enhance the social aspect of this edge.

Sustainability: Seek opportunities to integrate and express stormwater management in the park design,
especially given the site topography.

1 - ART
The Denny Triangle area has had many incarnations. It was a hilly place; then it was re-grad-ed; then it was a flat area with low buildings, car dealerships, and lots of signs. Now it is transforming into a high tech high-rise neighborhood.
The artwork is about the changing identity of place. In contrast to a place having the same name and many identities; the artwork renames the park every day.
The names will be successively displayed on two large signs, one facing outward and one facing in toward the park. The changing names are fictional places from literature; they are meant to give the visitors a feeling of escape or fantasy. They will also inspire web searches and reading discoveries. The list of fictional place names will be partly obtained by interview-ing residents about their favorite books. One of the signs will display places from fiction read by adults and the other will display places from fiction read by children.
The fictional places are places we might be quite familiar with and we can visit in our minds, while a real place has many histories that are invisible to us.

Lenora Street between 7th and Westlake is proposed as a pedestrian oriented street. Special paving and certain landscape details will be implemented to create a totality of open space experience between the proposed redevelopment on Block 20 and the existing building.
Curb bulbs will be proposed to narrow pedestrian crossings. SDOT and DPD staff have confirmed that the raised crosswalk at 7th and Lenora should be explored to act both as traffic calming measure and for ease of crossing. Along with special paving pattern, rolled curb or lower curb height (4 inch minimum) can be explored to promote public use of the street. Street parking will be on the south side of Lenora. Food trucks can be encouraged to add vitality to the shared use street.
Crosswalks will be added to cross Westlake Avenue from Block 20 and from the corner of 8th Avenue to the future city park which is currently the Enterprise parking lot. Special paving pattern will also be encouraged on Lenora Street, adjacent to the future park.

As South Lake Union continues to grow, the need to activate and beautify Westlake – the main commercial avenue in the city’s largest live/workneighborhood – is critical for the success of Seattle’s development and evolution. Improving the character of the pedestrian & transit corridor that spansfrom Downtown to Lake Union will benefit local retail businesses, corporate offices and the growing residential population, as well as cultural destinationssuch as Lake Union Park, MOHAI, The Center for Wooden Boats, the future Northwest Native Canoe Center, the future Westlake & Lenora Park, andMcGraw Square. This will ultimately lead to more vibrancy and community pride.
This community-based project enhances the streetscape with plantings, seating areas, ‘streateries,’ cultural signifiers and lighting, all done with asculptural sensibility that ties the entire route together. The areas for improvement are generally focused at the existing tree bases, which have causeddestruction of portions of the sidewalks and have proven difficult to cultivate plantings amongst the existing dense root bases.

brought into the design process as soon as possible. The Commissioners saw great opportunity for integrated art-work at this site and, at the next review, hopes to see detail on the play structure design, how it will work for all ages, and how it enhances the experience of the place. The Commissioners appreciated the water feature but, given its cost and small size, encouraged the team to think carefully about its design so it truly enhances the park.
ActionThe Design Commission thanked the project team for the presentation of the concept design of Westlake & Leno-ra Park. The Commission is excited to review the first of 14 landmark park sites that will be developed with funding from the Seattle Parks District.
Overall the Commission appreciates that the project team:• Has conducted substantial public outreach and used it to inform the park design• Is carefully considering the surrounding urban context, particularly given the quantity redevelopment occur-

While Parks is jointly applying with GID to vacate the alley between Westlake Ave and Lenora St, today’s review cov-ered only the park development as a CIP project. The Commission approved the urban design merit of the proposed alley vacation on September 18, 2014, and will review public benefit later this month.
With a vote of 9 to 0, the Design Commission approved the concept design of Westlake & Lenora Park with the following recommendations:
Art• We appreciate that the play element is more than merely a traditional play structure, engages children and
adults alike, and is an artful element that contributes positively to the park even when not in use. • Given the important urban location of this park, we highly recommend that the City provide One Percent for
Art funding. We encourage the design team to work with the Office of Arts and Culture to bring an artist on board as soon as possible. Integrated artwork is a critical part of the design solution for the park.
Edges• Consult with Jennifer Wieland and SDOT for early guidance on the Street Improvement Permit (SIP) process in
order to understand the relevant standards that may inform the design of the Westlake streetscape.
The Commissioners were enthusiastic about the “artful” play structure and hope to see more detail at the schematic design phase.
The Commission recommended that the team consider the entire Westlake corridor as they design this edge of the park.
