June edition. I hope you enjoy reading the content as much as we have producing it. We are an independent privately owned publication with the sole purpose to bring you the absolute best of the Westcountry and The English Riviera. We focus purely on the brighter positive side of life, which I personally feel has been neglected over the years. We won’t be featuring court convictions or over sensationalised negative news,

which impacts on peoples feelings and the local economy. We are a free newspaper covering Torquay, Paignton, Brixham, Newton Abbot and all of Teignbridge, Exeter and South Devon.

My aim is to make people feel better and more positive about life after reading my paper, not the opposite. Can this be done, but of course, you’re reading it now. We are very pro-family and will be featuring special offers for family attractions and many money saving offers.

David Cameron: “This is a great day for the hard-working people of Dawlish, and for businesses and commuters across the South West”.

After 8 weeks of repairs, the train line at Dawlish - connecting the South West to the rest of the country - reopened in time for the Easter holidays.

The line was damaged during the winter storms earlier in the year. As a result, a raft of measures were put in place to help people continue to travel including buses to provide alternative transport, discounted fares and additional flights out of Newquay.

The Prime Minister was present as the line reopened. He said:

“This is a great day for the hard-working people of Dawlish, and for businesses and commuters across the South West whose lives have been turned upside down by the devastating loss of their train line. Back in February when I visited the town to see the damage for myself, I promised to do everything I could to get this vital artery back up and running as quickly as possible. I am delighted to say that promise has been delivered today. A promise which says that the South West is well and truly open for business.

“The impact of the extreme weather shows the importance of making our railways strong enough to weather any storm. That is why we announced a £31 million package of improvements and asked Network Rail to examine every option to ensure the resilience

of this route, all part of our long-term economic plan to boost business and create more jobs in the region.”

Mark Carne, chief executive of Network Rail, said: “Our army of engineers have done an amazing job of putting back together a railway that was ravaged by the elements. They have overcome every obstacle thrown at them, winning many battles along the way to restore this critical piece of the network, ahead of schedule, and in time for the Easter holidays.

“The biggest thanks must be reserved for passengers and local communities and businesses who have been hugely supportive and patient over the past 2 months as we worked flat-out to rebuild this vital rail link.

Our focus now moves to the medium and long-term looking at what can be done at Dawlish to make the current coastal route more resilient and, by the autumn, understand what the best viable relief route might be.”

The first two winners of the prestigious Best Destination in the UK accolade were London and Edinburgh with Torquay in third place as the leading seaside resort and one of only two non-city locations in the top ten.

TripAdvisor said, ‘In a list dominated by larger cities, Torquay’s strong showing particularly stands out – placing it higher than any other seaside destination in the UK and one of only two towns to make the top ten (the other being Llandudno).’

Carolyn Custerson, Chief Executive of the English Riviera Tourism Company (ERTC) said, “ The positive publicity generated by the annual TripAdvisor awards is huge and definitely something that money can’t buy. I’d like to give my warm thanks and congratulations to all those tourism businesses that have upped their game to bring this remarkable achievement to the English Riviera. Timing couldn’t be better to help ensure another successful season.’

James Kay, TripAdvisor spokesperson, commented, “These awards are based on millions of reviews and ratings by those that really matter - travellers themselves. Torquay’s strong

showing, the highest of any town in the UK, is testament to the unquestionable appeal of this seaside destination.”

Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews and ratings for hotels, attractions and restaurants in destinations worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

So why did so many travellers actively take time out to write warmly positive reviews about Torquay? Firstly, Torquay has a huge variety of accommodation and offers get great value and a warm welcome for the whole family at all budgets.

Torquay’s natural beauty is also exceptional with the whole resort a UNESCO-recognised Global Geopark. These delights have not gone unnoticed by international visitors with 17% of Torquay’s staying visitors now coming from abroad. The resort’s links with world-famous Agatha Christie

TORqUAy TOP SEASIDE RESORT IN THE UKTorquay has been voted top seaside resort in the UK in the Travellers’ Choice Awards, announced by TripAdvisor, the world’s largest travel site.

News from the Mayors OfficeGordon Oliver and his team have been chosen by voters in Torbay to lead Torbay. Gordon was born educated and trained in Torbay, his whole career being in local business mostly running a property management and estate agency business. He has been actively involved in local business and voluntary organisations throughout his life and has a passionate interest in the history of Torbay.

For many years Gordon represented Torbay on Devon County Council gaining a wealth of valuable Local Government experience in senior Council appointments.

