Another week passes in Western Border footy, another set of ‘what ifs’ get tossed up into the breeze.Last week’s stars

1. Like father, like son. Shane Malcolm was a great warrior for Portland in another era, son Ben looks like he hasn’t fallen too far from the tree.

2. The North midfield will be a key ingredient if the SA Tiges are to grab overdue premiership glory, so it’s good to see Paddy Perry back and firing at the right end of the season.

3. Jon Copping may yet hold a couple of aces up those hairy sleeves come September.

THIS WEEK:

Millicent v ImperialsThe Sainters danced around like ugly ducklings at Blue Lake last week, and in the process lost a great chance to consolidate a top three berth. But back on their home patch, it should be a different story. This might come down to a power surge at the sharp bits of the park, with Hughie Douglas up against the Ice Man at one end, and Gascoyne and Bennett giving the warhorse Jason McIntosh plenty to think about at the other.Millicent by 24 points

Hamilton v PortlandThe Pies have stayed true to the plan all year, and in the process have learned that while you can’t stop the waves, you can learn to surf. The Vic Tiges have been steady, if a little predictable, throughout the journey to date. With Chapman, Egan and Falcone etc very capable midfielders, maybe it’s time to release Bentley back to the pointy end to mix things up a bit.Portland by 22 points

Casterton v West GambierNo point combing over the bald spots, both sides have had seasons that can’t end quick enough. There is a lot not to play for here- the wooden spoon. SATURDAY, August 11, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Hello, This weekend we’re celebrating the DonateLife Round of the Western Border Football League and Netball Association competition.

It will be great to see players and officials sporting the magenta DonateLife wristbands and we hope everyone will be proud to wear them in support of the life-saving and life-transforming gift of organ and tissue donation.

DonateLife SA has supported the competition over the 2012 season in a bid to reach out and educate more people about the importance of organ and tissue donation for transplantation.

The DonateLife network is nationwide – each state and territory has an office that coordinates all local organ and tissue donation activities.

Public awareness is one of our priorities – we need you to discover the facts about organ and tissue donation, decide about becoming a donor and register that decision on the Australian Organ Donor Register (AODR) and discuss that decision with your family and those closest to you.

Although last year’s national total of 337 organ and tissue donors, who saved or improved the lives of 1,001 Australians, was the highest ever – there is still an urgent need to increase donation rates.

At any one time, around our country, there are more than 1,600 people awaiting life-saving transplants – they and their families live in hope that will happen before it’s too late.

Two of DonateLife SA’s Donation Specialist – Coordinators Heylen Laver and Ali Ankor are in Mount Gambier today for the DonateLife Round of football matches and netball games so do come and have a chat with them.

Since becoming involved with the WBFL at the start of the season we’ve been impressed by the strength and regional spread of the competition taking in football and netball players, officials and spectators.

We appeal to you and your community of families and friends to take note of our simple message: Would you know what to say if you were asked ‘did they want to be an organ and tissue donor?’ Ask them today. OK?

You can find out more information about our work at www.donatelife.gov.au.

We wish you all the best for the DonateLife Round and for the rest of the season.

Until next time,

Dr Sally Tideman

We had a great day at South, fortunate to be a part of the opening of their Netball Changerooms. They look fantastic and some of the girls enjoyed the hot showers after the games! Both clubs came away with 4 wins. The 12’s started the day with a great win, unfortunately the 15’s and 13’s were beaten but both can still make finals. The 17’s played a great second half to win by 9. The C Grade were narrowly beaten and they have been the big improvers in the second round. The B Grade babes were without Leica and Carol and Zoe Brown stepped up and played at the other end to her Mum showing how it is done in goals. Justine always dreamed of being a goalie and it is great to see Zoe showing her how it is done! The A Res kept their finals chances alive with a hard fought win, the juniors in this side continue to improve each week. The A Grade girls welcomed Kim and Elise back and played their best defensive netball for the season. Tanaya went down with an ankle injury but is sure to bounce back in a couple of weeks.

