Chairman’s Report Welcome everybody - Leaders, Parents and Cubs, Scouts and Venturers. 2014 was good year for WPH Scouts troop. Reiterating the Leaders’ reports, there were many activities completed and fun had by all. Our bank accounts are healthy as you will hear in the Treasurer’s report. The hall is in good shape with some major changes being the bathroom renovations and the floor with sanding and polishing at the Scout end. 2015 Scouts Report The years fly by! It seems not that long ago that we were all jumping on the bus to go to Maryborough for Jamboree in 2013, and we’re about to do it all again. In January 2016 Hulk and I will be attending Jamboree with 12 Scouts from our troop, together with Scouts and Leaders from two other troops, 2/3 Pennant Hills and Roseville. Jamboree years are always full of activities and preparations, so I look forward to a busy 6 months ahead – only 232 days to go until opening ceremony! The year behind us has seen us busy doing all our usual scouting things - as well as a few new ones! – and we were honoured to be part of the recent ANZAC Day ceremonies at Hornsby in this centenary commemoration year. Within the troop we have had a bit of a changeover, losing a number of our older Scouts at start of the year, but also welcoming a bevy of new Cubs, keen to move up to the Scout section in time to qualify for Jamboree. We also have a few members brand new to Scouting and they are to be commended not only for joining, but almost immediately also committing to attend Jamboree. I understand that this is a big step for both the new Scouts and their parents, and we hope you find the journey exciting and rewarding. The Scouts have all been working hard on their target awards. In the past year we have seen a number awarded their Blue Cord, and we have a couple actively working towards their Green Cord. The newer Scouts are all doing well progressing towards their Pioneer target, which they require for Jamboree. It is great to see the skills developing across the troop. We have also had a change in our leadership team, as both Archie and Lolly have retired after many years of service as leaders in both the Cub and Scout sections. I haven’t quite forgiven either of them yet, but do wish them well for their futures in the outside world. To replace them, both Paul Anderson (Hulk) and Wendy Farrell (Dingo) have moved up from the Cub section, and we have recently been joined by a brand new leader in training – Alison Costello (Mario). I am looking forward to working with you all for the remainder of the year.

And I say “remainder of the year” as I will be moving on myself at the end of the year. Last November I accepted a position on the District team, and will move to that role full time following Jamboree. I would like to take this opportunity to thank you all for your support over the past few years – the Leaders who freely shared their time, knowledge, camaraderie and support, the committee who diligently fundraise to ensure we have all the equipment we need, but most of all the Scouts and their parents, without whom, of course, we would all have nothing to do. It is an amazing experience watching young people grow in confidence and skill, and I have been honoured to share in your journey. Mary Page (Sueme)

2015 Venturers Report The West Pennant Hills Venturer Unit meets with 4 other Venturer units to form Beecroft/Cheltenham. These groups include Beecroft, Roselea, Cherrybrook and West Pennant Hills. The group generally meets on a Monday night at the Beecroft/Cheltenham Scout/Guide Hall on The Crescent, Beecroft. The group has around 20 youth members. Our current leaders are Dan Bennett and Mark Boulter who are both parents of current venturers and now supervise the group. The group is currently chaired by Wun Zee with Nick Choy acting as treasurer for the group. The Venturers have had a busy year starting with Dragon Skin at Easter. This is the highlight camp / hiking event for Sydney Venturers. A good time was had by all who participated. We have four venturers currently aiming towards achieving their Queenscout with two of them almost complete. We hope to follow on in Emma Mee’s footsteps, who achieved her Queen’s Scout award last year. Normal nights are organised by the Venturers on a roster basis and about 50% of meetings are in hall and 50% out and about. External activities can include wacky activities such as formal Macca's (fast food in black tie/cocktail dress) and tent runs (going into the city and seeing which group can take a photo of a tent in the strangest location). We are looking forward to another fun year ahead. Chris Pidd !

2015 Group Leader’s Report West Pennant Hills has had a busy time in 2014, this being a year of consolidation, midway between two Jamborees and making significant improvements to our hall. The dedication and hard work of our leaders and the group committee contributed greatly. I would like to thank our committee who have agreed to extend their term.

