Canadian author Tom Rand is coming to Nelson to speak about the dangers of passive denial when it comes to climate change. Taking a proactive approach to finding solutions, the entrepreneur will talk about the positive stories of clean energy abundance. The event is free for Selkirk College students.
Presented by the Citizens’ Cli-mate Lobby, Rand will be at the Capitol Theatre on March 16 at 7 p.m. A former successful software entrepreneur, Rand will speak about his new book Waking the Frog: Solutions for Our Climate Change Paralysis and the Dangers
of Passive Denial. The title is based on the myth
that if you put a frog in a pot of water and boil the water slowly, the cold-blooded creature will not hop out because its nervous sys-tem can’t pick up that it is slowly dying. Rand argues that our soci-ety is paralyzed by inaction and not focused on the positive stories of clean energy abundance.
“We’re human beings, we’re not the frog… all we have to do is wake up,” he says. “It is my belief that we have yet to have a seri-ous, public conversation about the threat of climate change, and the economic opportunities afforded
by the global transformation to a low-carbon economy.”
In his discussion, Rand will talk about the benefits of mak-ing change and ways to achieve a sustainable future. Rand looks to contemporary psychology, eco-nomics, business and finance to explain the inaction in the face of the climate change crisis.
He doesn’t just point fingers and attach blame; Rand will talk about our motivations, institu-tional lethargy and deeply buried assumptions about market eco-nomics. Tickets are $10. The event is sponsored by a host of commu-nity organizations and businesses.
Tom Rand talks climate change and Waking the Frog
Sponsors of the Tom Rand event gathered with 100 copies of his book Waking the Frog, which will be giv-en to the first 100 people through the door at the Capitol Theatre in Nelson on March 16. Rand, an author and activist, is coming to Nelson to speak on the threat of climate change and the economic opportunities afforded by the global transformation to a low-carbon economy. Good hearing, poor comprehension? e number of people who can hear well, but can’t understand what’s being said, is increasing. is is most evident in conversations and watching television. A newly-developed hearing chip is designed to restore speech comprehension without being noticeable in the ear.
A lot of people have poor comprehension, though they actually still hear well. It becomes noticeable in conversation, watching television and asking family to repeat what’s been said. A potential cause can be undetected loss in the high-frequency range. is means the sensory cells in the cochlea that hear high-range sounds are damaged as a result of circulatory disorders, diabetes, sudden hearing loss or workplace noise. Hearing loss in the high-frequency range makes speech sound mu ed and unclear. e person with hearing loss mixes up, or can no longer hear, consonants like s, f, t, k, h and g. Speech comprehension is particularly impaired when there is background noise or when television programs have background music. e dilemma is that people with hearing loss in the high-frequency range do not
consider themselves to have a hearing problem. ey can hear deep tones with no issue, and o en put di culty understanding speech down to unclear pronunciation. However, the time soon comes when problems with comprehension become annoying.
A new hearing chip has beendeveloped.
Swiss audiologists have developed a new hearing chip that restores speech comprehension, particularly with hearing loss in the high-frequency range. People can test the new Audéo V system by Phonak simply by calling now to do so. First, a hearing test
Ginette van Wijngaarden, at Connect Hearing, advises people with hearing loss on the new hearing chip, together with her colleagues.
and speech comprehension analysis is done. Where inner-ear damage is present, a so ware program analyzes the di erence relative to normal hearing. ese values are then input into the new Venture hearing chip in the Audéo V, which precisely takes into account and balances the frequency range of the person being tested. e test phase in particular is designed to clarify how speech comprehension can be improved in various situations and what role a new technology called “Autosense OS” plays. e chip recognizes where the person being spoken to is located and ampli es only his or her voice, while ambient noise is lowered and the optimum hearing programs are seamlessly adjusted. anks to several synchronous microphones, the hearing system can detect sound in all directions and select the direction that speech is coming from within milliseconds. According to Swiss researchers, this signi cantly augments speech comprehension, especially in conversation.
Interested people can register for a no-obligation demonstration of the Audéo V by calling 888.408.7377