Today we welcome the Reserves Premiership side from 2002 for their 10 year re-union which begins in the club at half time of the A’s today about 3pm ish. The Imperials players from that day are also invited to attend this function. What a terrific day it was winning the Reserves Premiership for the first time in 50 years defeating Imperials by 13 points and superbly coached by Doug Lang. It was a side that was renowned for its good looks with players like Ian “Hound” Ferguson who has the running style of a 3 legged giraffe with gout. Martin Cameron who had a run up for goal which involved a figure 8 with a double tuck. Backmen, Daniel “Elvis” Scanlon, Jeremy “Dingo” Wenzel and Ben “Zooma” Zalme were so tight and all over their opponents because they thought that they may as well go for human contact during the day as they found it hard to get the same result at night. Tinka, Willy, Rushy, Doddy and Worm relished the ball on the ground and for extra cash doubled as the 5 dwarfs at after hour hen’s nights. So stay around tonight as these legends and more will be presented about 7.30pm tonight and fire up the jukebox.Go Saints

There was four seasons in one day for the game against Casterton. The 12Us had the week off. The 13Us recorded a good win. There was some good driving and passages of play. Award winners were Danielle Vankalken and Hannah Quinn. The 15Us unfortunately did not come away with the points but played extremely well against the second top side, with the game only slipping away at the end. The 17Us had an excellent game against one of the stronger teams in the competition. Basic errors let them down . Better players were Katie Lewis and Elise Haw. C grade had a slow start but stepped up, played well and came away with the win. Best on court went to Julie McKelvie and Emma Callaway. B grade had their closest loss thus far and were actually ahead at half time. It wonderful to see the improvement in this team. The defense duo of Abby Peach and Claire Sparrow received the awards.A Res had another good win against strong opposition. The team converted turnovers well and had great timing and flow down the court. Best on court Steph Franklin.

Saturday the 28th at Casterton turned out to be a satisfying day with the under Eighteens and seniors both having comprehensive victories, while our reserves had a more difficult struggle as they battled their way to a narrow win. Today’s fixture at Millicent presents not only another huge challenge, but, also an opportunity for our teams to strengthen their spot in the five. Senior Awards: Tim Meulendyks (Vestas Leighton) Adrian Linke (Rob Collins Builders) Jarred O’Brien (Hamilton Trophy & Gifts) Jason McIntosh (Sporn Plumbing) Roger Morris (Quinn’s Sportspower) Reserves Awards: Matt Wishart (Vestas Leighton) Mitchell Collins (Lakeside Service Centre) Dean Jenkinson (Fringe Benefits) Phil Schultz (Fox Refrigeration) Leigh Alexander (Hamilton Trophy & Gifts) Jindarra Austin (Hamilton Gymnasium) Congratulations to Ben Taylor who played his 100th club game v Casterton Under Eighteen Awards: Sam Hasell (Bulldog Towel) Ed Purvis (Hamilton First Aide) Jordan Murphy (Rob Collins Builders) Ryan Sigley (Jon Manson Award) Angus Noske (John Uebergang Award) Nick Armstrong (John Waters Award)

These bys are getting frustrating, but after another week off I hope everyone is well rested and pumped for a big day...let’s hope to take out all 8 games today against South. 2 weeks ago the true potential of the A grade side came alive, going down by just 8 goals to the top side Millicent. We did everyone proud, and I can say it’s one of the best games East A grade has ever produced, congratulations everyone for a super strong effort. A res & B grade didn’t get the win they needed to help boost them up the ladder, but I’m sure this week against South we will see some vast improvements. C grade had a slow start but with changes at half time, the goals became easier, and the drive down the court was sensational. East juniors hardly fail to disappoint, and once again all sides played strong in all areas of the court. 3 great wins from the 13’s, 15’s & 17’s. Good luck under 12’s today. I hope you can add another win to your tally. - Bo Richards

