ISSUE 1 AUGUST 2018

School Newsletter “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord …

plans to give you hope, and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

Page 2: Westlake Newsletter AUGUST - 5th Grade With Mrs. Harrisharris5th.weebly.com/uploads/2/3/7/2/23721557/... · 2 COMMUNITY We will be using a program called TRIBES to focus on the power

theologian, a counselor, a historian, and a lover of

literature and art. I hope this year to install a passion

for all the subject matters in the students’ perspective.

When you ask your child what his or her favorite class

is ... I hope they say, “I like them all!” The truth is, we

do not learn subjects with any depth by keeping them

separate. Rooted knowledge comes from anchoring

what we learn, to what we know and comprehend.

Interdisciplinary connections will be a big part of your

child’s curriculum this year. From studying great writers

and their influence on history, to understanding how mathematical principals apply to art and science ... it is

sure to be an exciting year for us all.

“Students must be taught HOW to think, not WHAT to think.” - M. Mead

A LITTLE ABOUT MRS. HARRIS! I graduated from Edgewood University in 2004 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education, and received my Master’s Degree in 2007 from U.W. LaCrosse in Education and Professional Development. Since then, I have worked on various committees and taken courses that have strengthened me in categories like: adolescent psychology, standards-based grading, 21st Century literacy, and technology implementation. Last year I became an Educational Ambassador to the Field Museum of Chicago, and this year I am a teacher leader there. I have taught 4th, 6th, and 8th grades, and have developed a passion for educating student holistically, honoring their God given spirits, talents, strengths, and contributions to our community of learners. I look forward to knowing your children.
