The feuding families become the rivalry between two teenage New York City street gangs of different ethnic backgrounds. The members of the Sharks from Puerto Rico are taunted by the Jets, a Polish-American working-class group. Their hatred escalates --in the streets, the alleys, the school dance ("neutral territory")-- to a point where neither can coexist and they plan a rumble - whoever wins gains control of the streets.

Amidst this tense backdrop.. Tony and Maria meet and fall in love at a school dance. But these star-crossed lovers are from different sides of

the two gangs that dominate the streets. Tony is a former Jet and the best friend of the Jet's leader Riff. And

Maria is the younger sister of Bernardo, the Sharks leader. And no one can do anything to stop their love.

... Maria and Tony begin meeting in secret, planning to run away...