Torbay Council Welcomes Red Arrows return to Torbay.

The Red Arrows have confirmed they are returning to Torbay with their spectacular air show on 24th August at 7pm.

Torbay Council’s Residents and Visitor Services Team has been working alongside partners across the Bay to secure the arrows for a date this summer, to be a highlight of its annual events programme which this year features D Day 70th anniversary celebrations and a prestigious contemporary arts festival, Doorstep Arts.

Mayor of Torbay Gordon Oliver said: “I am delighted that the Red Arrows are returning to Torbay during the Torquay Regatta Week, and that the announcement coincided with Torquay being voted top seaside resort in the Tripadvisor Awards. We will give them a warm Torbay welcome on 24th August when there will be thousands of extra visitors enjoying their holidays at the height of the season, as well as the local people of Torbay that look forward to the Red Arrows’ stunning air display against the backdrop of the English Riviera coastline every year.”

The confirmation letter from the Ministry of Defence was received by Torbay MP Adrian Sanders in response to a request to review the decision sent back in February to the Minister responsible for the Armed Forces. .

The luxury resort and flats development, costing in the region of £90million, is likely to be one of the biggest tourism regeneration project in Torbay for many years. The ambitious development is aligned to Torbay Council’s and Torbay Development Agency’s (TDA) strategy to create a world-class destination for tourism and business by attracting quality schemes that enhance the natural environment and heritage features of the English Riviera.

Planning permission was granted in March with unanimous approval from Torbay Council’s Development Management Committee, and the developer, Mapstone Developments Ltd, is working with Torbay Council and the TDA to help deliver the luxury new hotel in tandem with apartments on the site of the existing Palace Hotel.

The proposal includes four blocks of flats in a gated, concierge-serviced community linked to the hotel, which will finance a £20million staged redevelopment of the hotel, turning it into a luxury resort which will eventually stretch down

through the 28-acre gardens towards Ansteys Cove to create the Westcountry’s leading high end hotel destination facility and resort.

The 137 apartments will be a mix of flats and duplex units (2, 3 and 4 bedroomed) with 270 car parking spaces and private spa and leisure facilities.

The development will enable the reopening of Redgate Beach, after it being closed off for 15 years following subsidence, and much needed improvements to the South West Coast Path.

The Palace Hotel itself will be extended with new luxury spas, restaurants and swimming pools. The redevelopment of the hotel will increase the accommodation to 160-bedrooms with an extra penthouse storey.

The number of jobs on the complex is to increase from 80 to 130 and visitor spend from £1.3m to an estimated £4.5 million in 2019.

Wildlife and landscaping in surrounding protected areas will be safeguarded. The plans to improve the section of the south west coast path in the adjacent area of the new complex would

further enhance the visitor offer in Torbay to a wider sector of tourism markets.

Work could start on site as early as this summer.

Torbay Mayor Gordon Oliver said: “This very exciting development is just what we need to boost our journey towards economic regeneration with quality tourism as a key target sector.

“Clearly we are getting the message across that Torbay is an excellent destination to visit and invest in, which has reaped rewards in attracting this £90million project from Mapstone who have a track record in delivering prestigious developments that enhance the appeal of the wider area.

“I look forward to working with Mapstone to develop this prime site into a luxury resort with quality housing - making the most of this unique location on the English Riviera.”

Developer Jack Turton, of Mapstone Hotel and Resorts Ltd said: “The redevelopment of the Palace Hotel represents a significant opportunity for the

people of Torquay and the surrounding area.

“We plan to make this the leading hotel and resort destination in the South West – with a level of quality and finish that will elevate the property to premier league status and attract valued foreign and homeland tourists.”

The Palace Hotel’s managing director, Paul Uphill said: “This is a new phase for the Palace Hotel to respond the changing needs of the tourism market.

“The aim is to build on the Palace’s popularity and branch out into new markets. Mapstone will take this grand building into the 21st Century with a complete revamp, whilst retaining its original splendour, which is steeped in architectural features and was once the palace of the Bishop of Exeter.

“I have enjoyed managing the Palace Hotel for the last 40 years and look forward to see it being given a new lease of life.”

The Miss England competition is the most respected beauty title in England. It is the only competition in the country to send its winner to represent England in the Miss World Beauty Pageant. For the second year, the final of Miss England is returning to Torbay with 60 regional beauty queens participating in the 3 day finals. The host hotel for the event is the Puma Imperial Hotel Torquay where all the girl will have the pleasure of staying for the event.