• Charles Jarrett – Group President • Peter Macfarlane – Treasurer • Tanya Toms – Hall Co-ordinator And welcome our new Group Secretary, Claire Northrop. I would especially like to thank our retiring Membership Secretary, Jon Hasty, who has a done a great job over the past few years keeping our membership up to date and organising the Christmas tree roster each year. We still have a rather small committee and invite other parents, especially from the Cub section’ to become involved with the running of the group. Our membership numbers are quite strong

• 11 leaders • 24 cubs • 20 scouts • 4 venturers They have remained steady over the past year and we aim to increase our membership in the future. I would like to welcome to new leaders who have just begun their training - Stuart McDonald in the Cub section and Alison Costello in the Scout section. Paul Anderson has transitioned to the Scout section and Wendy Farrell will also move to Scouts over the coming year. This is especially helpful, as the Scouts have lost two leaders over the past year and the current Scout Leader, Mary will soon be leaving us to become the District Scout Leader . The group still needs a few more leaders, at least one more in Cubs and one in the Scouts section. !

Training This year has seen a lot of formal training conducted in all sections and it is worth mentioning how much formal training is actually being conducted. All leaders have completed new online modules regarding Child Safe Scouting and Workplace Health and Safety. By August all leaders will have completed the new nationally accredited Working With Children Checks. I might add that this scheme was based on the checking system that was devised by Scouts NSW and has been adopted as a national standard. Kerrie Preston-Jenkins has completed her Cub Scout Leader training and Paul Anderson has almost completed his Scout Training and is away on the Sectional Techniques course this weekend. Wendy Farrell has completed her Advanced Cub Scout Training and has been awarded her Wood Badge. This is not a trivial achievement so congratulations are in order.

Group Events • In December we had a very successful barefoot

bowling Christmas Party • A very successful Family Camp at Glenrock

Up-coming events involving the group include: • West Pennant Hills Public School Fete in August • Family Camp to be again at Glenrock in September • Group Christmas party • Two WPH scouts, Kieran Randle and Matt Anderson

planning to attend the World Scout Jamboree in Japan 2015.

• Preparation for Jamboree at Cataract in January 2016. The Group will be providing support to Cromehurst Scout Group, a special needs Scout Group, to have members attend this jamboree.

I would like to thank the Leaders, Committee and parents for their support over the past year and we look forward to a successful 2015 and beyond. Yours in Scouting, Kevin Pidd

2015 Hall Co-ordinator and Fundraising Report 2014 was a big year for our group. The hall was casually used by a few new groups for dancing, RC cars and school holiday cartoon workshops as well as our regular hirers. With our regular and casual hirers we raised $12228.50 in hall hire which directly goes back into maintaining and running the hall. Through grants and fundraising we were able to renovate both the boys’ and girls’ bathrooms in September. The bathroom renovation cost $18269.17. To pay for this we ran 2 Bunnings BBQs at Dural and Castle Hill raising over $2600. The committee applied for and received $11200 in grants.

• Clayton Utz - $1,850 • IBM - $2,200 • WPH Sports club - $2,000 • 2014 NSW Community Building partnership grant -

$5,000 Through Scouts Australia we were able to receive a refund of GST of approx. $1,600. $150 worth of gift cards came from Bunnings Thornleigh for gift wrapping at Father’s Day. We also had the large room’s floor sanded and re-varnished in Jan 2015. Fundraising in 2015 will go directly towards Australian Jamboree 2016 and sanding the small room’s floor.

Grants !!!A very big THANK YOU to Peter Macfarlane, our committee treasurer, for applying and successfully receiving a $2200 grant from IBM Australia. This grant is only available to employees who volunteer with a community group and contribute at least 100 hours in a year. !

AWARDS 2015 Cubs of the Year Joss Aston-Louis Citation: Joss is born leader, instigator and mentor for her peers. Favourite quote from Cubs "My it was a lot of work (the Cub Leadership course), but I learnt heaps. It was awesome girlfriend." Always positive, and encouraging. Joss is a classic example of a Cub upholding the Cub Scout Law and promise,in particular- "A cub does not give into themselves." !Dylan Boniface Citation: Dylan is a well rounded cub and is always willing to help others especially new chums and leaders. Favourite quote from Cub "Yes I want to do my Grey Wolf so I had better do something about it before I turn 11." Always positive, a true leader and mentor. Dylan is a great example of a Cub upholding the Cub Scout Law and Promise, in particular- "To help other people" and "loyal and obedient" !2015 Scout of the Year I am pleased to announce that this year’s Scout of the Year is Samantha Boniface. Samantha started with our troop in November 2012 and immediately made a great impression, being awarded Best Scout on Camp at Easter Camp only a few short months after she was invested. Samantha is a consistently cheerful, enthusiastic and considerate member of the troop, and is a living embodiment of the Scout Promise and Law. She participates fully in all of her scouting activities and works hard to improve and achieve her target awards. She was appointed as Patrol Leader this time last year, was awarded her Blue Cord in January this year and is well on her way to earning her Green Cord. Over recent months she has been assisting

