the eurozone. Overviews have been added to the

start of each chapter to help guide readers.

Geared to the U.S. Market: Most EU texts are written by Europeans with the European reader in mind. This is one of the•

few major EU books written by an American with the American reader in mind.

New Co-Author: With the addition of Jonathan Olsen as coauthor, the text benefits from another point of view and re-•

search experience.

Covering the history, governing institutions, and policies of the EU, John McCormick and Jonathan Olsen argue that the

EU is one of the world’s economic and political superpowers, has brought far-reaching changes to the lives of Europeans,

and has helped its member states to take a newly assertive role on the global stage. Unlike most other books on the EU,

this text pays particular attention to the implications of the EU for the United States. Thoroughly revised and updated,

with many new tables, figures, and boxes, the fifth edition takes into account developments in the debate about the charac-

ter and significance of the EU, changes to the structure of EU institutions, the implications of the 2004 and 2007 enlarge-

ments, the Lisbon Treaty, the origins and nature of the crisis in the eurozone, and key policy developments.

John McCormick is Jean Monnet Professor of European Union Politics and Director of Graduate Studies in the depart-

ment of political science at Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis.

Jonathan Olsen is a professor in the department of politics, philosophy, and law at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside.

Sixth Edition

Pamela S. Chasek, David L. Downie, andJanet Welsh Brown

A user-friendly, comprehensive, and current explanation of the process and politics of global environmental

policy-making, perfect for readers new to the topic

New material addressing current concerns, incliding the latest international environmental regime; the impact of the•

UN Conference on Sustainable Development (Rio+20) on global environmental politics; the challenges of regime imple-

mentation, especially in climate change governance; and the impact of the global economic crises on the global environ-

for introductory students and readers.

Case Studies: The wide range of case studies appeals to varied interests and provides up-to-date, in-depth examinations•

of the most intractable issues in global environmental politics.

Although discussions about the global environment are now a daily occurrence—from companies touting energy-saving

mains a topic plagued by misinformation and ideologically-skewed arguments. For more than twenty years, Global Envi-ronmental Politics has provided an up-to-date, accurate, and unbiased introduction to the world’s most pressing

Religion and Politics in the Middle East

Robert D. Lee

Identity, Ideology, Institutions,

and Attitudes

A comparative analysis of the interacting influences of politics and religion in shaping liberal democratic

development in five Middle Eastern countries

New Case Study: A new chapter focuses on the political and religious climate of Saudi Arabia.•

New Pedagogy: Brief historical chronologies are included at the end of each chapter•

Multi-Dimensional Approach: Lee examines the relationship between religion and politics in the Middle East using four•

different indicators: identity, ideology, institutions, and attitudes in political culture.

Combines Analysis and Empirical Discussions: Early chapters provide context and set hypotheses for how religion and•

politics interact in the Middle East, followed by chapter-length country studies, with a concluding chapter that revisits the

four dimensions and the early hypotheses.

This innovative book analyzes the relationship between religion and politics in the Middle East through a comparative

study of five countries—Egypt, Israel, Turkey, Iran, and Saudi Arabia. Author Robert D. Lee examines each country in

terms of four areas in which state and religion necessarily interact: group identity, ideology, institutions, and attitudes in

political culture. He also considers twenty-five commonly encountered (but often contradictory) hypotheses asserting that

religion is either an obstacle or an aid to political development. The book confronts many questions, including: Is secular-

ization a necessary prerequisite for democratic development? How is it and why is it that religion and politics are so

deeply entangled in these five countries? Why is it that all five countries differ so markedly in the way they identify

themselves and use religion for political purposes?

The second edition is updated throughout and includes an entirely new chapter discussing the political and religious cli-

mate in Saudi Arabia. Brief historical chronologies are also included in each chapter, making this the perfect text for any-

one interested in religion and politics in the Middle East.

Robert D. Lee is professor of political science at Colorado College. He is the author of Overcoming Tradition and Moder-nity: The Search for Islamic Authority and the translator and editor of Rethinking Islam: Common Questions, UncommonAnswers by Mohammed Arkoun.