The organisers are noted for emphasising the importance of charity work which is now an integral part of the competition at both regional heat level and the national finals. During the last three years, the Miss England competition has raised in excess of £550,000 for various children’s charities using the Miss World’s ‘Beauty with a Purpose’ slogan founded by Julia Morley, now a charity that aims to help disadvantaged children across the world. “Angie Beasley” a former model and beauty queen who has organised hundreds of regional and national competitions on behalf of Miss

The Spanish Barn, adjacent to the house, is so named because it housed 397 prisoners from the Spanish Armada. The Barn is currently used for functions, such as weddings, and exhibitions.

Torre Abbey Historic House and Gardens Re-Opens

The Cary family had previously lived here in style, from 1840 they fell on hard times and could no longer keep the Abbey in good repair. In 1930 the family sold the property to the local Council, who turned it into an art gallery with a hospitality suite for the mayor in the south-east wing.

Stress is now the number one reason behind sickness from work - overtaking the common cold as the biggest cause of absence, a report says.

One third of employers are now providing stress counselling for employees because they are increasingly worried about the impact the problem will have on their business.

A report by business information group Gee Publishing says that one in five companies with more than 1,000 staff consider stress to be a “major problem”.

We recently caught up with the new General Manager Paul Howard to find out a bit more about himself and the BIDS!

JS What is your background?PH I was born in Belgium as

my father was serving in the Armed Forces at the time. At a very young age, my dad left the army and we moved to Burnley in Lancashire where I grew up. After leaving school I joined a clerical training scheme with Michelin who had a manufacturing facility in the area at the time. After completing my training I held various administration roles in and around the area and dabbled with sales before pursuing a career in financial services. In 1996 I joined a local Independent Financial Adviser where I stayed for the next 5 years, training and working my way up the career ladder. Unfortunately, I was made redundant from this company due to a restructure but was encouraged by the Managing Director to apply for another position with a local company much like the Torbay Town Centres Company called Initiative Burnley, of which he was Chairman at the time. Initiative Burnley was the umbrella organisation that housed the Burnley Town Centre Management scheme at the time and the rest is history. I started working for Initiative Burnley and Burnley Town Centre Management on the

events and marketing side, having a great time organising hot air balloon festivals and Christmas Switch On’s before an opportunity came up with one of the projects managed by Initiative Burnley called Padiham Life. Padiham is a small town within the Burnley borough and had recently been granted a substantial sum of money from the North West Development Agency to kickstart a number of regeneration projects within the area. My specific role was to deliver town centre initiatives such as shop front improvement grants and providing direct marketing support to independent retailers. Many of the projects I started are still in operation many years later and have now been taken on by a voluntary group of traders. As much as I enjoyed my work in Padiham, this was a set term contract and was coming to an end so I started to look for opportunities across the country when I saw the position of Town Centre Manager in the Midlands. I relocated to Burton on Trent in 2007 and remained there until the end of 2013 when I relocated to Torbay where I now live in Livermead with my wife and two children.

JS What are the economical benefits for businesses within the bid programme?

of developing a Business Improvement District, the business community is asked to highlight what it sees as the priorities for the area in which they operate, whether that is cleaner streets or community safety. We generally see common themes develop around BID’s and these are usually centred around cleaner, greener and better promoted centres with many opting to enhance the number of events. The businesses vote on the resulting business plan with a successful ballot resulting in a supplementary levy to provide the finances to deliver this plan over a specified term. Shopping centres and retail parks charge what is known as a service charge to provide all the services you see within these areas such as cleaning and security so a Business Improvement District is really about emulating the success of these areas using a contribution from all and giving them a say in how it is spent.

JS Any goals or ambitions you have with this current project?

PH As I’m new to the area, I am keen to make sure we deliver what we are supposed to be in the

business plan, and that we do this in an open and transparent manner. I have already made a number of changes to how we process information internally which will make it much easier for us to answer questions and share details. My ultimate aim of course is to secure a renewal ballot in 2015.

JS As you are relatively new what would you like the businesses to know about you personally?

PH If anyone would like to meet up for a coffee and a chat, please get in touch. We’re all in this together and the only way we gain a competitive advantage is by working together. Increased visitors to the town means more money going into the tills which, when you strip everything else away is exactly why we are here. Creating a pleasurable experience for visitors to the town centre is my number one priority.

