News reports If you are in a race please let our reporter know beforehand.

The deadline for submitting the news report to the local paper is

Monday morning so please keep our news reporter updated with your latest race news so you are not missed from the

results. Email Pacers News [email protected] 3/2/14 This weekend saw the start of the YVAA league with a very

muddy home race at Pudsey. The men started where they finished last year, leading the first 4 to count table and the All to Count table. The women finished 4th place in the tables. On a sunny Sunday morning a total of 30 pacers took to the valley for the first race. First four men home (all finishing in the top 10) were Gary Bailey 31:29 (2nd M35), Nigel Armitage 32:15 (2nd M40), Paul Gaile 33:34 (1st M45) and Leigh Hinchcliffe 34:36. Following on

were Graeme Tiffany 37:14, Sam Cook 37:17, Richard Gibson 37:38, Dave Burdon 38:42, Andy Barrett 38:53, Rich Allen 39:27, Vincent Bussingham 39:48, Tony Mawson 40:29, Rob Dixon 40:59, David Kirk 41:13, Mark Smith 42:06, Mark Pawson 42:43, Tim Barton 44:48, Chris Smith 44:57, Andrew Byrom 46:35, Dave Byrom 49:56, Steve Ellis 54:18 and Phil Bruce 60:28.

For the women were Karen Pickles 36:49 in 2nd place overall and 2nd M40, Sue Ransome 47:54

(3rd F55), Lynn Barrett 49:53, Hilary Taylor 52:57 and Nicky Anness 53:03. Running as guests were those fortunate enough not to have reached 35 years yet(!) were Sara Barton 43:15, Lewis Moss 45:31 and Claire Moss 45:47. Looking at those times they will count well for the club when they reach the landmark

age! Full results can be viewed on www.yvaa.org. Opting for a cleaner race (involving no mud), a handful of members headed to the fast and flat Dewsbury 10k road race. First home was James Clark 36:18, followed by Dave Butler 42:26, Martin Booth 44:23, Karen Ratcliffe 48:09, John Woodhead 54:28, Helen Davies 55:56, Caroline Tobin 55:59 (congrats to Caroline on her first 10k!) and Carol Parkinson 59:28 10/2/14 This week on the fells (Saturday 8 February) Sharon Hague, Steve Boom and Graeme Tiffany took part in the Wadsworth Trog. Infamously known as the Beast. Steve Boom reports "it certainly lived up to the billing with the recent storms 'enhancing' the bogs. The organisers where understandably nervous about the weather and had various contingencies in place. Apart from 10 miles of bog ridden moorland and a ferocious headwind, the 21mile/4000ft race passed off without incident although the 15 DNFs out of a field of 173 gives an indication of the nature of the race. An enjoyable 4ish hours spent wading through knee deep bogs which exercised every single tendon and muscle in my legs. Sharon was disappointed and said it could have been boggier, windier and a tougher hill to finish!!" Steve finished in 4:26:41, Graeme in 4:34:41 and Sharon (running with sister Leanne) in 4:50:11. On Sunday braving the wind and rain in the hilly Liversedge Half Marathon were James Clark 1:24:43, Michael Hern 1:34:35, Dave Woodhead 1 :37:15, Dave Butler 1:40:09, Dave Hudson 1:41:45, Lisa Heath 1:53:03, David Nunn 1:54:58, Roy Bamford 1:58:17 and Sara Demaine 2:07:01. In Ripon donning muddy boots for the aptly named Muddy Boots 10k were the ever improving Tony Mawson 50:10 followed by Mark Smith 50:40 and Andrew Byrom 53:47. Braving the elements on Saturday night (8th Feb) Andy Norman and Sarah Booth ran the Hardmoors night run. Sarah reports. “It was very wet and blustery before we started but turned into a lovely evening. However there were times when I thought I'd be blown off Roseberry Topping but made it down the slippery steps and over and up to Captain Cooks memorial. A little too much road then got us to a track to take us to High Cliff Nab above

