Welcome to our 39th year of bringing affordable, world-class music to diverse audiences in Southern New Jersey. The West Jersey Chamber Music Society

professional orchestra and chorale continue to perform great classical compositions, led by Music Director, Joel Krott.

Thanks to the consistent support of sponsors like CareKinesis, Whitesell, ATL Corp, ASL Transportation, Zook Dinon, and an amazing grant from Holman Enterprises we are making a big push this year to diversify and expand our audiences further. This initiative begins with our first concert Music by Teens for Teens Family Concert in October and continues throughout the year, especially with the Music Transcends concert in celebration of Black History Month. The Holman grant will also allow us to increase the number of complimentary tickets to people of modest means, children, students, seniors and the disabled.

We are also organizing three after-concert receptions so that new members can meet the musicians and other members of the WJCMS community. Even our Holiday Party and Fundraiser has a new theme built around the Nutcracker ballet that we hope will attract more families. For all our events children and teens enter free.

We invited you to visit our website for more details on our concerts and musicians www.wjcms.org; and join our online community https://www.facebook.com/WJCMSOCIETY to keep up-to-date on classical music news from around the US and the world.

Enjoy!

The commitment to these high standards in music begins with Artistic Director Joel Krott. A graduate of the Philadelphia Music Academy, Mr. Krott has studied and traveled throughout Europe, including extensive musical research with renowned masters from the Royal

Conservatory of Copenhagen and the Vienna Conservatory. He has expertly and graciously guided the West Jersey Chamber Music Society ensemble from its inception in 1980, creating 39 seasons of music that

challenge and inspire both supporters and musicians.

This year Joel will be taking his youth choir on a concert tour to Denmark, Sweden and Germany. Join him and his choir on Saturday

November 17 at 7.30pm for a benefit concert when skilled musicians of all ages, who have gone or will be going on the concert tour to Europe,

will share their musical gifts with songs and instrumental pieces of many styles. The offering will benefit choir members on scholarship.

PROGRAM NOTES

MUSIC BY TEENS FOR TEENS BY TEENS

The pieces in this varied program are youthful (written in the early years encompassing their teens), and exemplify the exuberance of the youth of their composers. They were written as pieces designed for mature audiences — but also

as encouragement to young artists about learning the fundamentals of their art and shows that almost anything is attainable with hard work and perseverance.  One of the goals of this concert is to attract and appeal to young listeners and that’s why we have chosen these lively compositions.  These pieces also are accessible to and enjoyable for young listeners and those learning to enjoy classical music

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart (Austrian 1756-1791). Mozart was widely recognized as one of the greatest composers in the history of Western music. Considered a child prodigy, he began composing and playing intricate and celebrated compositions a very young age. But although he is considered a genius, there was another side to Mozart – he had an incredibly bawdy sense of humor with a penchant for remarkably childish behavior! This great composer and musician was also a devoted son, a kind brother, a hard-working music student and husband and father. He loved his mother dearly, he loved his animals (a fox terrier and a starling), and he loved billiards!

Mozart as a child travelled to the courts of Europe to show his virtuosity on the piano and violin; what he wrote was often based on themes or early works from earlier composers. Fortunately, his scores have been mostly saved and recorded, so his development can be traced and heard. He went to excel in all types of classic music, both laic and secular, and his early death at 37 robbed us of a potential contest with the young Beethoven.

Symphony No. 13 in F major, K. 112, by Mozart, was written in Milan during the autumn of 1771 (age of 15). The symphony is in four movements, the second of which is scored for strings alone. The third movement minuet may have been written earlier, and then incorporated into the symphony—the autograph manuscript shows the minuet copied in his father’s hand. One critic describes Symphony No. 13 as the last in "conventional mode"—thereafter "we are in the beginnings of a different world”; the days of building on other’s music are gone.

The instrumentation was: strings, two oboes, two horns, bassoon, continuo:

Allegro, Andante, Menuetto — Trio,   Molto allegro.

Symphony 23. Mozart spent many of his teen years in the lovely city of Salzburg in the employ of the Archbishop, where he finished several symphonies, including Symphony No. 23 in D major, K.181/162b – dated as complete on May 19, 1773.  It is sometimes called "Overture", even though the autograph score bears the title “Sinfonia". This was among the pieces his father took to Vienna, but was unable to obtain a sponsor for performance. The symphony has the scoring of two oboes, two horns, two trumpets, and strings. He wrote the symphony as a single uninterrupted movement consisting of three distinct tempi:

1. Allegro spiritoso 2. Andantino grazioso 3. Presto assai

Like the symphonies that preceded and followed it, it’s played attacca in the manner of an Italian opera overture. Indeed, the opening Allegro spiritoso is, with its fanfares and chord changes and arpeggios, is more about scoring than it is about themes and modulations. The central Andantino in triple time is a siciliano (dance from Sicily) with the solo oboe singing sweetly above the murmuring strings. The closing Presto assai is a rondo with a contradanse main theme that is almost too quick to be danced, alternating with graceful and ghostly episodes that end with a conventional final cadence.

