WESTERN AUSTRALIA SKILLS IN DEMAND LIST

OPPORTUNITIES IN WESTERN AUSTRALIA Western Australia is currently experiencing unprecedented sustained growth, largely driven by an expanding Mining and Resources Sector, creating opportunities across the whole state. Recently released Gross State Product figures for 2003-04 showed that the Western Australian Economy recorded its strongest rate of growth on record, faster than any other Australian state or territory. Western Australia also attracted the largest number of migrants for a decade in 2003-04 when there were 15,411 settler arrivals. For this growth to be sustained Western Australia needs and welcomes skilled migrants in the many areas of skills shortage identified in the Skills in Demand List. This list identifies skills in demand as follows: Skills in demand throughout Western Australia; Skills in demand in each of the nine non metropolitan regions;

and Skills in demand in the Perth Metropolitan Area.

WESTERN AUSTRALIA Western Australia’s vast area is divided into ten regions. To get an idea of the scale of Western Australia, the Mid West Region covers and area twice the size of the United Kingdom. All Western Australian regions make a significant contribution to Australia’s economy. The greatest proportion of the population lives in Perth which is located to the west of the Wheatbelt Region and North of the Peel Region. Of the State’s 2 million people over 1.4 million live within the Perth Metropolitan area. The non metropolitan regions make an impressive contribution to Australia’s trade performance with 2.7% of the population they produce 22% of Australia’s exports. Each of the nine non metropolitan regions has a regional development commission. Clicking on the map above will take you to the section relevant to each development commission. Migration is a significant component of Western Australia’s strong population growth. In 2002/03, net overseas migration made up 65% of Western Australia’s population growth. This growth is set to continue with $5 billion worth of resource projects that are either planned or underway involving 30,000 construction jobs and resulting in over 6,500 permanent jobs being created.
