I want to see everyone playing sports! I want to provide the opportunities for everyone to participate, regardless of their fitness level. There are many benefits to being active – for the individual there are mental, social and of course, physical benefits. It’s a great stress reliever too.

Apprentice Soundbite Ria Kaur Level 3 Business Administration Apprentice at Hounslow Council

I’ve learnt so much at work. I’m really supported and I haven’t felt at any point like I couldn’t do it. I’ve been able to get involved with lots of different things including interviewing other apprentices and organising an award ceremony. I’ve been given lots of responsibility and opportunities. It’s been the perfect environment to learn in.

As well as hair skills, I’ve also learnt more people skills. When I started I was nervous about answering the phone, but now I don’t even think about it. That’s the good thing about an apprenticeship – you have to do the job from day one and it builds your confidence. I would definitely recommend an apprenticeship – you get hands on experience and you’re studying at college too.

30

What is an Apprenticeship?•As an Apprentice you’ll experience

the best of both worlds - you’ll gain valuable qualifications, while having a job and earning money.

•You will be paid by your employer as you work alongside experienced staff to gain on-the-job training and skills.

•As you progress, your skills will be assessed in your workplace by one of our assessors.

•You will come to West Thames College, usually once or twice a week, to gain vocational qualifications and underpinning knowledge – usually an NVQ, functional skills and a City & Guilds or BTEC technical qualification.

•By the time you’ve completed your Apprenticeship, you will be an experienced, professional, fully qualified member of staff.

Apprentice Soundbite Christopher Johnson Level 2 Hospitality Services Apprentice at Aramark, Northwood HQ

I think doing the apprenticeship is a good option because you step straight into a career. You’re working in a real kitchen with professional chefs and it gives you a chance to get hands on experience doing the job. You get used to working quickly and getting things ready on time. At the same time you are supported by the rest of the team and everyone chips in to get the job done.

Get the skills to progressWhether you plan to go on to university or gain employment after your course, your programme of study will be tailor-made to ensure you progress successfully on to your next step, giving you the skills, experience and confidence you need to impress your future employer. In addition to your main qualification, your programme of study will include the key ingredients listed on the opposite page.

Maths and English Good literacy and numeracy skills are essential if you want to progress. Most employers will not offer you a job and most colleges and universities will not offer you a place on a course unless you have achieved GCSE Grade C (or equivalent) in English and Maths. This is why Maths and English GCSE or functional skills will be a key part of your study programme if you haven’t already achieved this standard.

Independent study If you go to university or get a job, you will be expected to work on your own and as part of a team, using your own initiative. To prepare you for this, independent study (or as we call it, Directed Self-Study) will form a key part of your course – for English and maths as well as your main qualification – as this will improve your level of self-discipline. Your teacher will give you a project or some research to do – either by yourself or in small groups. Directed Self-Study sessions usually take place in the Learning Resources Centre, supervised by our iLearn Assistants. On some courses, you may be able to use our workshops and studios for project work during these sessions.

Employability skills To make sure you are job-ready by the time you finish your course, all 16-18 year-old students have Employability skills timetabled into their study programme. You will have one-to-one sessions with our team of Employability Advisers to help you find work, improve your interview technique and write an effective CV. You will also get to listen to guest speakers from industry, go to careers fairs, trade shows and exhibitions, have work experience opportunities and take part in business enterprise projects led by employers. You will be able to gain a Bronze, Silver or Gold Employability Certificate depending on the number of activities you do.

We also run a Job Shop – advertising job and apprenticeship vacancies and helping you to apply.

For more information, ask for a copy of our Employability Development Programme leaflet.

Enrichment In addition to sports and fitness, we actively encourage students to get involved in other activities and events that will make a real difference to student life and society in general. For example, getting involved in the Student Union, becoming a Student Ambassador, helping to raise awareness about key issues that affect young people, volunteering and raising money for charity all help to develop your personal and social skills, so you become a well-rounded, knowledgeable and confident person when you leave college.

Careers advice Our dedicated Careers Advisers will help you with your next step – whether you want to progress to another course or find employment or an apprenticeship.

Apply to university If you are a Level 3 student and wish to go to university, our Careers Advisers will guide you through the step-by-step process and help you to apply via UCAS.com. We organise HE information events with universities and trips for students considering university. We also hold an HE Information Evening for you and your parents/guardians.