3 Wins again for a good day at the footy. U/18’s scraped in by a point.Goals to Pratt 3,Whaites,Markiewicz and Nunan 1 each.Best,Lane,Humphries,Ransom,Walters ,Howard and Pratt. B/grade won by 158 points, goals kicked by Phillips and Thomson 6 each, lots more got the rest.best,Clarke,Nash,White,Beck,Phillips and O’Dine.A’ s by 34 points, goals,Cownie 3,Balshaw 2,Eldridge,Langdon,Fry and Harrap 1 each.Best,Harrap,Cownie,Clark,Lock,Phillips D,Anderson 3 wins a must today to consolidate top 3 for all grades. Well, everything went off without a hitch last weekend as we finally unveiled our clubrooms. It was great to see so many people attend the official opening by Member For Mount Gambier and it was a great opportunity to thank the many people involved in bringin the project to fruition. On the court things didn’t go to plan for most teams but C grade, 13 and under and 15 and under all picked up good wins. Millicent is a traditionally strong 13 and under combination and the girls played a great game to secure the win, while the 15s got the better of Millicent for the second time this season to keep their finals dream alive. Kudos to Olivia Dukalskis for not only filling in and playing a great game for the 15s but athe backing up with another great performance in the 13s. With just one home game to go (August 25) it would be great to see as many netballers as possible coming back to the club for tea and presentations so pop it in your diary.

Di Gould

It was a must win game for South last week against Millicent with positions in the top five on the line for both teams. The day opened with the U18’s looking for payback following their narrow defeat in Round 6. The weather made life difficult for both sides however South made the better of it and were able to run out victors by over 13 goals. The Reserves was a game of 3rd vs 4th. The lead changed several times before half time had South ahead by 3 points. Millicent showed greater resolve to take the lead in the 3rd quarter and hold on to it for a 5 goal win. The Seniors hit hard from the first bounce and built up a 40 point lead at half time. The Saints hit back in the third, coming within 2 goals at the last break. South were able to regroup and fought their way through to a 52 point victory. The win sees South move into 4th place on the ladder just ahead of East who we face this week at the Kennel in a vital game for both teams. East will come into the game refreshed after last week’s bye however South’s record at East will play in our favour.GO DEMONS!

SATURDAY, August 11, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

The Games of the 30th Olympiad in London has been a wonderful extravaganza for the sports fan.

It has, without fail, dished up night after night of unbelievable exploits from local athletes and global superstars.

For those of us slightly obsessed with sports of any kind, who wasn’t on the edge of their seat during the archery or the ping pong; marveled at the strength and flexibility of the gymnasts; the gut busting efforts of the rowers; the grace of the equestrian events; the bravery of the divers; the sheer power of the weightlifters and the chiseled bodies of those on the track and field?

But all that being said, it will be the local footy that we go back to this weekend, and the local footy that we will cheer with the passion that will attest where our hearts truly lie.

And with finals footy and netball now on the line – we cheer and feel the pain ever more keenly than any time during the season.

The Olympics has been a great inspirer for the local athlete – particularly the kids.

All my son wanted to do was to get to Auskick this weekend so he could ‘run as fast as Bolt’ when getting the footy, tackle like a European shot putter, and kick the footy as accurately as Patty Mills when in front of the goals.

Not to the running track did my son see the glories of the Olympics play out in his boyish dreams, but on the football field – taking the mantra of faster, higher, stronger onto the oval.

His mates have been running, jumping, throwing, and wrestling with all their might at school for the last two weeks – complete with the overblown commentary and simulated crowd noises.

The Olympic Games have inspired them to think about sport, and to get active during the cold weeks of winter. This is the great ripple in the pond of the Olympic Games that we will see on football fields in the weeks and years to come.

The other talking point of the Olympics has been the performance of the Australian team, with many in the media telling us that we have shamefully underperformed.