Guisborough and back to head up and over Roseberry Topping again. 10.5 miles, just under 3,000 feet of climb. 2.38.35, joint 23rd and I was 3rd lady. Very nice evening out!" Results finally in from Rombalds Stride on 1 February 2014 were Adam Graves 3.18.44 ( a well deserved top 20 place), Dave Cooper 3.36.1 2 (top 50 position), Mark Nolan 3.52.51, Stephen Pattinson 4.05.56, Sharon Hague 4.22.46, Jenny Cooper 4.25.11, Shaun Denham 4.27.03, Simon Beverley 4.27.03, Caroline Clarke 4.50.07, Arthur Wood 5.57.32 and finally Tim Ayres 8.46.04 (walker). 24/2/14 Sunday 16 February saw two of our members competing in the Saltaire Shaker Ice Age 15k race. Rhea Sutcliffe completed the race in 1:20:10 and Andrew Smithurst in 1:26:24.

At the Huddersfield 10k on 23 February Jonathan Smithurst ran in 48:13 and Anne Gowing in 67:02. The popular Snake Lane 10 mile flat fast road race took place this weekend in windy conditions. Jon Prideaux finished in 1:07:25, Mark Smith 1:17:38, Andrew Byrom 1:21:48, and Nicola Bradford in 1:28:03. Over on the west coast in equally windy conditions running in the Great North West Half Marathon were Sandra Foster 1:36:42 (PB by 3 minutes), Morven Wallace 1:37:31, Sue Ransome 1:42:47 (2nd F50), John Woodhead 2:11:39, Melissa Stead 2:15:46, Ralph McDermott 2:21:39 and Carol Parkinson 2:23:23. Overseas news from Pacers roving racer Andrew Smithurst, completing the Torrevieja Half Marathon (as part of his London marathon training strategy) in 1:58 (provisional result). Neil Wallace was the sole pacer at the High Cup Nick fell race at Dufton, East Cumbria (9.3m/ 1500ft). Neil completed the race in 1:42. (provisional result).

And finally the biggest news of the week Sarah Booth has reached her target 100th marathon In good weather conditions Sarah completed the Osmotherley Trail Marathon 28.9

miles/4000ft climb in 5:46:54 with partner Andy Norman in 5:46:58 to gain membership of the 100 marathon club! Sarah reports “Thank you to everyone who supported me to get to my 100th marathon on Sunday 16th of February, especially my Andy. I was so excited and amazed to have made it. A big thank you to Jon Steele and Shirley for a wonderful race with perfect conditions especially the wall to wall blue skies. It was great to see a new bit of the North

Page 5: West Yorkshire Cross Country Winter League · 4:43:58, Mark Nolan 5:11:11 and Paul Kaye in 7:12:10. 3/3/14 On Saturday 1 March a number of pacers headed into the Yorkshire Dales near

