Musings from Matt . . .
Covenant is our scriptural theme during this season of Lent. Recalling God’s covenant, recognizing and remembering all that God has done for us and all that we do for one another. Covenant is about relationships and their nurture. We make covenants trusting that God will carry us in them. As we approach Easter we are coming to the celebration of that most precious of all covenants: that covenant unbreakable in Christ’s sacrifice for us. Holy Week approaches and by the time you read this will be upon us. We begin our worship and celebration of Holy Week on Palm Sunday, March 25, with a production of Hear is Love by our Chancel Choir under the direction of Mr. Paul Kraus, accom-panied by Mr. Steven Eaklor. From Christ’s Triumphal Entry to the Upper Room, Gethsemane, the Trial through the Glorious Resurrection, Hear is Love takes us on a musical journey through Jesus’ last days. On Maundy Thursday, March 29, at 6:30 PM, we will share in an Agape Meal together in our church social hall. Jesus was sharing the Passover meal (The Seder) with his disciples in the Upper Room on that night of his arrest. The Agape Meal, a remembrance of that Last Supper, was a worshipful practice of the early church. Please join us for this very special observance. We are asking that you sign up so that we’ll know how many tables to prepare. And on Easter Sunday, April 1, to highlight our Easter Morning worship, we will gather at the Lord’s Table for the Celebration of the Sacrament of Holy Communion. As our observance of Lent draws to an end, I hope that your spiritual life will be uplifted with these special opportunities to gather together as the people of God, that part of the Body of Christ that we know as Westminster Presbyterian Church of Joliet. Come and share in the Covenant. Shalom, Matt

SPEND AN EVENING WITH JOHN DEAR ON HIS NEW BOOK:
They Will Inherit the Earth: Peace & Nonviolence in a Time of Climate Change
April 5, 2018, 7:00-9:00 PM
San Damiano Hall, University of St. Francis,
520 Plainfield Road, Joliet, Il, 60435
You are invited to the University of St. Francis on April 5, 2018 for an evening of reading, reflection and book-signing with longtime activist, priest, author and Nobel peace prize nominee John Dear about his new book, “They Will Inherit the Earth,” a landmark work which connects the way of active nonviolence with soli-darity with Creation; shows how our global epidemic of violence and war could only lead to catastrophic cli-mate change; and why we need to help build up the global grassroots movement of nonviolence if we are to protect creation. He cites Jesus’ third Beatitude as the basis for his meditation: "Blessed are the meek, they will inherit the earth." Thomas Merton said "meekness" was the biblical word for “nonviolence” (in the Gandhi/King sense), so Dear notes how Jesus connected nonviolence with oneness with creation, how he practiced nonviolence and lived at one with creation, and how we need to do the same. John Dear will invite us to rise to the occasion, deepen our nonviolence, take new steps into active solidarity with Mother Earth and suffering humanity, and do what we can to welcome a new culture of peace and nonviolence. Rev. John Dear is a long-time peace activist, lecturer and teacher, and the author of 35 books including Thom-
as Merton Peacemaker; Lazarus Come Forth!; Living Peace; The Nonviolent Life; and The Beatitudes of Peace. He has
been nominated many times for the Nobel Peace Prize, including by Archbishop Desmond Tutu. He works
with CampaignNonviolence.org and the Vatican Nonviolence Initiative and lives in New Mexico. (Contact

Thank you from Church World Service
Dear Friends:
Thank you for your kind donation of Emergency Clean-Up Buckets to Church World Service. Your
compassion has given individuals and families touched by disaster the tangible evidence that they
matter. That someone cares. And they are not alone.
Disasters can strike anywhere, anytime. And they can take many forms: tornadoes, earthquakes,
civil conflict, drought, hurricanes and more. Caring people like you—who understand the urgency of
responding after a disaster—allow people in crisis to receive help when they need it, and hope for
the future.
Here at home or overseas, when tragedy strikes your donations ensure that help is never far behind.
With deepest gratitude,
Rev. John L. McCullough
President and CEO
Thank you from Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
Dear Friends:
I write simply to say thank you, for making Presbyterian Disaster Assistance a priority out of many
opportunities to give and serve. Your gift is deeply and greatly appreciated, and I am privileged to
speak this word of gratitude and its aftermath.
As the book of James tells us, every generous act of giving, with every perfect gift, is from above,
coming down from Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shadow due to change.
(James 1:17).
Your gift(s) are perfect, a blessing from God above in a moment where it is most needed here be-
low. It is a privilege to serve together in a Church that makes such giving reliable, and provides con-
stant faithful partnership to brothers and sisters across the world and here at home shadowed by the
challenges and changes brought by disaster and war.
In Christ’s peace,
The Rev. Dr. Laurie A Kraus
Director, Presbyterian Disaster Assistance
