Most light planes are capable of taking off or land- ing in 90-degree crosswinds that are less than 20 percent of the airplane’s power-off stall speed. She’s zeroed in on her fundraising activities Sherry Jo Painter-Torres is constantly promoting such events as Relay for Life, TIMPO Sherry Jo Painter-Torres is a master of deflection. Ask her about her work for Pettis County Relay For Life, and she shares ways you can make a donation in honor of a cancer survivor or lost loved one. Ask about her efforts on behalf of the Tiger Instrumen- tal Music Promoters Organi- zation (TIMPO), the booster club for the Sedalia school district’s instrumental music departments, and she reminds you of upcoming fundraisers that will help high school marching band students pay their way to perform at the Memphis Bowl in December. While Relay For Life is a late spring event, Painter-Tor- res is “all about Relay all year ‘round,” she said. “There is way too much cancer — it has to be stopped.” She has been involved with Relay for eight years, previ- ously as online chair and as accounting chair this year. Her co-chair is Deb Freels, a fellow member of Team Shank-A-Potamus, which has won the “Flame of Hope” award each of the past two years; the award goes to the team that has sold the most lu- minaria bags for the Relay. Last year the team, mostly comprised of Painter-Torres’ and Freels’ children and their friends, sold 88 of the bags, which they personalized to honor a cancer survivor or cancer patient suggested by the donor. “The kids worked hard to win the ‘Flame of Hope’ award, and they plan to win it again this year,” Painter-Tor- res said. Her team is made up of youths because “kids need to understand that cancer doesn’t care what race you are, what color you are, how old you are, where you live, none of that,” she said. On Saturday, her team sponsored a crafting day that featured scrapbooking, quilt- ing and other activities, along with meals and prizes. The event raised $940 for Relay. Painter-Torres’ fundraising efforts are not limited to the fight against cancer, however. As treasurer of TIMPO, she helped the Smith-Cotton band pack the school’s cafeteria for the annual Big Band Dance a couple of weeks ago; pro- ceeds will help replace the band’s 12-year-old bass drums and help cover expenses for the Memphis Bowl trip. Brian Kloppenburg, direc- tor of instrumental music for Sedalia School District 200, said of Painter-Torres: “Sherry Jo works tirelessly to promote the band program in Sedalia. She helps handle fi- nances outside our budget, shows up during school hours to drop off or pick up things for students, and is always ready to lend a hand. Our pro- gram wouldn’t be what it is without her help.” Painter-Torres, who esti- mates she spends about eight hours each week on band-re- lated volunteerism, said: “I’m happy to assist with whatever (Kloppenburg and assistant bands director Stephen Broad- bent) need. It’s been a crazy year.” One way she helps is by soliciting donations of new or used items that help the band prepare for marching, concert and competition seasons. Stu- dents assemble on the band practice field behind the high school in late July for summer camp, as the marching band prepares for its annual appear- ance in the Missouri State Fair parade. To help the students cope with the heat, Painter- Torres is looking for dona- tions of pop-up canopies for shade and large coolers to store ice and water. She said another way resi- dents can help the instrumen- tal music programs is by donating new or used musical instruments. And she stressed that TIMPO is a booster club that benefits “any Sedalia 200 child who picks up an instru- ment,” not just high school students. The 2012 Relay For Life of Pettis County is set for 6 p.m. June 8 to 6 a.m. June 9 at the west campground on the Mis- souri State Fairgrounds. This year’s theme is “Color Me a Cure,” and teams will be asked to select a color corre- sponding with one of the can- cer awareness ribbons and decorate their campsite with that color, along with creating posters to provide information about that specific form of cancer. Painter-Torres said there is still time to register a team, and the funds raised make a real difference in the commu- nity. “If you are a Pettis County cancer patient (and) you need help, we’re going to help you,” she said. Helping Cancer SurvivorsNavigate Life After Treatment(NAPS)—Here’s some news that may brighten your day.

Currently, there are 12 million cancer survivors in the U.S.However, as more people win the battle against cancer, many of

these survivors have questions about what comes next.“Survivors are people living with, through and beyond cancer,”

said Michael Link, M.D., president of the American Society ofClinical Oncology (ASCO). “The period following treatment can befull of uncertainties. It is one ofthe most complex aspects ofthe cancer experience becauseit is different for every per-son.”

Accurate, easy-to-under-stand information can helpsurvivors make smart choic-es.

ASCO offers a new booklet based on patient information foundon its website, Cancer.Net (www.cancer.net). The booklet helpspatients understand what to expect as cancer treatment is complet-ed; explains common challenges faced by survivors; and offers sug-gestions for next steps following treatment on such things as nutri-tion, physical activity, quitting smoking and stress reduction. It alsoincludes a list of questions to ask your health care providers, focus-ing on your long- term health.

Following active treatment, many patients find it helpful to cre-ate a survivorship care plan, in which to store information abouttheir cancer, treatment and follow-up care. Keeping track of yourmedical history is useful to future doctors who will provide care.

“One of the best ways to ensure that survivors have a smoothtransition into their new normal lives is to implement a survivor-ship care plan. Survivorship care plan documents, available freefrom ASCO, are helpful to ensure that doctors, nurses, social work-ers and other health professionals are aligned in their goals follow-ing active cancer treatment,” said Dr. Link.