Expert contributors provide comprehensive, country-by-country analysis of contemporary issues and political

structure in the Middle East and North Africa

Updated Throughout: Essays are thoroughly updated to include events related to the Arab Spring, the US pullout from•

Iraq, and the ongoing Arab-Israeli conflict.

the countries in the region before each country is explored individually.

The Government and Politics of the Middle East and North Africa continues to provide comprehensive, up-to-date cover-

age of the domestic politics and foreign policy of all countries in this crucial region. An introductory chapter written by

editor Mark Gasiorowski offers a comparative overview of the region before each country is explored individually. Each

succeeding chapter is written by a leading expert on the country or countries covered and uses a common framework to

create consistency throughout the book. Each chapter examines the historical background, political environment, political

structure and dynamics, and foreign policy of the selected country. A map, a box providing crucial facts, and an annotated

bibliography summarizing the major literature on the country or countries covered is also included in every chapter.

Mistaking Africa

Curtis Keim

A unique book exploring the many misperceptions and stereotypes about Africa in the United States—with both

historical and contemporary examples, from high culture and pop culture

Delves in to the corners of American consciousness to discover misperceptions about Africa in advertising, movies,•

amusement parks, and children’s books.

Directly confronts many myths we hold about Africa, including stereotypes about cannibalism, tribalism, racial theories•

of evolution, and big-game safaris.

Thoroughly revised and updated with new examples and references, new images from the mid-nineteenth century•

through the present, and a discussion about "Where is the Real Africa."

Accessible writing presents ethical, philosophical, and theoretical issues in a manageable style.•

For many Americans the mention of Africa immediately conjures up images of safaris, ferocious animals, strangely

dressed “tribesmen,” and impenetrable jungles. Although the occasional newspaper headline alerts us to genocide, AIDS,

malaria, or civil war in Africa, most of us know very little about the continent. However we still carry strong mental im-

ages of Africa, which are reflected in American advertising, movies, amusement parks, cartoons, and many other corners

of our society.

Few think to question these perceptions or how they came to be so deeply lodged in the collective American conscious-

ness. Curtis Keim’s Mistaking Africa looks at the historical evolution of this mindset and examines the role that popular

media play in the creation of our mental images of Africa. Keim addresses the most prevalent myths and preconceptions

and demonstrates how these prevent a true understanding of the enormously diverse peoples and cultures of Africa. Up-

dated throughout, the third edition includes new examples and critical thinking questions. New images have been added

from the mid-nineteenth century through the present to provide a history of western views about Africa in a visual format.

Keim also tackles the difficult topic of "Where is the Real Africa," discussing the multifaceted nature of the question and

the importance of not grasping onto stereotypes of Africa’s mythical past. Mistaking Africa is an important book for

African studies courses and for anyone interested in unraveling American misperceptions of the continent.

Pacific Century

Mark Borthwick

The Emergence of Modern Pacific Asia

A broad history of East and Southeast Asia, from prehistory to the current day, in both regional and

country-specific contexts

Dual Approach: The book explores both cross-cutting trends that look at the region as a whole and important historical•

periods in key countries, offering a unique perspective on the topic.

Economic History: Given the growing importance of the region in the global economy, this book spends a significant•

amount of time on economic trends in the region and emphasizes the region’s resilience following the 2008-2009 global

financial crisis.

Updated Material: Recent events placed in historical contxt—Japan’s halting recovery from devastating natural disasters,•

China’s rising internal economic and political tensions, North Korea’s uncertain future under a new leadership—demon-

strate how, amid this startling transformation, Asia’s turbulent past exerts a powerful influence.

The Asia-Pacific region is rapidly emerging as the global economic and political powerhouse of the twenty-first century.

Looking at both Southeast and East Asia, this richly illustrated volume stresses broad, cross-cutting themes of regional

history, with an emphasis on the interactions between cultures and nations. In this updated third edition, Pacific Centuryprovides a significantly revised introduction, which places the contemporary rise of China within the context of the politi-

cal, cultural and economic evolution of the region since ancient times. The text then considers more recent developments

in their historical context, balancing national and international factors underlying Asia-Pacific economic growth and polit-

ical change.

