Beursplein is a large-scale, multiuse urban development in the centre of Rotterdam. The insertion of an armature, completed in 1996, in the form of a below-grade pedestrian concourse, has connected existing but distinct shopping and market districts on either side of the city’s main thoroughfare, known as the Coolsingel, and improved the area around the busy Beursplein Metro Station. Set below the city, yet open to the sky under a sinuous glass canopy, the concourse is accessible by ramps and stairs, escalators and elevators.