Survivors may also want to learn more about:•The definitions of medical terms used after cancer treatment is

completed;•The more than 40 common side effects of cancer and its treat-

ment;•Setting realistic goals when making lifestyle changes, such as

better nutrition or more physical activity;•Different ways to mark mile- stones in your cancer treatment

plan and survivorship. For more information about cancer and for a copy of the booklet,

visit ASCO’s website at www.cancer.net.Contact your advertising representative if you would like to have

your business featured in this space.

A new booklet found online provides awealth of information to help those livingthrough or beyond cancer.

Largemouth bass evolved in small, shal-low bodies of water. While there’s no deny-ing that the species has adapted well to largereservoirs, it’s logical to assume a higherpercentage of the largemouths living in smallbodies of water will reach their full geneticpotential. Even a casual glance at the Missouri

Master Angler records, which show a dispro-portionate share of trophy largemouths com-ing from private ponds, provides proof ofthis theory.Unfortunately, few of us will ever get to

cast a lure into a lunker-rich private pond, but we can all fish in Missouri Departmentof Conservation (MDC) impoundments. Most of them are larger than most farmponds, but they’re small enough to providegood representations of the largemouth bass’ancestral home.Picking the best of the best among the

dozens of MDC impoundments with well-earned reputations for super-sized large-mouths isn’t easy. My consultations with biologists and

local experts have produced one impound-ment in each of the state’s geographic quar-ters that clearly outperforms its peers. This week I’ll give you thumbnail

sketches of the two located in the northwest-ern and northeastern quadrants of the state.Next week, I’ll cover two equally good betsfound in southeastern and southwestern Mis-souri.Lake Paho, which is located in Mercer

County near Princeton, is 273 acres of lunkerheaven. In 2009, 75 percent of the bass theagency sampled here were more than 15inches long. A significant number of thosefish ranged from 20 inches to more than 23inches in length. The lake is oriented on a southeast-north-

west axis, and large coves and small pocketswith east-west orientations can be foundfrom one end of the lake to the other, includ-ing within walking distance of the manyparking lots located around the lake. There isa concrete ramp, and private boats and out-board motors are allowed, subject to a no-wake speed limit. Fluctuating water levels are the norm

here. When the water’s high, bass move intoflooded vegetation along the shoreline. Thelake has little aquatic vegetation, so look for

lunkers off points, in brush piles and alongsubmerged channels when the water’s at nor-mal pool or below.Leave your stringer at home. Lake Paho

has an 18-inch minimum length limit onblack bass with a two-fish daily creel limit.Hazel Creek Lake is one of two impound-

ments that supply Kirksville’s potable water, and both the lake and the land surrounding itare owned by the city. The lake’s fishery ismanaged by the MDC under the terms of aCommunity Assistance Program. The termsof the agreement currently in force allowsthe use of private boats, but only electricmotors can be used. No rental boats areavailable. At normal pool, Hazel Creek Lake covers

530 surface acres and is oriented on a north-west-southeast axis. Its main body is abouttwo miles long, and there are two large sidebranches. This inherent potential for battery-drain-

ing runs is increased by the fact that one ofits two boat ramps is located off HungryHollow Road near the lake’s headwaters, andthe other is off Buck Creek Road approxi-mately midway down the lake’s northeastshoreline. If the lake is above its normal pool, hone

in on flooded vegetation associated withpoints, break lines or other classic structures. If that tactic doesn’t produce or if the lake istoo low to flood shoreline vegetation, woodycover in the coves, points and submergedcreek channels are good options.More often than not at Hazel Creek Lake,

bigger lures attract bigger bass, but big baitsalso attract big, toothy muskies. Many local anglers recommend using

steel leaders to minimize bite-offs, but 50-pound test fluorocarbon leaders should workalmost as well and should be less apt tospook wary bass.Stringers are optional but frowned upon

by lake regulars. A 15-inch minimum lengthlimit is in force with a daily creel limit of six.Lake Paho and Hazel Creek Lake are

every bit as good as they sound. But wait! There are two impoundments on our side ofthe Missouri River that are just as exciting.

***Q: Genie Francis is one of my all-

time favorite actresses, and I justlove her in the Hallmark Channel's"The Note" series. Will there be athird movie? -- Catherine F., Harris-burg, Pa.A: Just in time for Mother's Day,

Genie Francis and Ted McGinley areback as newlyweds Peyton MacGruderand King Danville in "Notes from theHeart Healer," premiering Sunday,May 13, on the Hallmark Channel. The couple is celebrating their first an-niversary when they are surprised byan abandoned baby on their doorstep. Ispoke with Genie recently, and shewas excited to explore the motheringaspect of the character, since Peytongave up a child for adoption 20-someyears earlier."What I love most about Peyton is

that she gets involved and she bringseverything up as if it were a spiritualquestion like, 'Why did I get this babyon my doorstep?' She wants to helpprevent the mother of this abandonedbaby from ending up like her.Throughout this, there's a healing forPeyton in that she knows that she's gotin her to be a good mother."

independent real-estate agent HeatherCruz. Marisol told me recently whyshe loves her character so much: "Icould understand what she had to doto survive in this community, and I feltlike she was the most grounded out ofeverybody. She worked her butt off toget to where she is: She didn't inherit abusiness; she wasn't born into money;she didn't marry into it. She had tomake it on her own, and that I cancompletely relate to. I've been work-ing odd jobs since I was 12. I think Iforged my ID when I was a kid so thatI could work at 14. I wanted to work; Ididn't want to have to ask people formoney."