A comprehensive yet concise comparative introduction to the leading nations of South Asia

New Material: Benefiting from the fresh perspective of a new author joining the team, the seventh edition is thoroughly•

avoids editorializing or choosing a side.

This comprehensive but accessible text provides readers with a systematic introduction to the comparative political study

of the leading nations of South Asia: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, and Nepal. The seventh edition is extensively

PrivilegeThird Edition

Edited by Michael S. Kimmel and Abby L. Ferber

An innovative anthology expanding the concept of privilege and exploring gender, class, race, sexual orientation,

(dis)ability, and religion

Explores privilege from all angles: Being white and male are not the only conditions for privilege, as this innovative an-•

thology demonstrates by delving into the multifaceted and intersectional aspects of privilege and oppression, from race,

gender, class, and sexual preference to (dis)ability and religion.

New and recast readings capture current thinking. In addition to ten entirely new readings, certain selections have been•

recast in a fresh light by their contributing authors.

Enhanced pedagogy—including discussion questions and “personal connections” activities—encourage readers to exam-•

ine their own assumptions, beliefs, values, and practices without becoming overwhelmed or defensive.

Privilege is about more than being white, wealthy, and male—as Michael S. Kimmel, Abby L. Ferber, and a wide range of

contributors make clear in this innovative and timely anthology. In an era when “diversity” is too often shorthand for “of

color” and/or “female,” the personal and analytical essays in this collection explore the multifaceted nature of social loca-

tion and consider how gender, class, race, sexual orientation, (dis)ability, and religion interact to create nuanced layers of

privilege and oppression. The individual essays are powerfully thought-provoking; taken together, they help guide readers

to a deep understanding of the dynamics of diversity and stratification, advantage and power.

Kinship and Gender

Linda Stone

A lively introduction to cross-cultural variations in family structures and kinship while illuminating the

multifaceted nature of gender roles around the world and over time

Updated case studies: Stone revisited all of the case studies for the fifth edition, editing those held over from earlier edi-•

tions with a contemporary reader in mind and incorporating new cases with a broader geographic range, addressing topics

ranging from reproductive technologies to polygyny to globalization.

New material on kinship and evolution: Stone devotes more space to synthesizing recent strides in the scholarship on•

primate kinship and the evolution of human kinship.

Expanded discussion of gender throughout the text, as well as expanded discussion of contemporary social issues such•

as abuse, political unrest, and rapid socio-economic changes.

New chapter on the globalization of kinship. •

Cross-cultural perspective: Stone looks across societies and cultures—including the United States—as she explores the•

mechanisms that produce particular gender roles and kinship structures in particular contexts.

Does kinship still matter in today’s globalized, increasingly mobile world? Do family structures continue to influence the

varied roles that men and women play in different cultures? Answering with a resounding “yes!”, Linda Stone offers a

lively introduction to kinship. She firmly links these concepts to cross-cultural gender studies, illuminating the malleable

nature of gender roles around the world and over time.

An Introduction

Written to engage students and general readers, each chapter provides key terms and useful generalizations gleaned

through cross-cultural research on the interplay of kinship and gender in both traditional societies and contemporary com-

munities. Detailed case studies help readers understand how such generalizations are experienced “in real life.” Stone also

considers the ramifications of current social problems and recent developments in reproductive technology as she demon-

strates the relevance of kinship and gender to students’ lives.

The fully revised fifth edition features discussion of cross-cultural examples complimented by expanded coverage of kin-

ship and gender dynamics within the United States. Stone considers current evolutionary research on kinship and gender,

and offers new case studies addressing international adoptions and polygynous marriage. An entirely new chapter explores

the globalization of kinship in the twenty-first century. The result is a broad and captivating exploration of anthropological

approaches to family and gender.

