Memorial Day
May 29, 2017
“Shall I compare thee to a summer day? Thou art more lovely and more temperate:
Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May, And summer’s lease hath all too short a date;”
-William Shakespeare, “Sonnet 18”
West Windsor Senior Center
Well…………...here we are entering the sparkling, warm-er days of Spring with summer months just ahead. Two sure signs that this is happening are the brightness of the moon and the chirping of the birds in the early morning.
May is designated nationally as Older Americans Month. Communities across the country celebrate the value of the older adult . The Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation in the celebration presenting the 2017 theme, Age Out Loud, to give aging a new voice—one that reflects what today’s older adults have to say about aging. The theme highlights the many important trends associated with aging. Older Americans are work-ing longer, engaging in their communities, taking charge, striving for wellness, focusing on independence, and advo-cating for themselves and others. They are major contrib-utors in their communities and a source of volunteerism. Older Americans Month is the perfect opportunity to rec-ognize and celebrate what getting older looks like.
West Windsor Township plans to celebrate and honor all of you by filling the activity calendar with a variety of pro-grams including entertainment and light refreshments for your pleasure each Friday throughout the month. Older Americans month will kick off on Friday, May 5 with En-tertainment Hour by Tara. Tara is a lively entertainer who will surely have your toes tapping. On May 12, The Chant Tones, a dynamic, local acapella group, will perform songs from Broadway. Ted and Michael will present Puccini’s 1926 opera, Turandot, on May 19 and singer and keyboard entertainer, Craig Satchell, will end the month. In an ef-fort to provide sufficient seating and food, please sign up for each event. Be sure to read the newsletter for more specific details.
The participants here at the West Windsor Senior Center are ageless. They most definitely have a strong focus on health and wellness, they are active community members, they enjoy meeting friends at the Senior Center and they support each other. Getting older isn’t what it used to be. It is all about living life to the fullest and Age Out Loud!
Happy Spring!!! Donna Fucetola

Talking about Books
May 30 - Lilac Girls – Martha Hall Kelly - New York socialite Caro-
line Ferriday has her hands full with her post at the French consulate and a new love on the
horizon. But Caroline’s world is forever changed when Hitler’s army invades Poland in Sep-
tember 1939—and then sets its sights on France.
An ocean away from Caroline, Kasia Kuzmerick, a Polish teenager, senses her carefree youth
disappearing as she is drawn deeper into her role as courier for the underground resistance
movement. In a tense atmosphere of watchful eyes and suspecting neighbors, one false move
can have dire consequences.
For the ambitious young German doctor, Herta Oberheuser, an ad for a government medical
position seems her ticket out of a desolate life. Once hired, though, she finds herself trapped
in a male-dominated realm of Nazi secrets and power.
The lives of these three women are set on a collision course when the unthinkable happens
and Kasia is sent to Ravensbrück, the notorious Nazi concentration camp for women. Their
stories cross continents—from New York to Paris, Germany, and Poland—as Caroline and
Kasia strive to bring justice to those whom history has forgotten. Published 2016; in paper-
back; 512 pages; Library has 21 copies Leader – Mary Ann M
June 27 - And the Mountains Echoed – Khaled Hosseini - An unforgettable novel about finding a lost piece of yourself in someone else.
Khaled Hosseini, the #1 New York Times–bestselling author of The Kite Runner and A Thou-sand Splendid Suns, has written a new novel about how we love, how we take care of one another, and how the choices we make resonate through generations. In this tale revolving around not just parents and children but brothers and sisters, cousins and caretakers, Hosseini explores the many ways in which families nurture, wound, betray, honor, and sacrifice for one another; and how often we are surprised by the actions of those closest to us, at the times that matter most. Following its characters and the ramifications of their lives and choices and loves around the globe—from Kabul to Paris to San Francisco to the Greek island of Tinos—the story expands gradually outward, becoming more emotionally complex and powerful with each turning page. Published in 2013; in paperback; 448 pages;
Library has 28 copies Leader– Kathy
