Company OverviewThe company provides the INTEGRI-TAG™ SYSTEMfor the fail-safe analysis of livestock DNA. This uniquesystem comprises of a tagging gun, special tissuecollecting tips and a sorter/extractor. The tagging gunis a mechanical actuator assisted device that makesthe tagging task easy and very humane compared withexisting technologies. The tips are specially designednot only to capture the DNA-containing tissue, but alsoto preserve the sample indefinitely. This is in contrastto current tissue collecting devices that require thesample be analysed within two days of collection, whichgenerally is not a viable option for potential users giventhe lack of an appropriate infrastructure.

Product InformationTechnology: The INTEGRI-TAG™ SYSTEM is the firststep in a more efficient and effective DNA analysisprocesses. The system facilitates in a seamlessfashion the fail-safe: 1) traceback of future productsfrom the animal; 2) genetic profiling of the animal forbreeding and management purposes; and 3) theft-proofing by verifying the ownership by DNA

comparison. The INTEGRI-TAG™ SYSTEM will enablethe effective tracing of meat products throughout theentire food chain. The system assists with establishinganimal identification through the collection of abiological sample of a particular animal for subsequentDNA analysis. This tissue sample collected at birth istaken and preserved in 2-D matrix coded capsulesusing the INTEGRI-TAG™ SYSTEM. The capsules aresorted and deposited in 96 wellplate frames by thecompany’s proprietary Extractor. The 2-D codes areread with a cheap digital camera and the position ofthe sample with its corresponding eartag number isthen stored in the database. The tissue is then eitherdissolved with a weak NaOH solution or the entiretissue sample is extracted for further processing.

• strategic alliance with BioFocus , a leading UKbased drug discovery and chemistry serviceprovider listed on AIM, which gives AustCancerongoing access to a product pipeline of potentialtreatments; and

• a flexible listed structure with the capacity toaccommodate a number of commercial structuresto suit potential partners.

Product InformationPentrix™ Vaccine - Has the potential to treat up to 50%of all cancers unlike most cancer therapies which aretargeted at very specific cancer types. Does not involvethe use of cells as is common with current cancervaccines. This gives Pentrix™ advantages overcompeting technologies due to reduced cost ofproduction, reduced time taken for treatment and lesscomplex regulatory issues. Many cancer vaccineshave to be individually tailored to the patient. ThePentrix™ vaccine is universal, the same vaccine beingadministered to all patients.Pentrix™ cancer vaccine is - a broad-spectrum cancervaccine which targets mutations in the p53 tumoursuppressor gene; a mutations in the p53 gene arepresent in up to 50% of all cancers; the Pentrix™cancer vaccine is an anti-idiotypic vaccine, whichovercomes the issue of self-tolerance, which is a majorbarrier for most cancer vaccines; patent, which coversa panel of synthetic human antibodies produced bythe p53 tumour suppressor gene.

These are the only human p53 antibodies currentlyavailable in the world; phase 1 clinical trial has beensuccessfully completed and phase 2 is due tocommence in the second half of 2003.Breast cancer therapeutics - Using extensive chemicallibraries, state of the art high throughput screeningand retroviral display technology discovered a familyof small molecules that target the same receptor familyas Genetech’s breast cancer treatment, Herceptin($1bUS market); 50:50 joint Venture with BioFocusplc; advantages of a small molecule include, lowercost of production and greater stability/effectiveness;potential treatment for hormone unresponsive breastcancer. ChK1 Kinase - focused on discovering smallmolecule inhibitors of ChK1 kinase which is involvedin cell cycle arrest in response to DNA damage; suchan inhibitor is likely to increase the effectiveness ofradiotherapy and some chemotherapies, reducingdosage and therefore toxicity; and 50:50 Joint Venturewith BioFocus plc.