Community
Seniors, students and low income earners take note — number crunch-ers have pencils sharp-ened, ready to do your taxes for free.
The Community Vol-unteer Income Tax Pro-gram is a collaboration between the Canada Revenue Agency and lo-cal organizations with an objective to help eligible taxpayers who need help preparing and filing in-come tax and benefit returns.
To qualify for the free service, individual income must be under $30,000; family earnings less than $40,000; and for a single parent with one child, $35,000 with $2,500 allowed for each individual child.
Free tax clinics run five days a week until April 30 from 9 to 11 a.m,. throughout Great-er Trail, starting with the Trail Seniors Centre (Greater Trail Commu-nity Centre) on Mondays; Tuesday at Kate’s Kitchen on Rossland Ave.; and Wednesdays at the Trail FAIR Society on Colum-bia Ave.
The program then moves to the Beaver Valley Manor on Lau-rier Ave. in Fruitvale on Thursdays, then every Friday, volunteers will
be on site in Rossland at the Esling Park Lodge on Spokane St.
In the Nelson area, the Nelson and District Seniors Coordinating So-ciety runs the program year round with appoint-ment or by drop-off at 719 Vernon St. on Tues-days from 10 a.m. until noon. For information call 250-352-6008, email [email protected], or visit the Canada Rev-enue website at cra-arc.gc.ca.
People accessing the program are asked to bring all slips includ-ing T3s, T4s, T5s and receipts for medical ex-penses, child arts and recreational programs, charitable donations, as well as a copy of the pre-vious year’s return.
All information is confidential and once the tax return is electroni-cally filed, the comput-ers are wiped clean (in-formation is not stored year-to-year). Interviews are on a first-come-first-serve basis.
For more informa-tion, visit trailtimes.ca and click on the calendar link for a listing of dates, times, and contact infor-mation for the program.
In Greater Trail, the program has been run-ning for about a decade, and over that period, saved countless individ-ual and families from los-
ing a portion of their tax return to processing fees.
“I chose to volunteer for the program be-cause there are a lot of people who don’t have the money to pay to have their returns done,” says Elaine Jones, a four-year program member. “It could be $60 bucks, which might not sound like a huge fee, but they just don’t have it.
“Last year, I did 100 returns,” Jones said. “An-other volunteer did 100, and the other three vol-unteers each completed 35. So we are doing quite a few as the message gets out.”
Jones maintains that often low income earn-ers, and people on as-sistance, don’t feel em-powered to file a yearly tax return. That outlook is changing somewhat, she explained, because if the annual income tax forms are not filed, then the person won’t receive benefits such as GST and climate control rebate cheques, a guaranteed income supplement, or child tax benefits.
“I have the program back to 2005,” she noted. “So if anybody comes in with eight or even 10 years of taxes, I can do that for them. I can get them all caught up so they can start receiving the rebate cheques they are entitled to.”
Persons with invest-ment income well in excess of $1,000, capital gains/losses, partnership income, rental income, business or professional income, farming or fish-ing income, or anyone with complex deductions may be deemed ineligible for this service.
Additionally, the pro-gram is unable to prepare final returns for deceased persons, and other limi-tations may apply.
By the last day of tax season, Canadians will spend between $4 billion and $5.8 billion prepar-ing and filing personal income tax returns, with the average cost per per-son being $215, accord-ing to a study by the Fra-ser Institute.
Regardless of income level, along with tax sea-son come the tax scams that can bring a heap of trouble to anyone filing a return.
The Trail RCMP Crime Prevention Of-fice is asking ratepayers to be on the lookout for the scams that can en-ter households through a telephone line or via email.
Police are warning people in the area to steer clear of emails that look like they are from the Ca-nadian Revenue Agency and especially don’t open attachments or click links within the email.
Canada Revenue Agency does not contact taxpayers through email and wouldn’t request in-formation they should already have.
“Typically, these mes-sages advise the recipient that they have qualified for a tax refund and need to click a link to enter their information,” notes Gordon Sims from the Crime Prevention Office in Trail.