Many of you may have had the same thought as me…how good the Australian Olympic team would be if there was no AFL football to strip the cream of the athletic crop from the ‘fringe’ sports that have a global market and a spot in the Olympics?

How would Barry Hall have gone in the boxing ring with a lifetime of experience and training?

SATURDAY, August 11, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Could Juddy have made it in the 400m? Nic Natinui could surely have made a high jump squad, and Scott Pendlebury made the choice to play footy rather than basketball when he was well on the way to becoming a Boomer.

I could see Andrew Walker and Isaac Smith in the 5km run, Scott Thompson lifting massive weights, Matty Kruezer dominating the net in the volleyball, mad Jake King on the Greco Roman wrestling mat, Matthew Pavlich pulling a canoe through the rapids, and the fleet footed Cyril Rioli wielding the rapier with lightening speed.

I can’t help but to think that the strength of Australian Rules Football has been to the detriment of the Australian Olympic team – we are blessed in our game with the best athletes in Australia.

When the siren goes this weekend we will see our own boys and girls competing in the sports they love; inspired by what they have seen in London, thinking about the effort required to succeed at the top level, and taking their own dreams of gold over the white line onto the field and the court.

All the best.

Congratulations to Georgie Gough who will be playing her 100th club game this week. Our under 12s all teamed well together to have a good win against south. The 13s had a great and well focused game by fighting hard all day to come away with a win by 2. Great game by the u15s, disappointing not to win after leading all game. It was one of the better games they have played for the season. 17s had a very pleasing game in which we were able to be consistent for all four quarters. Winning convincingly. C grade are really playing some good netball at the moment, unfortunately though we didn’t get across the line. A nice win to B grade, can’t make it to finals but we are going to finish the season on a high with the girls really finding form late in the season. A res are really looking good with an excellent win by 23, good defensive pressure forcing south to make many errors. A grade is setting themselves up for finals with improvement each week and a great team effort to win by 8. Congratulations to Leanne Sherren and Sarah Langley gaining their Netball Umpire C Grade Badge

A cold and wet day greeted us as we hosted South Gambier. The Under 18’s got the day off to a great start with a comfortable 53 point win. Multiple goal kickers were Tom Lambevski 4, Sam Beavis and Charles Murrie 3 and Aaron McInnes 2 goals. Better players were, Declan Murphy, Nathan Lewis and Brody Fishwick. The Reserves almost had their first win of the season. Following a poor 1st quarter the boys went in at half time 1 point up. This was followed by another good quarter with the boys 13 up at 3/4 time. A win was looking very likely, however the boys let the lead slip and unfortunately went down by 1 point. Best: Andrew Bunting, Andrew Jehu and Nathan VanHess. The Seniors had a game they would probably like to forget. The final quarter was the only highlight with the boys restricting South to 2 behinds and scoring 27 points themselves. This was too little too late as the damage had been done in the preceding quarters. Best: Sam Horne, Gareth Crawford and Tyrone Ross.

No under 12’s were played this week due to Casterton not entering a team. This week we travell to Hamilton , and hope to come home with some good results. till next time Yours in Netball Rhonda Compton.

Not the best of days for football last Saturday when we hosted Casterton. Whilst the weather was reasonable, our visitors unfortunately had to pull the plug on the Under 18 match. Hopefully they are able to regroup and field a side for the rest of the season. Despite not having a lead-in match, the Reserves were able to control their encounter against Casterton to record a comfortable win. David Kenndy was again the standout performer as he gathered possesions in a prolific manner, whilst others to come under notice were Matthew Herbertson, Andrew Symons, Jake Patterson, Leigh Wiseman and Jordan Cables. The Seniors got a bullet start, then went about their business in a rather pedestrian manner to gain a win that was very welcome but not totally convincing. Daniel Falcone was the star performer, ably supported by Ben Malcolm and Justin Van Heugten. Others worthy of mention were Denis O’Loughlin, Beau Bentley, Sam Fleming whilst those pair of sharpshooters( Holt and Hayse ) both kept the soreboard attendant occupied. This week we jouney north to tackle Hamilton where another round of challenging matches will take place. More wins are necessary.