The company has operated since 1988 withits origin in Western Australia and was incorporated inmid 1997 in Ontario, Canada and went public inSeptember of the same year. The company ownsproprietary bacterial oxidation technology that liberatesprecious and base metals from difficult to treat sulphidesores and concentrates. It has the advantages ofimproving metal recovery at significantly lower capitaland operating when compared to the traditionaltreatment methods of smelting, roasting and pressureoxidation. BacTech is a proven leader in thecommercialisation of bacterial oxidation technology inthe metal extractive industry. Bacterial oxidation is thesafe, environmentally friendly use of naturally occurringbacteria to aid in the extraction of precious and basemetals from sulphide ores and concentrates.

Product InformationBacTech owns innovative technology for use in theextraction of precious and base metals from difficult toprocess refractory sulphide ores and concentrates. Ourtechnology uses bacteria to break down the mineralmatrix by oxidation and release the metals for recoveryby conventional means. A wide range of precious andbase metal ores have proven amenable to suchtechnology. Gold can be freed by oxidation from themineral matrix in which it is held, and once in residuecan be recovered by cyanidation. Base metals such ascopper pass into solution and can be recovered using

solvent extraction and electrowinning. The process iscarried out at ambient temperature and pressure whichreduces capital and operating costs compared toalternative processes carried out on a similar scale.

Company OverviewEQiTX has an interest in the field of biotechnologyresearch and its outcomes, as can be applied to ouraging population. As our generations age, many chronicailments will affect our current lifestyles. Hence, EQiTXis seeking to acquire technology at different stages ofscientific development that will aid in the maintenanceand/or improvement of human health for generationsto come. The main areas of interest are humantherapeutics and diagnostics associated with chronicillnesses, such as Alzheimer’s Disease, Cancer,Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease.

Product InformationIn December 2002 EQiTX signed a heads of agreementto acquire the Gingerol project – its first investment underthis model. The technology was developed in the School

20

of Pharmacy at The University of Sydney, whereProfessor Basil Roufogalis and his team isolated andsubsequently synthesised new active analogues froman extract of the plant, Zingiber officinale. These newcompounds may have advantages over conventionaltherapies in the use of chronic peripheral and sensorypain. These compounds may also offer new treatmentsfor diseases causing inflammation such as arthritis, where current drugs have significant safety concerns. The Gingerol project has novel potential drugs basedon Ginger and Capsaicin and these are being developedfor the management of pain and inflammation. Thesecompounds, based on the active constituents of plantswith traditional use in inflammatory and painfulconditions, have been shown to be vanilloid receptorantagonists as well as COX-1 and COX-2 antagonists.Compounds binding to vanilloid receptors represent apromising new approach for the development of novelanalgesics whilst compounds inhibiting COX-1 and COX-2 are known to reduce inflammation. Initial animalstudies have confirmed the positive pharmacologicalactivities of the lead compounds in models ofinflammation and pain. They are also less pungent thancapsaicin and initial toxicity studies have revealed noobserved side effects on acute administration.Furthermore, the lead compound has demonstratedcomparable, if not better pain management effects(analgesia) than morphine without indications oftolerance and dependence identifying a potential clearmarket advantage.

Company OverviewPhylogica owns specialist, value-adding technologiesfor the drug discovery process.Phylogica’s technologies constitute a drug screeningplatform (called “Discriminator Blocker Trap”) and anenriched libraries of peptides (called “PhylomerLibrary”) that can be used for drug target validation andscreening and validation of drug leads.

Product InformationDiscriminator Blocker Trap - is a high throughputscreening platform enabling the isolation of blockersof high affinity and specificity to a given protein-proteindisease complex. The two features unique to thescreening technology are - the ability to discriminatebetween a disease protein-protein complex and anormal complex involving either one of the proteins inthe disease complex (resulting in drugs that havereduced adverse side effects); and the ability todistinguish blockers of different affinities, allowingselection of high affinity blockers to a given drug target.Phylomer Library is a proprietary library of potential drugleads and target validation reagents constructed froma range of fully sequenced microbial genomes. Thelibrary consists of structured peptides and is superiorto random combinatorial peptide libraries in terms of –the quality of drug leads (more stable since Phylomerpeptides are naturally coded), the complexity of library(contains 100-1000 fold more potential drug leads) andthe bioinformatic power (generated from bacterial/archaebacterial genomes for which the entire geneticcomposition is known).

