    WELCOME

ON THIS HOLY NIGHT, we engage one of the deep mysteries of our faith. In celebrating Christmas, we try to push away the cares of the moment and the rush of things to do. As we worship, we create a wide, sweet space to listen, to pray, to sing, and to receive the gift of God’s presence. No one will ever make sense of how God, the Infinite, was revealed in the finite. So we tell a story and simply wonder at it all. Welcome to a house of wonder.

ANNOUNCEMENTS We welcome everyone to Westminster Church for these Christmas Eve Services. A special welcome is extended to visitors and those who return for the holiday. If you live in the Wilmington area and do not have a church home, we hope you will consider uniting with our church family. You are invited to continue your Christmas Eve celebration by attending one of our Candlelight Communion Services tonight at 8:00 p.m. and 10:00 p.m. Childcare will be available for the 8:00 p.m. service. The Chancel flowers this evening are given to the glory of God and in loving memory of Charles M. Krick, Jr. and Janet and John Rowell by the Linderman, Krick and Rowell families. Each Christmas our deacons and other interested volunteers take poinsettia plants to our homebound members. If you would like to participate in this heart-warming activity, just take a plant with you following the 8:00 or 10:00 service, and stop by the receptionist desk where you will find a box of cards and a list of homebound members. Simply write your name next to the person you plan to visit this week, and take the addressed flower card for that person from the box. Church Holiday Hours: The Church will be open December 27 and 28 from 9 am to 12 pm if you wish to pick up a poinsettia for delivery and/or drop off a year end donation. All donations postmarked by December 31, 2012 will be considered received and credited on your 2012 contribution statement. If you have questions concerning your 2012 pledge status, please email or call Debbie Brown ([email protected] or 302-654-5214)

Sunday, December 30: One morning service at 10:00 a.m. Join us as we continue to celebrate the Christmas season. We will offer Nursery and Sunday School for Preschoolers.

    FAMILY SERVICE 4:00 P.M.

    CALL TO WORSHIP

Come away, come away, come today to Bethlehem. Come adore on bended knee, one whose birth the angels sing.

Come away, come away, from your noisy celebration, to a place of quietness and peace. Come with wonder, come with awe. Take your place among sheep and cattle.

Sing with joy, praise God, for the time of promise has come. Sing the good news of Emmanuel:

God-with-us! Joy to the World! *CAROL “Joy to the World” ANTIOCH Joy to the world! the Lord is come: Joy to the world! the Savior reigns: Let earth receive her King; Let us our songs employ; Let every heart prepare Him room, While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains And heaven and nature sing, Repeat the sounding joy, And heaven and nature sing, Repeat the sounding joy, And heaven and heaven and nature sing. Repeat, repeat the sounding joy. *OPENING PRAYER

Holy God, you came to Mary and Joseph, to the shepherd and angels, to the little village of Bethlehem. Come now to us: be born in us this night. Amen.

*CAROL “It Came Upon the Midnight Clear” CAROL It came upon the midnight clear, For lo, the days are hastening on, That glorious song of old, By prophet bards foretold, From angels bending near the earth, When with the evercircling years To touch their harps of gold: Comes round the age of gold; “Peace on the earth, good will to all, When peace shall over all the earth From heaven’s all gracious King”: Its ancient splendors fling, The world in solemn stillness lay, And the whole world give back the song To hear the angels sing. Which now the angels sing.

JOSEPH’S DREAM Matthew 1:18-24 *CAROL “O Little Town of Bethlehem”

O little town of Bethlehem, How silently, how silently, How still we see thee lie! The wondrous gift is given! Above thy deep and dreamless sleep So God imparts to human hearts The silent stars go by. The blessings of His heaven. Yet in thy dark streets shineth No ear may hear His coming, The everlasting light; But in this world of sin, The hopes and fears of all the years Where meek souls will receive Him, still Are met in thee tonight. The dear Christ enters in.

THE JOURNEY AND THE BIRTH Luke 2:1-7 CAROL “Gentle Mary Laid Her Child” TEMPUS ADEST FLORIDUM

Gentle Mary laid her child Gentle Mary laid her child Lowly in a manger; Lowly in a manger; There He lay, the undefiled, He is still the undefiled, To the world a stranger. But no more a stranger. Such a babe in such a place, Son of God, of humble birth, Can He be the Savior? Beautiful the story; Ask the saved of all the race Praise His name in all the earth, Who have found His favor. Hail the King of glory!