The Red Arrows

Team HistoryThe 1950s and 1960s were the heyday of Royal Air Force jet aerobatic display teams. By the mid-60s almost every Flying Training School, and several operational squadrons, had their own teams. So much time, effort and money was being expended on these non-established tasks that the Royal Air Force eventually decided to disband them all and form a single, full-time professional team. Thus, in 1964, the Red Pelicans flying six Jet Provost T Mk 4s became the first team to represent the Royal Air Force as a whole. In that same year a team of five yellow Folland Gnat jet trainers, known as the Yellowjacks, was formed at No 4 Flying Training School at Royal Air Force Valley in north Wales, led by Flight Lieutenant Lee Jones. The following year Jones was posted to the Central Flying School (CFS) to form the Red Arrows. The Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team (RAFAT), the formal name of the Red Arrows, began life at RAF Fairford in Glouces tershire, then a satellite of CFS. Initially there were seven display pilots and ten Gnat jet trainers. The name ‘Red Arrows’ was chosen to combine the appeal and expertise of two earlier teams, the famous Black Arrows and the Red Pelicans.

Red Arrows’ first display season!In their first season, 1965, the Red Arrows flew 65 displays in Britain, France, Italy, Holland, Belgium and Germany, and the Team was awarded the Britannia Trophy by the Royal Aero Club in recognition of its outstanding contribution to British prestige in the field of aviation. When the Royal Air Force decided to retain the Team for 1966, two spare pilots were established but the Team continued to fly just seven aircraft in most displays. The first display with 9 pilots was in July 1966 for the benefit of HRH The Duke of Edinburgh. The practice of carrying spare pilots proved unsatisfactory because the display was so specialised that each position had its own demands. To be of any use at all, the spare pilots had to be capable of filling any position at very short notice.

Thus, they required more training

than any other member of the team and, as a result, became more skilled.

Not surprisingly

the spares became

dissatisfied with their roles as

reserves.

Diamond 9The Red Arrows flew nine aircraft in displays from time to time from mid-1966 onwards, but it was not until 1968 that the Team was officially increased in size to nine. Although there was nothing new in flying nine aircraft in a diamond-shaped formation, the Red Arrows’ perfectly symmetrical Diamond Nine quickly came to represent the peak of precision flying and it was eventually registered as an official trade mark.

The Hawk arrives...The Red Arrows took delivery of the British Aerospace Hawk trainer in the autumn of 1979 and during that winter the pilots converted from the Gnat and worked up a display using the new aeroplane in time for the 1980 display season. Since being introduced into service with the Red Arrows, the Hawk has taken the Team on tours of eastern and western Europe, the USA and Canada, the Middle and Far East, Africa, the former Soviet Union and Australia. The 4000th display flown in the Hawk was at Royal Air Force Leuchars’ Battle of Britain Airshow in September 2006.

Since the Team’s creation in 1965, the Red Arrows have flown over 4,000 displays in 52 countries. Today the Red Arrows are renowned throughout the world, acting as ambassadors for Great

Britain when displaying overseas. They also support UK industry by demonstrating the capabilities of British equipment and expertise.

The Red Arrows have confirmed they are returning to Torbay with their spectacular air show on 24 August at 7pm.

Living Coasts penguins

march around Torquay harbour

Penguins are popping up all around Torquay harbour. The cheeky six inch characters have been spotted in an assortment of shops and businesses.

Mini plaster of Paris penguins have been decorated in a range of dazzling designs by staff and volunteers at Torquay’s coastal zoo and put on show in shop windows around the inner harbour, forming a fun trail to follow.

The trail runs from May half term to September. Hayley Gibson, from Living Coasts, explained: “Living Coasts is the home of the penguin, so it’s fitting for our trail to feature this fabulous little bird. Pick up a trail sheet from Living Coasts or any of the businesses taking part. Look for the posters displayed with the penguins. Each poster has a letter on it. When you have all the letters, make a relevant phrase and hand your answer in at Living Coasts. When the trail ends in September we’ll select a winner – the prize is a Living Coasts penguin feeding experience.”

The trail echoes the successful Great Gorilla Trail run by Living Coasts’ sister zoo Paignton Zoo last year. “The penguins have really brought out the artistic skills of our team! We hope people will come down to the harbour, have fun following the trail and enjoy the wide range of shops and businesses found here.”At Living Coasts you can mingle with the free range penguins and watch them both on the beach and in the water. Torquay’s coastal zoo is also home to seals, wading birds, exotic fish, seahorses, auks and more. Visitors can book to feed the penguins and those with the right qualifications can scuba dive with the penguins.

insects!Get ready for insects galore at Paignton Zoo over May half term. Insect Week, which runs from Saturday 24th May to Friday 30th May, marks the opening of Investigate, the Zoo’s fantastic new hi-tech invertebrate exhibit.