Company OverviewTitan Resources NL is a mining and mineral explorationcompany based in Western Australia and is listed onthe Australian Stock Exchange (ASX Code: TIR). Thefoundation for Titan’s recent growth came from thesuccessful mining operations at Radio Hill. Followingthe completion of operations at the Radio Hill massivesulphide orebody containing nickel, copper, cobalt andpalladium in September 2002, the company hasaccumulated substantial cash reserves, which haveenabled the progress of it’s innovative Bioheap™bacterial heap leaching process and enhanced thecompany’s ability to carry out an active and excitingprogram of exploration, directed specifically at basemetal deposits available to use for the Bioheap™process.

Product InformationTitan Resources NL has been involved in thedevelopment of a new, innovative process for theextraction of base metals from sulphide ores. Thisprocess is called BioHeap™. BioHeap™ uses aspecialised and proprietary strain of bacteria to oxidisethe sulphide components of mineralised material torender them soluble in a dilute sulphuric acid solution. The bacterial culture breaks the iron and sulphur bondswithin the mineral thereby releasing the associatemetals, copper, nickel, cobalt zinc etc into solution. Thisnatural process is enhanced by the irrigation of a solutionover coarse ore stacked in a heap, as in typical heapleach operations. BioHeap™ has substantialenvironmental benefits in the form of minimal pollution, minimal greenhouse gas emissions and low energyconsumption.

Company OverviewVRI BioMedical (VRI) is a diversified biomedicalcompany focused on the development andcommercialisation of biotherapeutic, diagnostic andvaccine projects that have global markets. These

projects focus on the prediction, prevention andtreatment of diseases in the field of mucosal immunology(the immune system). These include cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, respiratory and gynaecology diseasestates. VRI is an ASX listed company with corporateoffices in Perth, Western Australia. Scientific and clinicaldevelopment activities are based in Sydney andNewcastle, New South Wales with clinical developmentoccurring in several global locations.

Product InformationVRI BioMedical Ltd is developing a range of projectsbased on many of the immune processes describedabove. These projects fall within three developmentplatforms, namely diagnostic tests, biotherapeutics andoral vaccines.

Diagnostic Tests - An enormous wealth of informationregarding the type and progress of diseases can bedetermined by the measurement of various factorsinvolved in the immune response, eg. specific antibodiesor cytokines expressed. VRI diagnostics are based onthis principle and are predictive of a number of differentdiseases and conditions.

Biotherapeutics - Biotherapeutics (also known asprobiotics) are microorganisms fed to a person insufficient quantities to elicit a beneficial response tohealth. VRI is developing a range of products based onthe ability of certain bacteria to boost the host’s immuneresponse to infection and disease and/or preventinvading microorganisms from attaching and growing.Importantly bacteria must be delivered to the smallintestine alive, metabolically active and in sufficientnumbers. VRI has shown that only specific strains ofbacteria will provide these benefits. VRI is developingbiotherapeutic products to prevent and/or treat suchconditions as diarrhoea, irritable bowel syndrome,allergy/asthma, dermatitis and endotoxaemia. TheCompany has already completed a supply agreementwith a large global marketing and distribution partner tosell “PCC™” Lactobacillus fermentum, one of VRI’sexclusive biotherapeutic isolates.

Oral Vaccines - Vaccines are innocuous forms ofinfectious organisms or their toxins that retain the abilityto produce an immune response. The body will thenproduce a vigorous and highly specific response to theantigen should the antigen present again in the future.