Ford an Expedition to eleganceThe popular Ford Expedi-tion gets a makeover this model year, bringing this 2015 version into a differ-ent class of elegance.
Looks:A completely updated front end aligns itself with the Super-Duty and the new F150.I like the look of the grille, large and in charge. The featured projector style headlamps with LED fog lights made the front end of the Platinum Edition tester look like a piece of jewelry!A raised power dome hood and nice bodylines certainly give this Expedition some class. The power retractable running boards are standard on this edition but I find they react too slowly for me when the door is opened. No doubt for some the boards would be a great addition while others might think of them being in the way. When you design a sport utility vehicle, it is always tough to give the back end some shape. As an engineer, you’re wor-ried about aerodynamics but in this case the designers still managed to match the back’s elegance to that of the front.
In The Cab:As you open the door, you are greeted by ambient lighting that can be customized with a selection of colors. The Platinum has leather seats, leather door trim and console accented by wood inlays. The dash is hand warped and stitched giving this cabin a very upscale look. The front bucket seats are heated and cooled. The second row folds flat along with the third row, which drops at the touch of a button. The command center controls everything from entertainment to climate.
Speaking of entertainment, the sound system is a Sony premium audio system that features 12 speakers and 390 watts of power.Safety first:Front seat mounted side airbags, safety canopy system with three row-side curtain airbags and rollover sensor. Advance-Trac with roll stability, tire pressure monitoring system, and trailer sway control are just some of the standard features.Roadworthy:The Expedition delivers on space, com-fort and functionality while driving like
a smaller SUV. Very little, if any, body roll. Steering is magnificent and easy, and responsive while changing lanes and finding a tight parking space.
Verdict:The upgrade this vehicle has received raises the quality, safety, and comfort to a new level.
Power:This vehicle comes standard with a twin turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed se-lect shift. 4.10 gear ratio. Towing is made easy by the transmission tow/haul mode, which helps keep you from gaining too much speed when towing downhill. The engine maintains its power band while towing up a hill keeping the speed and momentum constant.
Pump frequency:1w6.2 / 11.8 L/100 km (city/highway) Warranty support:Basic, 4 years/80,000 km. Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited distance.Powertrain, 6 years/110,000 km.Safety restraint, 5 years/100,000 km.Roadside Assistance, 5 years/100,000 km.Sticker price:XLT $49,299, Limited $63,399, Platinum $65,399.

100% ELECTRIC
NISSAN LEAFPresented by
SCRAP-IT
The all-electric Nissan LEAF tells white lies!
The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week.I’ll explain. I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres. Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way, because electric power offers instant tire squealing torque if you press the pedal to the metal. But that’s not me. Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head
is swelling. The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak.I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling
down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery. On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and
40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun.Next week: More on the joy of driving electric.

Towing a trailer just might be one of the most stressful driving situations for some truck owners. For one thing, it is not easy to manouevre around corners and change lanes with that extra length behind your truck. Backing up can be challenging. And towing up a steep hill can be tough on your truck. Whether you tow a boat, car, snowmobiles, or motorcycles, custom truck accessories can make towing less nerve-wracking.Don’t Tow Too Much WeightPulling too much weight can be very dangerous. Check your owner’s manual to find your vehicle’s towing capacity, in-cluding the maximum gross trailer weight
and tongue weight it can handle. Tongue weight is the downward force exerted on the hitch ball by the trailer coupler. In most cases, it is about 10 to 15 percent of gross trailer weight. Tongue weight of up to 300 pounds can be measured on a household scale by resting the trailer coupler on the scale and placing the scale on a box so that the coupler is at its normal towing height. The trailer must be fully loaded and level.Use the Right Hitch and Other EquipmentJust as each vehicle has a maximum tow-ing capacity so too does each trailer hitch, hitch ball, ball mount and safety chain. To tow safely, make sure every component you use is ready to handle the weight of your fully loaded trailer. Remember, your tow-ing capacity is equal to the capacity of the
weakest link in the system.Choosing a Trailer HitchAll trailer hitches feature a class rating, as well as a weight rating, so be sure the hitch can accommodate the loaded trailer. For instance, Reese Class 2 (avg $159) hitches have a maximum rated capacity of 350 pounds tongue weight and 3,500 pounds gross trailer weight. Class IV (avg $175) receiver-style hitches have a maximum ca-pacity of 1,200 pounds tongue weight and 12,000 pounds gross trailer weight. If you need more towing capacity than the traditional receiver-style weight distribut-ing hitch, then you need to step up to a fifth-wheel or gooseneck hitch. Prices start at $650.

