Military and Education Officials Join Forces for
Memorandum of Understanding Celebration
Representatives from the
Marines, Army, WestVirginia National Guard, Air
Force, Navy, West Virginia
Wing of Civil Air Patrol, West
Virginia Congress of Parents
and Teachers, Inc.
Operation: Military Kids, the
state board of Education
and the State Department
of Education took part in
the celebration.
In April, the W.Va Board of
Education approved the
Common Ground:Education and Military
Partnership Agreement. The
agreement has two
focuses: to promote
mentoring, training, and
scholarship opportunities to
all students; and create
networks of people,
organizations and other
resources to help supportmilitary children.
Benefits of the common
ground include providing
career information
resources to schools in the
state, career counseling,
tutoring and career
mentors to inspire, advise,
and enlighten students.
The education resources
provided by military
branches should be made
available to all of our
students, said W.Va. Board
of Education President
Priscilla Haden, I am so
glad we have local
members of the military
who have local members
of the military who are
willing to take part in this
agreement.
Both the West VirginiaDepartment of Education
and the military are
dedicated to ensuring that
every student has the
resources necessary to
graduate from high school
and be career ready upon
graduation, said State
Superintendent Jorea
Marple. Every student,
whether interested in
joining the military or not,
can take advantage of theresources the military
provides. By signing this
MOU West Virginia CAP has
become an official partner
of the common ground
partnership.
The
educationresources
provided
by military
branches
should be
made
available
to all of our
students,
Priscilla

Encampment Report
The 2011 Cadet
Encampment hosted by
the West Virginia Wing of
Civil Air Patrol was a
great success, with 97
cadets completing the oneweek course held at Camp
Dawson near Kingwood,
W.Va.
13 Cadets were from other
Wings (2-MD), 5-PA), (5-
OH), and (1-DC), while
the rest were cadets from
WV. Every squadron in
the state was represented
this year at the
encampment.Approximately 67% of the
97 cadets completing the
encampment were first
timers. There were 14
seniors who worked as
staff members for the
encampment, as well as
several other seniors who
served as instructors
during the week. The
encampment was led by
C/Major Alancea Grant of
Parkersburg Squadron,
and C/Major Brian
Kruchkow of BeckleySquadron.
They were assisted by
C/Capt Jon Ball of Boone
Squadron, and C/Capt
Tiffany Staggs of
Morgantown. The
encampment first sergeant
was C/CMSgt Chris
Stockdale of Morgantown
Squadron.
At the end of theencampment, numerous
awards were presented to
cadets who earned special
honors and recognition for
their outstanding work. A
special treat this year at
the encampment was the
opportunity to obtain
flights in both a Black
Haw helicopter, and a C-
130 aircraft.
These flights were in
addition to the rappel
tower, leadership reaction
course, firing range, electronic range, land and
water survival classes,
W.Va. wildlife class plus
the confidence course. It
was a very busy week,
capped off by an
impressive pass and
review parade and
graduation ceremony.
Officials with Camp
Dawson had nothing butpraise for the conduct and
attitude of our cadets.
Dates for 2012
encampment are set for
July 6-14. Dates for the
2013 encampment are set
for June 21-29.