SHEPHERDS HEAR THE NEWS Luke 2:8-14 CAROL “The First Nowell” THE FIRST NOWELL The first Nowell the angel did say They looked up and saw a star Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay; Shining in the east beyond them far, In fields where they lay a-keeping their sheep, And to the earth it gave great light, On a cold winter's night that was so deep And so it continued both day and night. Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Born is the King of Israel. Born is the King of Israel. SHEPHERDS GO TO BETHLEHEM Luke 2:15-20 CAROL “Angels We Have Heard on High” GLORIA

GIFTS IN CELEBRATION OF THE CHRIST CHILD

The entire Christmas Eve Offering is given to those in need beyond our walls. Please see the back cover. A CHRISTMAS LITANY

We have celebrated Christmas with Mary and Joseph. We have rejoiced with the angels and the shepherds. We have celebrated the birth of Christ Jesus, our Lord. Lord, you came to live among us, caring, loving and healing us. Make us your arms, your hands and your feet. Use us to care for your people. Lord Jesus, be with us. Lord, you bring peace and pardon. Bring peace to our hearts and love to our homes. Guide the nations; let there be justice; let there be hope. Lord Jesus, be with us.

Lord, you blessed the home of Mary and Joseph. Bless our homes this Christmas and make our families a blessing to others. You were born in a stable, then driven out as a refugee. Shelter the homeless. Open our hearts to those in need. Lord Jesus, be with us. Lord, you were born among the poor. You experienced hurt and pain and disappointment. Strengthen the weak. Care for the sick. Comfort those who are suffering. Lord Jesus, be with us. Lord, you bring joy to all people. Be a friend to the lonely. Lift up the depressed. Your birth brings new life to the world. Give life and health to all babies, to the unborn, and to those who are born this night. Go with the dying into their darkness, and lead them to resurrection. Lord Jesus, be with us. Be with us tonight and always. Be with us as we journey through this life and when our mortal journey ends, Be with us now and forever. Amen.

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE CAROL “Silent Night” STILLE NACHT Silent night, holy night! Silent night, holy night! All is calm, all is bright, Shepherds quake at the sight, Round yon virgin mother and child! Glories stream from heaven afar, Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Heavenly hosts sing: “Alleluia”; Sleep in heavenly peace, Christ the Savior is born, Sleep in heavenly peace. Christ the Savior is born.

Silent night, holy night! Son of God, love’s pure light Radiant beams from Thy holy face, With the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth, Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

    FAMILY SERVICE 5:30 P.M.

INTROIT “Hallelujah Round” Grace Hawthorne & Buryl Red Sunshine Choir & D.R.U.M. Arr. Sandie Reinicker & Mary Beth Davis CALL TO WORSHIP

    Let us go, just as we are, to see what has happened. Let us go with the shepherds;

    let us go and find the One of whom the angels sang. Let us go with those who are wise;

let us go and find the One who brings God's truth to us. Let us go with the poor in spirit, and in flesh; let us go with those who are humbled by life.

Let us find the Glory of God born in a stable, and placed in a feeding trough.

Let us go with our friends and family, let us go with our neighbors and with strangers, let us go with all the children of God.

Let us go to find the One who comes to lead us home to God's kingdom.

O come, let us go to the Babe of Bethlehem; O come, let us adore him!

Christ our Lord! *CAROL “O Come All Ye Faithful” ADESTE FIDELES 1st Verse: Choirs 2nd & 3rd Verses: All

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee, Born this happy morning, Sing, choirs of angels, Sing in exultation! Jesus, to Thee be all glory given; Sing, all ye citizens of heaven above! Word of the Father, Now in flesh appearing! Glory to God, all Glory in the highest! O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him, O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord! O come, let us adore Him, Christ the Lord!

    PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Light of the World: you gave us the glorious birth of the infant Jesus as a light for our path. Yet we confess that we shut our eyes to the light. Often we do not want to see the gift you have given us. We admit our reluctance to see and share our gifts with our sisters and brothers. We are often dazzled by the glitter and tinsel the world has made of Christ’s birth. Let your Spirit be lit within us, that we may share your gifts of peace and justice with all people. Let us receive again the precious gift of Christ’s birth among us. Amen.

OFFERTORY ANTHEM “Let the People Praise” Grace Hawthorne & Buryl Red Sunshine Choir & D.R.U.M. Arr. Sandie Reinicker & Mary Beth Davis A CHRISTMAS LITANY

Miraculous God, We know this story so well. All the characters are familiar. All the words are known by heart. All the songs have been sung so many times. We love this story and its comfortable, comforting familiarity.

We praise You for the miracles which come to us in the familiar. At the centre of this story is the eternal God stepping into human history. The All-Powerful One choosing to live in fragile flesh. The Creator becoming a creature.

We praise You for the miracle of God becoming human. At the centre of this story is a God Who reveals Godself to men and women. A God Who works miracles through ordinary people who say, "Yes" to God. A God Who enters every willing soul to birth new life.

We praise You for the miracle of Your life within us. Miraculous God, May we see You, know You and be united with You again this Christmastime.

May our lives be changed by Your miraculous love, and may we become part of Your miraculous plan of salvation Now and always. Amen.

LIGHTING OF THE CHRIST CANDLE CAROL “Silent Night” STILLE NACHT Silent night, holy night! Silent night, holy night! With the angels, let us sing, Holy Infant, so tender and mild, Alleluia to our King; Sleep in heavenly peace, Christ the Savior is born, Sleep in heavenly peace. Christ the Savior is born.