On Saturday 24th and Sunday 25th May you’ll be able to meet a variety of visiting invert experts and discover more about insects, plants and biodiversity. On Monday 26th May there will be an edible bugs challenge, while on Tuesday 27th you’ll be able to venture onto the Zoo’s leafy Nature Trail and take part in pond-dipping to discover which creatures lie beneath the water.

Wednesday 28th May sees the official opening of Investigate. What have invertebrates ever done for us? Well, as it turns out, they’ve done lots, inspiring inventions and innovations in everything from engineering and design to medicine and computing. Be among the first to experience this radical new exhibit and then grab your chance to create your own graffiti art.

If you are not so keen on insects, there’s plenty of other things to see at Paignton Zoo, from baby orang utans and young giraffes to tigers lurking in the dappled shade of the forest and gorillas watching you from their island home. Please check the website www.paigntonzoo.org.uk for details.

The final of Miss Devon was held on Easter Saturday at the Imperial Hotel Torquay.

The event, which was organized by Linda Hill of the Torbay Tourism Association in association with Sandstorm Luxury, was a roaring success after an audience of 300 guests packed the Torbay Suite of the Imperial.

18 Devon Beauties participated in the final, which included; Charity, Eco, Sports, Beach Beauty, Talent, Evening wear and Interview rounds. And, to mark the Easter occasion all of the contestants participated in an Easter bonnet parade which the

girls had made themselves from recycled materials.

In the lead up to the final the contestants were given the difficult task of raising funds for various charities to prove they are Beauties with a Purpose and they organized their own charity events around the county. In excess of £5,000 was raised by them for various charities.

There was success on the evening of the competition for three local Torquinian girls, namely; Harriet Shapter who was 1st runner up. Harriet also won a special award from local business Genting Casino, Abbey Heywood who won the Miss Popularity award sponsored by Anderton and Rowland, Fredi Wright who won the award for Miss Torbay Tourism, also Caitlin Milligan who

won the Sportswoman award and Emma Lea Thorpe who won Top Model award.

All five girls’ journeys are still ongoing as they have qualified to go onto the Miss England semi finals which are being held on 19th May at Kelham Hall, Newark.

The winner of Miss Devon 2014 is Hayley Wood aged 21. Hayley is a psychology student and she told the judges how she bathed in a bath of beans and raised over £1,000 for her chosen charity. Hayley was also voted as the Sandstorm Beach Beauty winner following the Beach Beauty shoot held several weeks earlier.

The judges found it difficult to choose an overall winner and decided to award a new title called “Miss English Riviera” to

Leanne Ward (24) from Torpoint who was the top fundraiser in the contest. Leanne completed the London Marathon last week and raised over £2,000 for the Lady Taverna’s charity.

Now both young ladies will go forward to the Miss England grand final which is being held in Torquay at the Riviera International Conference centre Torquay on the 16th June. The winner of the final will win a prize package worth £25,000 including a luxury holiday to Mauritius and the opportunity to represent England in Miss World which has a top prize of £100,000.

Getting kids into nature starts at home A lack of safe and family-friendly green spaces, too much traffic and stranger danger are stopping parents letting their children play outdoors.

Fresh Look At Lunchboxes School dinners have had a radical overhaul thanks to the efforts of Jamie Oliver; but what about the lunchboxes we pack for our children?

Excessive health and safety rules, the rise in popularity of computer games and indoor entertainment, and demanding school days are also to blame for barring children from connecting with nature.

And the research by the National Trust warns that parents need more support to make the outdoors a part of everyday family life to avoid rearing a generation completely cut off from the natural world.

The Natural Childhood Inquiry - which sought submissions from experts and the public on the barriers and the solutions for children’s connection with nature - found that children’s love of nature is best started in the home.

The inquiry follows a report for the Trust by award-winning nature author and wildlife TV producer Stephen Moss which documented children’s declining connection with the outdoors and nature. Respondents said parents need more access to

family-friendly, green and natural spaces, as well as more opportunities for children to enjoy the great outdoors.

However the inquiry recognises that there were some big barriers to a building a closer relationship with nature.

These include excessive health and safety rules, the rise of indoor entertainment competing for children’s time and attention, traffic dangers, over-stuffed school days, and the poor quality and accessibility of green and natural spaces in many communities.

