Mesilla Democrat: The well posted andwide awake foreicn immigration agent ofthe Santa Fe road is a regular artesianwell of information about New Mexico, ber people, climate, soil and everythingelc; and ho ia reputed to have never failedto give a satisfactory reply to the most

question ever aprung upon himby the moat inquisitive seeker after infor-mation. Last year, while escortingparty of people through tbe territory, hehad gotas far aa Lis. Cruces, and, in re-

Pilver Belt: E. L. Higdon, 'of Armor,Gila county, left at the Blt office for in-

spection, a curious and valuable specimenof antique pottery, which he dug from amound in the rear of Supervisor Powers'pasture. It 1 a perfectly fashioned duckabout four inches long aud hollow, with anopeni.ig in the top of the he;;d. A amailhole through the tail and a loop (nowbroken) at the back ot the head wereprobably connected by a strip of bark orleather to aerye aa a handle. The back ispainted to represent feathers. There is ablack cirele around the neck, three stripesacross the breast, and black rings withwhite centers to represent the eyea. Thespecimen ia evidently of very ancientworkmanship, wholly unlike any potterymade by the Apaches, and would be high-ly prized by antiquarians.

Reporter. Capt. J. S. Stidger, eprcialagent of the general land office, haa wonthe confidence aud esteem of tbe peopleby his efforts to assist honest aeltlcra inpeifecting thair titlea. Unlike his prede-cessor, he does not consider it his of.b ialmission to stir up trouble aud involve hon-

A TIÍAT FOR A WITNESS.

Many years Ago I took a trip tlirouj;liwhat was tlion culled, the "Fur West."My cou rs'3, fur the most pari, lay throughun unbroken forest. T)iouli n wttkVscabin here and there broke the wildmonotony, tuany a day wiui panned with-out the higlU of a liuhitation or meetinga human being.

One day I came up with two men whohnd disniuunted at tin' wnyaide, and wereseated on a o cliattinjr, hile theirhorses IitowsckI ciubly at a little dis-

tance. One of the two. like inyuclf, wasevidently a traveler, while the tow clothhunting shirt and cooiiHkin cap of theother to Hay nothing of his long rilleand weather face betokened thegenuine lackwooUamun.

For some timo 1 had ticen waiting anopportunity of iiiiiiiiii!; the way toadistant settlement, at which Í proposedmaking a temporary stop, and here, doubtless, was the very man to supplythe information. .

"Jest 'light an' rest your critter a min-il.- "

said the woodsman, when 1 had putmy question: "ine'u this gen'leiuan '11 bethrough piesently."

Accepting the invitation I soon dis-

covered tliHl the busmes I hnd inter-rupted was a liorse trade, which, ofcourse, took precedence of every othermatter.

The "swap," which had already madesubstantial progress, was speedily con-

cluded. The traveler, whoso animal wassomewhat jaded hU reason probabivfor seeking thu exchange gaVe the fron-tiersman $20 "boot," and. .mounting hinew hackney, took a hasty leave, appar-ently desirous not to give the other partylime to "rue.

I related my inquiry, and was toldthere was no road, not even a .bridleiiath. within many miles of where wewere, leading to the place 1 wished toreach. I offered to pay the man liberallyto guido me to some point whence I couldfind uiy way alone. A bargain was atonce concluded, and iu less than half anhour we were jogging uloug like oldacquaintances.

That night wo camped out, supping onsonio jerked venison my gmdu had in hitpouch, and tethering our horses in theedge of a small praino which affordedgood grazing: and the next afternoonbut one wo struck a traveled track, which, my companion assured me, 1 hadonly to follow straight ahead to reachmy destination.

Here we shook hands and parted: andit was a month afterwards at my ownhomo that my western journey was viv-

idly called to mind by the followingparagraph :

"A Traveler Murdered. By our lasladvices from we earned that an un-

known traveler as found murdered onthe 1st of June las'. The act was at lirstattributed to some marauding hamN ofIndians who have l:(ely shown them-selves troublesome. lJut later develop-ments fasten the crime on John Stover,a white man, found in possession of thedead man's horse and some money iden-tified by a tavern keeer who had changedn noto for the traveler tho day before hitbody was discovered. The latter wai ;ist seen alive in Stover's company, thetwo having ridden away together fromthe stranger's last stopping place. Thocriminal barely escaped lynching andwill have little to from a jury ofthe vicinage."

"John Stover!" I exclaimed. "Why.that's the name of my late guide!"

The recollection of the horse trajecame back like a flash. It had takenplace on the last day of May, and fromthat till tho 2d of June Stover never leftluy company. It was impossible hecould have committed the crime forwhich his life stood in peril. The "swap"explained his possession of the liorse, tmd the "boot money'1 that of the. billfound upon him.

There was no time to lose. If an inno-cent man was to bo saved from the gal-

lows. The mails were too tedious androundabout to be trusted, and the tele-

graph wus yet uninvented. There wasnothing for it but (o stage it us lar aspracticable, and make tho rest of theway on horseback. At any cost I fellbound to prevent the wrongful taking ofa fellow creature's life.

It was nearly dark when I reached asettlement twenty miles from where thutrial was to come off. It was set'down,I learned, for the following day, and tobe in time I must proceed that night.