Symphony No. 30. Mozart wrote Symphony No. 30 in D major in Salzburg, completing it on May 5, 1774. The work is scored for two oboes, bassoon (not in the performance) two horns, two trumpets, timpani and strings. The timpani part has been lost over the years. The work is in four movements. 1. Molto allegro 3. Menuetto and Trio 2. Andantino con moto 4. Presto

The first movement is in sonata form and opens with a falling, dotted fanfare motif. A transitional section follows which contains a dialogue between violins and bass alternating between loud and soft dynamics and ending with a trill. The second theme group of the sonata-form structure contains two sections.

The first is a landler (German peasant dance) scored for two violins against bass while the second is a minuet for all featuring trills on almost every beat. The expositional coda returns to the ländler style. The development focuses on the minuet-style with the phrase-lengths elongated. Following the recapitulation, the movement coda returns to this minuet and regularizes its phrase-lengths before the final cadence. In the trio of the minuet, the first violin is syncopated an eighth-note ahead of the accompaniment. The finale starts off with a falling dotted fanfare motif similar to the one that starts the opening movement. The answering phrase and the movement's second theme have a contradanse quality (a folk dance in which couples face each other in two lines or a square.)

Franz Schubert (1797-1828). Schubert was born near Vienna, not long after Mozart died. Like Mozart, Schubert had an amazing ability to create music in his head. He began composing at age eleven and had written his first symphony by sixteen. When only nineteen years old, Schubert paid homage to his great predecessors, Mozart and Hadyn, with a charming classical symphony, his Fifth Symphony in B-flat major. Schubert may be the least understood of the great composers. For decades after he died in 1828, at the age of thirty-one, most of Schubert’s work was unknown. And when hundreds of Schubert’s compositions were first published in the late 1800’s, romantic legends about the composer suddenly became popular. Schubert was often described as a tortured but amiable genius--a nearsighted, portly cherub of a man who lived in abject poverty and found comfort only in a glass of wine.

misunderstand creativity, for often the roots of later greatness are found in an artist’s early pieces. Many of Schubert’s earlier compositions suffered from the prejudice of longer is better and later compositions are the best! Schubert is regarded as a miniaturist and sometimes not taken as seriously as he should be. That his creative impulses found their outlet in smaller works does not affect the quality of the compositions themselves. These pieces are imbued with vitality, freshness and exuberance of youth.

The pieces were written in 1813  (16 years old) and are thought to have been for quartet, but usually, now , played by string ensembles.  They were chosen for this program to  hear music from Schubert’s teen years that were for a  limited sized orchestra. These catchy little Minuets and Trios from 1813 are quite simple. While they are far from major works, we see the development of various features that were later to appear in Schuberts quartets and an obsessiveness with a wide range of surprising key relationships.

“Another interesting feature of the early quartets, especially as he later abandoned it, is the use of clear thematic links between movements or indeed within them, be it a rhythmic figure or the contour of a melody, or a combination of the two. Also each quartet explores new territory and have exquisite string features. We also note that Schubert is already using C major, a key that is bright and ceremonial, as the basis for a work of seriousness and depth. In these quartets we can feel a master in the making, a genius about to bloom”.

Felix Mendelssohn (1809-1847) enjoyed a classical upbringing in Northern Germany and was given a sound musical training. He made his first major mark with music for “A Midsummer’s Night Dream” and an Octet for Strings. He wrote in all media except opera, was a fine conductor, and was mainly responsible for re-introducing Bach to contemporary audiences. He died at 47, only two years after the death of his talented sister, Fanny, whose own music is receiving its own revival.

Sinfonia No. 3 (String Symphony) in e minor for 2 Violins, 2 Violas, Cello & BassFelix Mendelssohn's String Symphony No. 3 in e minor dates from 1821 at which time he was 12 years old. It is the third of the so-called string symphonies he wrote between 1821 and 1823. Although No.3 was, like the others, an assignment in counterpoint from his composition teacher, it is nonetheless a finished work with a sense of humor, and competent use of the violins, perhaps presaging his two violin concertos.

The first and last moments show his knowledge of the contrapuntal and fugal writing of J. S. Bach - not surprising as his teacher's gods of composition were Johann Sebastian Bach, Mozart and Haydn and it was these three composers who served as the young Mendelssohn's models for his string symphonies. These have different combinations of strings.

It is ironic that while none of these early sinfonia as he called them were intended to be played by the massed string section of a modern symphony orchestra or even the size of today's chamber orchestra, that is the only way these works seem to be heard. The title of Sinfonia was given because of the style rather than the number of players he intended for the work. These lovely pieces for not more than six players were meant for home use and for musical soirees.