Research with children and parents commissioned by the Trust to accompany the publication of the inquiry findings strongly validates these conclusions. A YouGov survey of more than 419 UK parents of under-13s revealed that a range

of parental fears and concerns could be preventing children from getting the most out of nature. Stranger danger (37%), lack of safe nearby outdoor places to play (25%) and too much traffic (21%) were the top ranked barriers amongst parents of children aged 12 or under. Just short of half of parents of pre-teens identified more local safe places to play as the single thing which would most encourage them to let their children get outdoors and explore more where they lived.

The other two top solutions supported by parents were more supervised play spaces and increasing activities organised by schools or youth groups.

Trust Director General Fiona Reynolds said: “It is clear from the huge public response that our Natural Childhood report

struck a chord with the nation. Parents want their children to have a better connection with nature but they don’t feel completely confident in how to make that happen in a safe and stimulating way.

“Our inquiry showed that there is widespread agreement that this is an important issue and that now is the time to act. The worlds of conservation, government, education and child welfare need to work together with families and communities to find solutions.”

As part of its response to the lack of connection between kids and nature the National Trust launched its 50 Things to do before you’re 11 3/4 campaign in May. More than 250 Trust places took part, and in the first two months more than 200,000 activity scrap- books given away and nearly 20,000 users registered on the 50 Things website.

A study by the School Food Trust has revealed that over 40% of packed lunches don’t contain a single piece of fruit or vegetable that could count towards children’s five-a-day.

It’s just as important to make sure the lunches children take to school provide a healthy, balanced meal - and that means plenty of foods that contain the nutrients children need, and fewer that are high in sugar and saturated fat.

Starchy foods are a good source of energy, and should make up a third of the lunchbox. But don’t let things get boring.

Instead of sandwiches give kids bagels, pitta bread, wraps and baguettes. Use brown, wholemeal or seeded bread, not white bread.

Children often like food they can eat with their fingers, so chop up raw veggies such as carrots or peppers, and give them houmous or cottage cheese to dip the veggies in.

Breadsticks and wholemeal crackers are great finger foods and they can be spread with low-fat soft cheese or eaten with reduced-fat cheddar and pickles.

Replace chocolate bars and cakes with fresh fruit, dried fruit or unsalted nuts. Vary the fruit each day and get them to try

new things, like kiwi or melon. You could also make up a tasty fruit salad. Be inventive and encourage your children when they try something new.

A balanced packed lunch should contain:

Starchy foods - bread, rice, potatoes and pasta, and others. Protein foods - meat, fish, eggs, beans and others. A dairy item - cheese or yoghurt. Vegetables or salad, and a portion of fruit. It may take a while for your children to get used to a healthier lunchbox but it will be worth it for their health, so keep trying. You can help by eating a wider range of foods at home, as a family. Reading supermarket food labels can help you to buy healthier foods. Chocolate and cakes can be saved for occasional treats - praise is a better reward

for your child when they’ve tried something new. To get started, here are a few ideas for lunches for five to eight-year-olds: Monday - Banana sandwich on wholemeal, a tomato, boiled egg, low-fat fruit yogurt, box of raisins and semi-skimmed milk. Tuesday - Melon and satsuma kebabs, soy milk, banana and strawberry smoothie, salmon and rice salad, with peas, sweetcorn and spring onion. Wednesday - Three oatcakes with Red Leicester cheese, chutney, reduced-salt ham, cherry tomatoes, carrot & cucumber sticks, fruit in jelly, dried apricots and semi-skimmed milk. Thursday - Tomato, mozzarella and pastrami ciabatta pizza, carrot sticks, kiwi and strawberry fruit salad, reduced- fat strawberry fromage frais and a bottle of water.

Friday - Chicken and

couscous salad with spring onion, red pepper and cherry tomatoes, a pear and banana milk. Nine to 12-year-olds will enjoy these: Monday - Spanish omelette made with eggs, potato and pork sausage, green salad, Satsuma, teacake and flavoured milk. Tuesday - Falafel and salad pitta, houmous, peaches in fruit juice, reduced-fat natural yogurt and apple juice. Wednesday - Tuna pasta salad with spring onion, green pepper and cherry tomatoes, fresh fruit salad with low-fat fromage frais, slice of banana cake and a bottle of water. Thursday - Double-decker reduced salt ham salad sandwich, mini blueberry muffin, mixed dried fruit, a kiwi fruit and a bottle of water. Friday - Mexican chicken wrap, carrot sticks and baby corn, mixed fruit salad, malt loaf and a yogurt drink.