LANDCAREVICTORIA

What is a catchment?

Geographically a catchment is an area of land that drains to a single low point such as

a gully, creek or river.A large catchment may be made up of a series of smaller sub-catchments and these are

made up of soil, water, air and vegetation. Together theses elements support life and

make up an ecosystem that within it has cycling of nutrients and other elements. Each

component is linked, so when one changes it has an effect on the other elements.

What is Integrated Catchment Management?

Integrated Catchment Management is a coordinated approach to the management of

natural resources. It is the integration of land, water, vegetation and other biological

resources for use in a sustainable, balanced way. ICM draws together all members of

the community to effectively manage the catchment in an integrated and holistic way.

ICM fosters joint action by all sectors of the community in an effort to co-ordinate the

problems and solutions within a catchment.Catchment Strategy – The Glenelg Hopkins CMA. Regional Catchment Strategy will be

built into a catchment management plan. The Murray-Darling Basin Initiative defines ICM as “a process through which people can

develop a vision, agree on shared values and behaviors, make informed decision and

act together to manage the natural resources of their catchment”.

This could be a commitment by the community and agencies of the catchment where

the overall aim could be that while addressing stream flows and stream health, to halt

the increase of salt and silt discharging from Fiery Creek and Salt Creeks and to reduce

overall salinity and silting in Lake Bolac. The adoption of the ICM approach is increasingly regarded as the most effective way

of dealing with environmental issues. ICM takes a ‘whole of systems’ approach and

avoids dealing with issues in isolation. It also recognizes the important role played by the

community in managing natural resources and advantages, such as increased mutual

understanding and effectiveness that results from a genuine partnership between

community and government.

SATURDAY, August 11, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

As the 2012 season draws to a conclusion the results of the remaining 3 rounds will be telling for a number of teams. Hamilton, North Gambier and South Gambier, on equal points, are all battling for a finals berth and will be keen to secure valuable points. Millicent and North Gambier have the byes for this round and North Gambier especially, will be keen to see South and Hamilton suffer defeats to help their finals campaign. However, this season results have been less than predictable and this round will be no exception.

East Gambier host South Gambier at the Bulldogs’ home ground and although a finals position is not possible for East they will be keen to finish their season on a high note. East played an excellent game against league leader Millicent two weeks ago only losing by 8 goals, providing clear evidence of their potential when their full team is available. South will need to play at their very best in order to gain their points. Their last encounter was close with South playing better on the day. The battle between Caroline Davey and Lisa King will be intriguing but a full team effort needs to occur for either team to win. South must win for any progression into the final five.

In a match up over the border Hamilton will meet Portland. Portland have been consistent over the season and deserve their current second position on the ladder. They have height, speed and body to make contests difficult but Hamilton are playing with precision and team control and if they can pursue this style of play then it will be enough to force the contest and test the higher placed Portland. Both teams are capable of highly skilled netball but whether this is what will be allowed to occur and for spectators to enjoy will be another matter. This result will be critical for both teams.

Casterton will play host to third placed West Gambier and although Casterton will not feature in this year’s finals they will play with tenacity and determination to secure those elusive 4 points. Their style of play is good and they have pushed most teams in every encounter so West will not be able to play in cruise mode at all. Both teams have terrific young goalies who have stepped up and been focal points for their teams. West have been playing smart defensive netball using zones effectively and been systematic in the delivery of the ball. They are enjoying good success and playing confidently. Casterton need to be consistent, persistent and play with self- belief. Results will come. This will be a good game to watch for spectators.