York Moors that we've not run on before. The race started at Osmotherley and headed out of town a different way to the Cleveland Way. We then headed out on well marked trails before the familiar hills that we've nicknamed the killer 5 sisters of Steele in the 2nd half. We thought we were on for a good time until we remembered we had those to go over. Being sure footed down the steps of each hillside and confident to run through mud meant we overtook a few runners that would normally have finished well before us. It was wonderful to see so many Pudsey Pacers there too, especially well so far ahead of us. The food spread at the end made it all worthwhile. We were very pleased with our time after the last few Hardmoor marathons. Roll on the journey to 200!!” The other Pacers who were present to share Sarah’s momentous occasion were James Clark 4:43:58, Mark Nolan 5:11:11 and Paul Kaye in 7:12:10. 3/3/14 On Saturday 1 March a number of pacers headed into the Yorkshire Dales near Grassington to take part in the Trollers Trot. The route took them via Threshfield Moor, Winterburn Reservoir, Rylestone Moor, Barden Tower, Trollers Ghyll and returning to Threshfield via Burnsall and along the banks of the river Wharfe. It's a challenging course with 3064ft of ascent. Finishing in a top 20 position was Steve Boom in 3:42:22, Luke McQuade 4:00:55, Mark Nolan 4:07:05, Steve Pattison 4:25:50, Shaun Denham 4:29:29, Simon Beverley 4:29:36, Jenny Cooper 4:37:13 (PB) and Dave Cooper 4:37:14. The big event of the weekend on Sunday 2 March was the last cross country race of the season in the West Yorkshire Winter League. Hosted by Stainland Lions, the course provided a very challenging finish to the series. A good turn out on the day meant that we retained 2nd place in the Men’s competition, 2nd place for the Women meaning an overall team result of 2nd place for the season. The Vets team took 1st place this year. Provisional results are out on www.wymedia.co.uk. Confirmation of individual trophies are awaited and will be announced soon. Well done to all who have taken part in the league on behalf of the club this year. Roll on next year! “Racing” on the track at Silverstone this weekend a small band of pacers lined up on the start line. Clearly making no pit stops on the laps were Beth Bray 1:34:31, Andrew Hardaker 1:34:31, Morven Wallace 1:35:04, and Mark Thrush 1:40:56. Finally news from abroad, Joy Good and David Elliot were Down Under and took part in the very hot Albert Park Run in Melbourne on 15 February. David completed it in 27.47 and Joy in 29.27. 10/3/14 Top news comes from the East Hull 20, where Adam Graves finished in an excellent 15th place with a blistering time of 2:05:52 (looking good for Manchester Marathon in 4 weeks time), followed by Michael Hern in 2:27:16 (a PB by more than 2 and a half minutes). In the hilly Spen 20 in warm spring sunshine our man at the top was Paul Gaille, finishing 1stV45 in 2:13:49, followed by Mark Dixson 2:57:18, Lisa Heath 3:02:03, Jenny Cooper 3:14:26 and Sara Demaine 3:29:36. Well done to all our 20 milers this weekend! On the fells on 23rd February Graeme Tiffany took part in the New Chew orienteering-style fell race over on Saddleworth moor. Graeme finished in 5th place in 4hrs 23 mins and was 1st V50. The Prize: a pork pie (such is fell running!).

On 2nd March Graeme ran Ilkley Moor fell race, 8km 401m climb in 49: 39 He finished in 54th place overall and was 2nd V50. On Saturday 8th March Melissa Stead was the sole pacer taking part in the Dentdale Run. Now in its 30th year, the 14.2 mile figure of 8 course, literally goes up and down the dale (and some hills), out one side of Dent and back in the other. Melissa completed the race in 2:33:24. 19/3/14 On Sunday 16 March, in blustery conditions, a contingent of pacers took part in the local Bradford 10k. First home for the club was Adam Graves in 36:08, followed by Simon Coughlan 43:03, Chris Harris 44:03, Rhea Sutcliffe 46:00, Karen Ratcliffe 46:56, William Overton 47:21, Steven Lafferty 48:19, Andrew Smithurst 50:49, Sally Raby 56:01, Rodney Tordoff 56:33 (2nd O70), Ralph McDermott 57:03 (PB), Kathryn Jackson 59:33 (PB), Jude Richards 67:09 (PB) and Becky Cumberworth 69:01 (PB). Very well done to all those who ran and in particular those that managed to achieve PB’s in such conditions! Opting for a longer run Dave Burdon headed for the seaside at Lytham to take part in the Lytham St Annes 10 mile race. This is a road running event now in its 21st year. The course starts and finishes in the North Beach car park next to Todmorden Rd, St Annes. The course is mainly off the roads and uses pavements and paths leading up to the famous windmill where the runners turn and make their way back to the car park. Dave completed the race in an excellent 68:29. Roy Bamford headed to the south of the county for the South Yorkshire half marathon which he completed in 1:53:47. This Sunday also saw Dave Woodhead completing the Trimpell 20 in 2:39:17. On the fells this week Andy Norman and Sarah Booth took part in the Haworth Hobble on Saturday 15th March. 32 undulating miles from Haworth south towards Todmorden and Hebden Bridge and back, 4,400ft of ascent, which they completed in 6:49:50. Sarah reports “A lovely day out. A minute slower than my PB and we would have been quicker if my hat hadn't blown off into a reservoir overflow channel, managed to get it back though!” Missed result from last week, on Saturday 9 March Tony Mawson took part in the Ian Roberts Memorial fell race from Marsden cricket club in a time of 68:50. 24/3/14 On Sunday 22 March a number of pacers took part in the Thirsk 10 mile road race, a flat course with PB potential. First home for the club was Luke McQuade 1:09:41, followed by Philip Lonsdale 1:13:51, Mark Smith 1:17:15, David Nunn 1:18:06 (PB), John Popiolek 1:22:57, Trish Popiolek 1:23:04, Andrew Smithurst 1:27:34, John Woodhead 1:39:09, Helen Davies (guided by Melissa Stead) 1:41:15, and Carol Parkinson 1:43:00. At the Liverpool Half Marathon this weekend, Morven Wallace finished in 1:34:47, Simon Coughlan 1:48:33 and a new PB for Ralph McDermott in 2:13:52. In Cheshire at the Wilmslow Half Marathon sole Pacer Michael Hern crossed the line in 1:30:26.