Choosing a Hitch BallIf you have a drawbar style hitch, the hitch ball usually is built right into it. But if you have a receiver-style hitch, you’ll need to choose your own hitch ball.Like vehicles and trailer hitches, hitch balls also are assigned a maximum tongue weight and gross trailer weight rating. Hitch balls are made from a variety of mate-rials, and some are available in a choice of finishes, including chrome. They cost about $12 to $14.The hitch ball diameter must be the same di-ameter as the trailer coupler (1 7/8 inches, 2 inches or 2 5/16 inches). The shank diameter of the hitch ball should be the same as the hole diameter in the ball mount.
The shank length should be long enough to allow at least two threads to be visible when the hitch ball is installed and the nut com-pletely tightened.Load Your Trailer ProperlyRule of thumb is roughly two-thirds (60 to 66 percent) of the gross load weight should be positioned toward the front half of the trailer. Place large or heavy objects on the trailer first. Tie these objects down securely and from several angles to ensure they do not shift. Pack remaining items in a manner that maintains balance of the trailer. Once the trailer is loaded, double-check the posi-tioning and stability of the cargo. Better safe than [email protected]

For as long as Alexandra Straub recalls, she has loved cars. She can even remember thinking at the age of six, “Only ten more years until I can get my licence!”Born in Zurich, Switzerland to Hungarian parents, she moved to Canada when she was just a baby.Spending her summers in Budapest with her grandparents helped cultivate a strong liking for motorsports. Alexandra can remember watching F1 races with her grandfather, and still does even when she goes to visit.Over a decade ago, Alexandra started her career in the automotive industry. Since then, she has had countless stories and photos published. You can fi nd her work online, in newspapers, magazines and on television. She has hosted “Shifting Gears Automotive TV” and regularly makes appearances on various shows talking about, you guessed it, all things automotive. When she’s not testing out the latest in vehicular goodness, you’ll either fi nd her on a motorcycle (she tests and writes about those, too), on a track or traveling the world. While she considers her “job” her hobby, Alexandra enjoys other activities that don’t necessarily involve wheels, engines or motors. Growing up on the North Shore of Vancouver, she loves the mountains and the ocean. An avid snowboarder and a wannabe surfer, count on her enjoying the outdoors when she has the chance. And to really help her relax, she scrapbooks.Share your thoughts and requests with Alexandra [email protected]

SOCIAL WORK WEEK IN BRITISH COLUMBIA CELEBRATES THE ACCOMPLISHMENTS OF
THE SOCIAL WORKERThe provincial government has declared March 8th – 14th Social Work Week in British Columbia, and social workers throughout BC have planned activities that will highlight their essential contribution to the health and well-being of British Columbians. Social workers provide their services in hospitals, child welfare programs, community service agencies, family
service centres, mental health clinics, rehabilitation centres, community action programs, schools and universities, correctional institutions, long term care homes, alcohol and drug treatment programs, hospices and employee assistance programs. They make substantial contributions to social policy and research. And hundreds of Registered Social Workers in BC provide private practice clinical counselling services. Social workers continue to make the world a better place, one person, one family, one challenge at a time. Take time to acknowledge and celebrate the social workers you know!