Feminist Thought

Rosemarie Tong

A critical introduction to the major traditions of feminist theory, now with new considerations of existential

feminism and a conclusion reflecting on the future of feminist theory

An eminently readable, yet critically acute, overview: The book provides a comprehensive introduction to the immense•

variety and richness of activist, literary, and philosophical feminist thought.

New section on existentialism: Chapter 5 has been expanded to include new discussion of existential feminism in con-•

junction with postmodern feminism.

Revamped chapter on women of color feminisms: Chapter 6 has been thoroughly expanded and revised by Tina Botts•

of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte to more broadly discuss women of color feminism in the U.S., as well as

global, postcolonial, and transnational feminisms.

Feminist Thought offers a clear, comprehensive, and incisive introduction to the major traditions of feminist theory, from

liberal feminism, radical feminism, and Marxist and socialist feminism to care-focused feminism, psychoanalytic femi-

nism, and ecofeminism. The fourth edition has been thoroughly revised and expanded, including a new section on existen-

tialism as it relates to postmodern feminism in Chapter 5, and a new conclusion that contemplates third-wave feminism

and the future directions of feminist theory. Chapter 6 on women of color feminisms was also significantly revised and ex-

panded by Tina Botts of the University of North Carolina at Charlotte. Learning tools like the new end-of-chapter discus-

sion questions, and the bibliography, organized by topics within chapters, make Feminist Thought an essential resource for

students and thinkers who want to understand the theoretical origins and complexities of contemporary feminist debates.

Computer: A History of the Information Machine traces the history of the computer, and shows how business and govern-

ment were the first to explore its unlimited, information-processing potential. Old-fashioned entrepreneurship combined

with scientific know-how inspired now famous computer engineers to create the technology that became IBM. Wartime

needs drove the giant ENIAC, the first fully electronic computer. Later, the PC enabled modes of computing that liberated

people from room-sized, mainframe computers.

This third edition now extends beyond the development of Microsoft Windows and the Internet, to include privacy and

online security, open source, social networking, and illegal file sharing. A new focus on computer applications in banking,

insurance, and manufacturing as well as and exploration of “Dot Commerce” is included, with an emphasis on Google,

Yahoo, and Facebook. The authors will also explore the economics of free versus proprietary information in a globally

connected world. Computer is an insightful look at the pace of technological advancement and the seamless way comput-

ers are integrated into the modern world. Through comprehensive history and accessible writing, Computer is perfect for

any reader interested in the computer’s technological origin.

Sociology

Social Theory

Edited by Charles Lemert

The 20th Anniversary Edition of this bestselling reader moves beyond the classics by encompassing a truly

inspiring range of ideas that comprise the current understanding of social theory

New “20th Anniversary” Preface that not only introduces the fifth edition, but also looks back on this iconic book’s his-•

tory and assesses developments in social theory over the past two decades.

Cutting-edge new material: This edition has been thoroughly updated to address important new and evolving topics, in-•

cluding mobile technologies, the virtual realm, masculinities, bare life, and more.

New “Context for Social Thought” timelines: Six new timelines visually present included readings against the backdrop•

of significant events in social and world history.

For over twenty years Charles Lemert has scoured the canon of social theory, pulling together long-established classics as

well as engaging modern writing to create an essential collection of social theory from the nineteenth century to the pres-

ent. In this heavily revised fifth edition, Lemert reevaluates the received canon and reasserts this iconic text’s place in the

standard curriculum.

Classic, essential texts from thinkers like Marx and Du Bois remain; other key writers, like John Dewey and Raewyn Con-

nell, are presented in a new light; and leading figures in the discussion of twenty-first-century society, such as Elijah An-

derson, Bruno Latour, and Achille Mbembe, are anthologized here for the first time. In addition to classic and

multicultural readings, the new fifth edition introduces a discussion of global social theory as well as important new and

evolving topics like mobile technologies, the virtual realm, masculinities, and bare life. For the first time, timelines are in-

cluded to visually present readings against the backdrop of significant events in social and world history. With more than

100 authors, thinkers, and scholars represented, the fifth edition of Social Theory is an essential component of any inter-

ested reder’s bookshelf.