SATURDAY, August 11, 2012 ‘THE WESTERN’

Today we congratulate Bronte Grosser on his 300th Club game consisting of 225 As for 242 goals and 75 Reserves and 150 goals. Bronte has come through the junior ranks with the Saints winning the U/16 B&F in 1993 and the U/18 B&F in 1994. His first A grade game was in 1993 at the age of 16 under coach Russell Johnston. Bronte has the silky skills and goal kicking ability that has seen him most effective on the half forward line for many years. In 1999 he won the Senior goal kicking, in 2006 he won the Senior Most Consistent and was made Life Member of the Millicent Football Netball Club. After injuring a knee Gross played reserves and in 2009 was R/U B&F and leading goal kicker in 2010. Moving into the centre in 2011 Bronte won the Reserves B&F and was R/U in the Reserves WBFL medal behind Chris Denton. This year Gross got a call up to the seniors where he showed his class with a BOG against East. Always the dedicated club person along with his wife Kylie and kids Jayden and Tarhni, today we salute Bronte Grosser . Photo courtesy of The Border Watch

Today we travel to Portland and the clashes will be intense. The 15u and 17u will once again be embattled in potentially the matches of the day with both combinations boasting a depth of skill and netball endeavour. Good luck all teams Go Cats! McNamara Player of the Day: Alex Thorpe: Persistence and determination to learn circle defence. Special thanks to Graeme Devereux from Glenelg First Aid for running a great, informative evening on Primary Carer care and taping tips.

The Casterton football Netball Club looks forward to this weeks match against West Gambier after a

disappointing trip to Portland Last week. The trip was always going to prove difficult with a shortage

of numbers for various reasons. However to their credit everyone tried their best and the senior

side had a good last quarter. Young Jake Galpin managed to kick three goals for the match as did

Dylan Ryan. Kane Forbes had a good game as did Daniel Wombwell and Jacob Shannon. Ricky

Killey led the charge of the Killey boys in the Reserves as the battled out the games. Leigh Killey

has shown remarkable improvement and was named alongside Rick and James Killey in the better

players with Jake Smith being best on.

We look forward to this weeks game against West Gambier and wish all the teams the best. So get

behind all teams for the rest of the season.

A mixed day against North, with some pretty tight games. Congratulations to Sophie Roach, who on return after her lengthy break clocked up her 150th game for the club. It is great to see her back on the court, and we look forward to her playing more and more games. We also congratulate Bec and the U12’s girls on an awesome display. Last time we played North they lost by over 40 goals, last week they turned it on and won by 1 in a fantastic team game. Well done to all the girls, with Emmerson and Hannah getting the awards. Georgia and Zoe got the awards for the 13’s, who were up against a very impressive team. In the 15’s Maddy T and Tahlia led the way. 17’s also had a ripper game, winning by 1. Well done to all the girls, with Emily and Ashleigh awarded best. C Grade weren’t able to hang on, North running out winners by 3, best were Belinda and 150 gamer Sophie. B Grade also had a tight game, with Jac and Carlee their best. Stacey and Rachael led the way in the A Res win, and it was Lisa and Carly T leading the way for the A’s. Today we head over to Casterton, so good luck to everyone and travel safe.

Hello All here’s hoping today’s results are a bit better than last weeks. The U18s set the tone for the day losing by 65 Points. Best Players Ben McKay, Dale Robbins, Keanu Hawke, Jesse Hewitt, Daniel (Goal Post) Gardiner, Ben Staskevicious. The less said about the Reserves 183 Point loss the better. Best Players Travis Lockwood, Matt Staskevicious, Brodey Koop, Jeremy Weyers. The Seniors had another competitive first half going in at the break 15 Points down. They couldn’t finish off in the second with the margin drifting out to 61 Points. Best Players Nic Martin, Steve Wenman, James Waugh, Josh Ransom, Tyson Ploenges with 5 Goals. Unfortunately we battle today for the wooden spoon only a win today will ensure we don’t get that trophy for the cabinet. GO THE ROOS. Socs