On the fells this week Graeme Tiffany headed to Halifax for the Midgley Moor Fell race on Sunday 23 March. A challenging 5 mile race involving route choice on paths and heather moor. Graeme finished in 27th place in a time of 48:23. Opting for a longer run on the fells Steve Boom ran in the Edale Skyline fell race 20.72 miles with a total ascent of 1,387m. According to the website the terrain consists “ A mixture of good dirt trails, very rocky & technical in places, and some pleasant sheep trods through the grass & heather. Some sections of flagstones, and only a short section of tarmac through Hope. Beware the wet bogs around Brown Knoll!” Steve finished the race in 4:30:11.

A Poem by Big Eric

Here is a little limerick to make you think. Says big Eric, who writes using ink.

If you should check it, Do not blame big Eric,

As he is not too good, when he has to think.

A DOZEN, A GROSS, AND A SCORE

PLUS THREE TIMES THE SQUARE ROOT OF FOUR DIVIDED BY SEVEN

PLUS FIVE TIMES ELEVEN EQUALS NINE SQUARED, AND NOT A BIT MORE

More from Big Eric: Big Eric says, for losing weight, remember these basic rules 1 if no one sees you eat it, it has no calories. 2 if you eat snacks quickly, or with your head in the fridge, they have no calories. 3 if you drink diet cola with a chocolate bar they cancel each other out. 4 food eaten from someone else`s plate has no calories. And remember ladies: It’s hard to be devil-may-care When there are pleats in your derriere

Thanks to our team of helpers including David, Andy and Gary P and Leaders from PPRC.

The course culminated in the Lister Park Run on 15/3/14

The next course will commence in May 2014. Names are being taken now and it is

filling up fast.

Calderdale Relay Race 11 May 2014 – David Burdon, Club Captain This year's Calderdale Relay Race is on Sunday 11 May 2014.

There are 12 runners to a team paired up over 6 legs. The shortest leg is 4.8 miles and the longest leg 10.55 miles, but the

terrain for all of them is moorland/trail. And it's Calderdale, so hilly as well!

Firstly thanks to all those who have volunteered, we have more than enough for 2 teams but not enough for 3, we therefore have a number of reserves, please don't be

disheartened if you are currently a reserve. Reserves are worth their weight in gold

Nigel will be taking main responsibility for this race as I won’t be around on the day

having already committed to the Leeds Half Marathon, however I am happy to take on any queries whilst at the club should Nigel not be available.

Ask a Pacer I’ve had a cold, should I run?

Running with any kind of viral infection is a very bad idea indeed, and can mean that you end up out of action for months. Having said

that it's really important to listen to what your body tells you. If you feel like running, go for it, but keep it really gentle and be prepared

to bail out.

Here is Dave Byrom’s painful story for anyone in doubt about whether they should

run. And that’s without any symptoms.