with the Cub Pack on Monday nights, and helped out on the Pack Holiday in March. Samantha – it has been a delight having you in the troop. I look forward to working with you at Jamboree, and watching your continued successes in the Scout section over the next 18 months, and into the future. Congratulations Citation: For being a cheerful, enthusiastic and considerate member of the troop and for living by the Scout Promise and Law. !

2015 Venturer of the Year I am proud to announce that this year’s Venturer of the Year is Chris Pidd. Chris joined West Pennant Hills when he was a Cub and has been an active and reliable member of the West Pennant Hills Scout Troop and Beecroft / Cheltenham Venturer Unit since. With enthusiasm and energy, Chris has been the quiet achiever, diligently and independently completing his Queen’s Scout activities over the last 2 years. During this time he volunteered at Cherrybrook scout group, played basketball for his personal growth activity, learnt to scuba dive for his outdoor activity and demonstrated leadership skills by being unit chair for 6 months. Well done Chris for all the hard work. Citation: Presented to Chris Pidd for his continued commitment to Scouting, his leadership and diligence. !

West Pennant Hills helps 1st Cromehurst attend the Australian Jamboree

1st Cromehurst (Special Needs) Scouts are a passionate and active group of young people. They live for life and we want them to work with our able bodied friends in every way possible.

With four youth members and one scout leader registered to go to the next Australian Scout Jamboree in January 2016, 1st Cromehurst is looking for sponsorship to subsidise each person to attend the Jamboree. As the parents already have enough day to day issues to deal with, i.e. one on one care, respite or recreational needs, Scouting adventures are an ideal way to give the parents a break and add some seriously good fun and demanding experiential learning… like living away from home for 12 days at a Scout Jamboree.

West Pennant Hills is tracking very well in its Jamboree fund raising programme and as a result the Scout Group has decided to sponsor and fund the 1st Cromehurst Scout Leader, Mel Howells, to attend AJ2016. This is a great opportunity to help our brother scouts and apply the principal of the fourth Scout Law.

WPH Cub Scouts Planted An Idea And Pursued It,,,

Late last year the Leaders together with the sixers of the cub pack planted and implemented an idea to put more fun into boomerang work and achievement badges by asking the local high school if they could utilise some of their overgrown garden beds for West Pennant Hills Cub Pack. It was agreed that 4 garden beds would be made available.

The cubs set to with weeding, turning and preparing each of the garden beds for planting of vegetables and herbs to grow for the pack and the group. Starting in February 2015 and visits programmed every four weeks throughout the two terms the fruit of their labour are almost ready to be reaped. In mid June another evening has been programmed for reaping their benefits.

West Pennant Hills Scout Group Family Camp 2015

West Pennant Hills Scout Group is holding our Annual Family Camp at Glenrock, near Newcastle on the weekend of 4th / 5th / 6th September 2015. The family camp is a relaxing weekend to be enjoyed by Cubs, Scouts and Venturers together with their siblings and parents. It’s a great opportunity for the whole group to get together. There will be a few activities scheduled which you can participate in or you can just do your own thing. Glenrock is one of the nicest Scout facilities available. It has a large lagoon suitable for canoeing and swimming and a spectacular surf beach. The surf beach is unpatrolled but it is a short walk around the headland to Nobby's Beach which is patrolled and has some nice coffee shops. Glenrock is in a hidden valley and there are some excellent bush walks available. The accommodation consists of 4 berth bunk rooms or campsites are available if you prefer. There is a large communal kitchen and each family will be rostered to assist with one meal or morning/afternoon tea. !!!!!!!!! !

Lagoon & Accommodation / Amenities More details will be provided closer to the date but feel free to ask any of the cub or scout leaders if you have any questions. This is a great opportunity to get away with the family for a relaxing and inexpensive weekend.
