A Note from the DirectorA Note from the DirectorA Note from the DirectorA Note from the Director
Welcome! It is particularly apt this year that we are producing Fiddler on the Roof, not only as one of the most beloved classics of the American musical theatre, but in celebration of the 50th anniversary of the show’s Broadway premiere in 1964. As the world has witnessed tensions in Ukraine escalating to dangerous levels in re-cent weeks, the political and ethnic conflict at the heart of Fiddler on the Roof offers a haunting reminder of this region’s turbulent history of ethnic tension. Based on the classic short stories by Ukrainian Jewish writer Sholem Aleichem, and having been inspired by his experience of the ethnic confrontations tearing up Ukraine in the early twentieth century, the stories represented in Fiddler on the Roof
bear an eerie parallel to the contemporary situation.
Beyond its political relevance, Fiddler on the Roof is worthy of celebration for its beautiful score and its timeless message of the need for tolerance and understanding between people. The classic song “Tradition” represents the deeply held pride of this Ukrainian Jewish community for its faith and heritage, and we experience the traumas in the life of Tevye and his family as they run up against dangerously potent levels of anti-Semitic prejudice. We also feel for Tevye as a father trying to raise his children in accordance with the traditions of his faith and his community, and his struggles when three of his treasured daughters make choices that directly challenge those traditions. It is a story of changing times, changing attitudes. The changes are difficult, challenging, and messy. Pride and prejudice are tightly interwoven, and the characters of the play are
caught in the middle.
My thanks go out to my hard-working collaborative team and the gifted students who have invested so much of their heart, time, and
energy into this production.
Mazeltov, Fiddler! Enjoy the show.