The all-new Morgan Aero 8 draws its design inspiration from the popular British roadsters from the 1960s.But the similarities between the new 8 and those cars from the past ends with the looks because the Aero 8 is reliable! –
It’s powered by a BMW V8 engine capable of propelling the two-seater from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Prices later but it won’t be available here – [email protected]

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has driven dozens of cars in his 40-plus movies. Here are the top five coolest cars fea-tured in movies:“Vanilla Sky”: In this reality warp-ing, romantic drama, Tom plays David Aames — the head of a New York publishing firm with access to what-ever he pleases. In the opening scene, Cruise drives a Ferrari 250 GTO replica through a deserted New York City, ulti-mately ending in Times Square. Aames’ daily driver throughout the film is a1967 Ford Mustang, and after he falls in love with a different woman, his ex-girlfriend Julie (played by Cameron Diaz) tries to kill them both by driving off a bridge in her 1970 Buick Skylark.“Rain Man”: After his father’s death, Charlie Babbitt (played by Cruise), a grey market sports car dealer (seen import-ing Countaches in the film’s opening), flies home to Ohio to settle the estate. After learning he has an older brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is in-heriting the full estate, the two set out on a cross-country road trip back to California in their father’s 1949 Buick Roadmaster.“Jack Reacher”: Tom plays Jack Reacher, an ex-Army MP who is investigating the murder of five innocent victims of a sniper shooting. The real highlight of the film is a six-minute car chase in
which Cruise drives a 1970 Chevelle SS. He tries his best to chase down an Audi A6 while being pursued by police. The driving stunts are of quite a remarkable quality; especially considering Cruise did all of his own driving throughout the movie.“Risky Business”: In this 1983 dark-comedy drama, Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high school student living with wealthy parents in suburban Chica-go. His parents go away on a trip, giving Joel strict orders to not touch the stereo system or his father’s 1979 Porsche 928. Joel’s unruly friend convinces him other-wise, leading Joel into a downward spi-ral of trouble that includes a car chase in
the Porsche, and later some major water damage.“War of the Worlds”: Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker in New York City. His pride and joy seems to be his 1966 Shelby GT350H rather than his two kids — this all changes after an alien invasion of Earth. The probability of an alien invasion seems just as un-likely as a decidedly unmotivated N.Y. dockworker owning such a rare car as a Shelby! – But then this is the movies.Nick Gravlin writes for Hagerty Insurance. Hagerty is the world’s leading specialist provider of classic car and boat insurance. Learn more at hagerty.ca.

Spring showers certainly may bring flower laters on, but they also contribute to challenging driving condi-tions. Early spring weather can be fickle, vacillating be-tween dry, wet and even icy conditions. Drivers need to remain on their toes to safely traverse roadways near and far.
Wet roadways and poor driving conditions contrib-ute to thousands of road accidents each and every year. As roads get wet, oil and other substances rise to the surface of the pavement, which can quickly become slippery and compromise the traction offered by tires. According to the United States Department of Transportation, there are around 707,000 automobile crashes each year due to rain.
Heavy rains also may lead to puddles, which can ob-scure hazards on the roadway. Cars may stall out in puddles or hydroplane, which occurs when cars coast
along the surface of the water. Puddles also can be splashed by oncoming cars, leading to visibility issues.
It is in every driver’s best interest to use caution when driving on wet roads. The following tips can help prevent accidents, injuries and even fatalities during the rainy season.
· Slow down. Drivers should drive slower when roads are wet and when rain compromises visibility. It can take up to three times longer to stop on a wet road than a dry one. By slowing down you will be able to stop or veer out of the way of danger.
· Leave room. When driving on wet roads, leave more room between your vehicle and the one in front of you. Again, this plays into stopping distance. Tailgat-ing increases your risk of rear-ending a vehicle if you cannot stop in time on a wet roadway.
· Stay alert. It can be easy to be lulled into compla-
cency while driving. But staying alert and conscious of every detail going on around you can reduce your risk of accident when driving in less than ideal conditions.
· Skip cruise control. As a driver, you want to remain in control of acceleration and speed, rather than leav-ing it up to the cruise control system. If you begin to hydroplane on cruise control, the car may actually speed up.
· Use your headlights. Headlights can light up the road in front of you, helping illuminate potential haz-ards. Lights on a car also make your vehicle more vis-ible to others on the road. Always turn on the head-lights in inclement weather.
· Avoid jerky movements. Keep a steady pace and the vehicle in control. Jerking the wheel or accelerating and braking in a erratic fashion can cause the vehicle to spin out or skid on wet roads.
· Check your tires. Inspect your tires for tread wear and air pressure. Tires should be rotated as part of rou-tine maintenance. Poorly performing tires are a signifi-cant safety risk. If you live in an area known for a lot of rain, invest in tires designed for wet road conditions.
Don’t let wet weather get the best of you. Slow down, stay visible and be on the alert.

