The Power opens their campaign on the road for the first time since 2016, when they went 5-2 in a seven-game stretch at Greensboro and Greenville. West Virginia comes off a 2018 campaign where they finished 71-62 and fourth in the South Atlantic League (3rd in the Northern Division), missing the playoffs on the final day of the season with a heartbreaking loss to the Charleston RiverDogs. NOW REPPING THE WEST COAST: At the conclusion of the 2018 season, the Pittsburgh Pirates and West Virginia Power ended a 10-year player development affiliation that stretched back to 2009. A few weeks later, the Power inked a two-year deal with the Seattle Mariners, marking the first time the West Coast-based MLB club aligned themselves with a team in the SAL. This new union is the third different affiliation for the Power since they changed monikers in 2005 (Milwaukee, 2005-2008) and seventh since rejoining the Sally League in 1987 (CHC, CIN, KC and TOR). ALL NEW STAFF WITH FAMILIAR FACES: Though the club is in its first year as a Mariners affiliate, the coaching staff still brings a pair of familiar faces back to Charleston, West Virginia. First, the Power’s new manager, David Berg, has plenty of experience in the SAL, spending two years at the helm of the Greensboro Grasshoppers in 2012 and 2014. The 48-year-old was a manager for six years in the Marlins’ system before serving as the hitting coach for the Tacoma Rainiers in 2017 and 2018. Meanwhile, a second well-known figure makes his return to the Kanawha Valley in 2019, as Eric Farris comes back to Appalachian Power Park for the first time since 2008, when he was a Power player. Farris rejoins West Virginia as the team’s hitting coach after serving in a similar role with Everett in 2018, while Alon Leichman is the team’s new pitching coach after managing the Dominican Summer League pitching staff last year. Leichman spent 2017 as the Mariners’ Coordinator of Organizational Learning. Josh Gallagher and Kevin Childs also elevated from the AquaSox to West Virginia, serving as the team’s Athletic Trainer and Performance Specialist, respectively. A “POWER”FUL ROSTER: Once again, the West Virginia Power’s Opening Day roster is burgeoning with some of the most talented prospects in their parent club’s farm system. Four of the Mariners’ top prospects begin the year in West Virginia, including three in the top 10. Headlining the star-studded pack is #2 prospect Jarred Kelenic, whom Seattle traded for last December when they dealt Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz to the New York Mets for their most recent first-rounder. Following him is Julio Rodriguez, a Dominican phenom who will make his stateside debut in 2019 after dominating the Dominican Summer League in 2018. Rodriguez is the Mariners #4/#5 prospect depending on the publication. The final member of the Power’s top-10 trio is Logan Gilbert, who gets the ball on Opening Day. Gilbert, who slots in at #6 on the Mariners’ top-30 list, makes his first start in Minor League Baseball tonight. Last but not least is #23/#29 prospect Nolan Hoffman, a Texas A&M product who produced in a big way for the Aggies as well as in his first pro season between the AZL and Everett, boasting a 2.16 ERA in 21 games over 25 innings with four saves. GILLY GILLY: Gilbert toes the rubber on Opening Day for the Power, while also making his professional debut after missing all of last season due to injury (toe surgery and viral infection). Gilbert was Seattle’s 1st round draft pick in 2018 (14th overall) out of Stetson University, where he ranks second in career ERA (2.48) and in the top 10 in Ks and wins. The 21-year-old is the first-ever Power player to make his professional debut as West Virginia’s Opening Day starter. OPENING DAY: West Virginia is 4-11 on Opening Day dating back to the 2005 season. Greenville flummoxed the Power, 8-1, in last year’s season opener in Charleston, W.Va., behind six scoreless innings from Jhonathan Diaz and a 3-for-4, two RBI effort from leadoff man Kervin Suarez, who is on the Drive’s Opening Day roster this year as well. The club’s last season-opening triumph came on April 9, 2015, in a 7-6, 10-inning win over Savannah, which snapped a six-year stretch of Opening Day defeats. HOWDY, G-VILLE: The Power has embarked on its first trip to Greenville since 2017, when they split a four-game series with the Drive from August 18-21, 2017. West Virginia holds a 16-18 all-time record inside Greenville’s friendly confines. The club will make one more trip to Fluor Field in 2019, dialing up a four-game series from May 17-20, while the Drive comes to Appalachian Power Park for four games from June 6-9. The 12 head-to-head matchups between these two clubs this year will be the most they have ever played in a single season in series history. POWER POINT: 11 members of the Opening Day roster are making their full season debut, including the entire OF. 2019 SOUTH ATLANTIC LEAGUE FIRST HALF STANDINGS Southern Division Italics=Eliminated from Playoffs * = Division Winner W-L GB PCT Lexington 0-0 -- .000 Greenville 0-0 -- .000 Asheville 0-0 -- .000 Rome 0-0 -- .000 Charleston 0-0 -- .000 Columbia 0-0 -- .000 Augusta 0-0 -- .000 Northern Division Italics=Eliminated from Playoffs * = Divison; & = Wild Card W-L GB PCT West Virginia 0-0 -- .000 Hickory 0-0 -- .000 Lakewood 0-0 -- .000 Kannapolis 0-0 -- .000 Delmarva 0-0 -- .000 Greensboro 0-0 -- .000 Hagerstown 0-0 -- .000 CURRENT ROAD TRIP Record: 0-0 Batting Statistics: AVG: .000 (0-for-0) AB: 0 RISP: 0-for-0 (.000) H: 0 R: 0 HR: 0 BB: 0 SO: 0 SB: 0 Defensive Statistics: W-L: 0-0 ERA: 0.00 Quality Starts: 0 IP: 00.0 H: 0 R: 0 ER: 0 SV/OPP: 0/0 BB: 0 SO: 0 HR: 0 Errors: 0 0-0 Date Location Result April 4 Greenville 7:05 P.M.