"The road is hard enough to lind bydaylight," raid the host of tho little innlit which I had ordered up)K rand a baitfor uiy I. one. "Ucsides, there ure

prowlii: nlxuit, ui'd they're uglycustomers to meet with of a night."

"I ha no choice," I replied. "A man. is to be tried fur his bid ,

whose innocence I rau prove; Tor he wasiu my company, miles from the scene ofthe crime he is chsigud with ut thu timeof Its commiuHiou.

but if you miss your way," returnedthe other, "you will lose instead of gainlinii."

"f.'rVsp one o' t!iec gentlemen," I

said, turning toa group of three w ho hadbeen listening attentively, "will ngreo toguide me. I nm willing to pay liberallyfor tho service."

The three conferred apart briefly."I'm summoned n a witness myself,"

said ofie. "but I hadn't intendeJ etnrtln'just Mt. However, if you're in a hurry,1 don't mind keepin' you company."

I thanked him for his friendly offer, and we were soon iu our saddles.

"There's a shorter cut thun goin' by therond," said my companion, when wo wereclear of the settlement.

I gave myself to his guidance, nnd heled the way into the woods, which wereopen enough to be ridden through with-out dilliculty. -

We had gone but a mile or two, when,"Hush!" the man whispered.

A sound of galloping behind was plain-ly nud'ble. .

"Indians! We must ride for our lives!"raid my comrade, in the same low whis-per. "I'ut your liorse to- - his best, am)keep straight dhead, while I bri:ig upthe rear and look out for the rasáis."

Clapping spurs to my liorse, on whosespeed and spirit 1 knew I could safelycount, 1 was noon considerably in ad-vance of my companion. There was noluo.nl, but the starlight enabled me toavoid the tribes, nnd heedless of thescratches from the thick undergrowth 1

lushed on.Suddenly, with a frightened snort, my

horse reared till he stood almost upright. The quickness of the motion threw mefrom his back. Then losing his balance, the terrified annual, with a shriek more, piercingthr.n human Voice ever uttered, plunged headlong over thu precipicewhich the foliage had concealed, undwent crashing down upon tho rocks far

That I was the victim of treachery wasthe first thought that flashed iiK)ii me;and the next was mat the safety of, mylife deK'iided on tho belief of my ene-mies that it had already been destroyed.

Quietly as jiossible 1 crept beneath theshelter cf a thicket and laystill. Oefore long I heard voices, nndoon a light was struck: and wKh a torch

of dried bark, which one of them held. 1

distinguished the features of the threemen seen ut the inn. one of whom hadvolunteered to be-- my guide. They foundthe tracks of my horso where he hadgone over the brink, and gave a laughof satisfaction.

"Now, Stover must hang beyond adoubt." said one, "aud wo may breathefreely: for had his innocence been provedthe suspicion more than once whisperedagainst ourselves would liavo been re-vived, and who knows what might havehappened?" .

Then they discussed among Ihemsclvecthe sickening details of the murder, olwhich they had been the real authors, and chuckled over the money they hadgotten by it. -

At last they went away, and as soon asit was safe I left my hiding place, andafter several hours' wandering cameupon anettler'scabin. ' Arousing the pro-prietor. I uiude known my circumstances.Ho was a frank, honest fellow, disposedto give every assistance: and, saddling ucouple of horses, we started nt daylightfor the seat of justice.

Tho last witness had given his testi-mony when I entered. Poor John Stoveihad nothing to offer but his steady as-

sertion of his innocence, and his unsup-ported explanation of hij posjcssiou olthe horse and money.

"Aro there tiny witnes es for thetho judge inquired.

"There is one," 1 anuwercd, at tho endof a painful pause.

The prosecutor nnd the prisoner's coun-sel both looked surprised.

"Docs any one know this gentleman;"asked the former.

"I do." said thu judge, in whomlrecognized an old college friend nnd classmate,"(.tmie forward, Mr. Wythe."

My testimony soon released the pris-oner from his ieril. and put in his placethu real criminals, who, in additton tothe murder actually lying at thc-i- r door, had con. e so near having another to an-swer for. True Flag.

l'lv rXllliuns 4f SoMIcr,Some years ago an idea suggested ilselt

to an obscure workman of Uelleville. unidea that since thou has engendered anarmy, amply qualified, were it a questionof numbers alona, to realize the dreamo eternal peace by keeping in check theassembled armies of Europe. He sets onfoot 5,000.000 soldietii a year. These a

are of humólo origin, but so wasNapoleon. They spring frmu old sardineboxes. Kehgated to the dust hole, thesardine box is preserved from destructionby the dustman, who sells it to a ragmerchant in U.'llevillu or iu Ilultcs disu-nion t, who in his t urn disposes of it to asiR'cialist, by whom it j then preparedfor l lio manufactories. The warriorsare inado from tho bottom of the box;the lid and bides are used for guns, rail-way carriages, bicycles, etc.

All (his may seem unimportant at iir.stsight, but tli3 utilization of thru; oldsardine Uou m has resulted iu the foun-dation of tin enormous manufactory, utwhich no Ires than workmen ore em-

ployed. I went there the other day, und, no one suspecting mo of being apolitical corre- iioiideiit, I was admittedwithout diiiicuity to 11 view of tho gn atuiseiuil und its 5,000,000 warriors. The