Place names
Eighty-ninth in an alphabeti-cal series on West Kootenay/Boundary place names
Last week we began looking at the origins of Howser, one of the most puzzling and convo-luted local place names.
We got as far as April 23, 1900 when W.D. Mackay sur-veyed a new townsite on Lot 528 for William Simpson and Shir-ley Keeling, previously known as Duncan City. This time they called it Hauser.
The streets were Spokane, Nelson, Kaslo, Denver, Slocan, Lardo, Duncan, Water, Simpson, Shirley, Keeling, Sandon, Hall, Reno, Abbey, Ward, Forbes, Nagle, and Wallace. The lone avenue was called Hauser, as was the lake shown on the map.
Why was this spelling used instead of the far more common Howser?
Paul and Marion Howser of Reigate, Surrey, England have given this a lot of thought dur-ing a more than 30-year search for answers. Their best guess is that it was to help secure the terminus for the Great North-ern Railway’s Kaslo and Lardo-Duncan line — the townsite
plan shows the proposed rail-way passing through the town. However, it was never built.
The Great Northern was fa-miliar with the spelling Hauser because it had a station at Haus-er Junction in northern Idaho (which we’ll discuss further in the next installment).
Simpson and Keeling used the spelling Hauser despite the fact the post office had been renamed Howser only four months earlier.
The postal application, sub-mitted in June 1899, was under the name Duncan. It was ap-proved and opened on Sept. 1 of that year, but William Simpson, originally proposed as postmas-ter, was passed over in favor of W.V. Bradshaw.
The postmaster general soon complained “that inconvenience has been caused by the similar-ity of the name of the Duncan post office, recently established … to that of the Duncan’s Sta-tion post office.”
The Nelson Tribune of March 12, 1900 commented: “It seems that the post office officials can’t see the difference between Dun-cans on Vancouver Island and Duncan City up the lake. Some-times the letters to the island place come up here and vice
versa. So the official name of the little lake town is hereafter to be Howser.”
The change took effect Jan. 1, 1900.
In an interview published in Where the Lardeau River Flows, resident Billy Clark exagger-ated a bit when he said: “Our post office was Duncan Lake and all the mail used to go to Duncan on Vancouver Island so they changed it to Hauser and then all our mail went to Bowser. And we got it changed to Howser which is the name today and now it goes to Fernie and all over the country.”
In 1905, William Simpson, who took over as postmaster a year after the office opened,
told the Geographic Survey of Canada the original spelling was Hauser and that when the post office’s name changed from Duncan, “the then postmas-ter in writing the department spelled it Howser, so it remains to this day.”
The evidence, however, is that the name had been widely spelled Howser, including on Simpson’s own survey plan for Lot 528, completed 13 years earlier.
The post office moved in 1966 prior to completion of the Duncan dam, which flooded much of the original townsite. It closed in 1969.
Next: Who was Howser’s namesake?

This letter was postmarked at Howser in 1937. The post office actually opened as Duncan in 1899, but was soon renamed be-cause mail was being missent to Vancouver Island.
Preparing your taxes
in Trail. “The link takes the person to a bogus website and requires the visitor to enter personal identifica-tion. CRA will not contact you via email.”
Sims also wants those who do their taxes online to be careful and guard against identity theft.
“If you are doing your own taxes online, don’t use a public wireless connection,” he wrote. “Even the latest wireless security encryp-tion standards can be risky, so use a wired connection when dealing with sensitive financial and personal infor-mation.”
Anyone with questions regarding tax scams or emails from the CRA should contact them at 1-800-959-8281 to verify the authentici-ty of an information request.
