Dear Burger Families and Friends: This month brings with it the end of the first marking period of the school year. That’s right - more than a quarter of the school year is already behind us. November is a big month for us and our partnership with our students and their families. We believe schools work best when information is shared and opportunities are provided for us to communicate together. With communication in mind, here are some things that will take place this month that will help facilitate that communication:

● The first marking period ends Wednesday, November 7. I am sure that many of you routinely check your student’s progress via SchoolTool but if not, it is a remarkable resource for you to take advantage of here in R-H. In addition to you using SchoolTool we also encourage all of our students to log in and check their progress multiple times throughout the quarter as well.

● Report cards will be mailed home on Monday, November 19.

● Parent-teacher conferences are scheduled for Monday, November 19 and Tuesday, November 20. Please be on the lookout for our mailing providing information on how to sign up for a parent-teacher conference this year.

I’ll end this month of “giving thanks” by saying thank you for the opportunity to work with our students each and every day at school. I know I speak on behalf of our entire staff when I say that we appreciate all the hard work and support you provide to our students. Your efforts are reflected here at school - as we have an amazing group of young people on campus every day. That doesn’t just happen by itself, and we fully recognize that. It is our hope that our students enjoy coming to our school as much as we enjoy having them here every day. Thanks for sending us such great kids. Happy Thanksgiving! Greg Lane Principal P.S. Don't forget - there is no school for students the week of November 19 - 23, 2018. I know our students are thankful for that good news!

Winter sports are almost here. Varsity and Jr. Varsity sports begin November 5; Modified A and Modified B sports begin November 13. If your child is interested in playing a winter sport, they must hand in the following information to the health office:

Physicals - Each student who participates in sports must have a complete physical exam signed by a licensed practitioner dated within one year of the beginning of the sport on file in the health office. A physical is good for 12 months through the last day of the month in which it was completed. Interval Health History - This form must be completed and signed by a parent or guardian prior to the first day of practice for all sports. ALL information is required to be completed, please do not leave any blanks as this may delay the process to clear your child for a sport. An interval Health History form is required for EACH sport your child plays. If your child has any medical conditions, please follow the steps below:

Page 6: West Henrietta, N.Y. 14586 Burger Junior High School...West Henrietta, N.Y. 14586 Burger Junior High School Important Contact Information Mr. Lane, Principal 359-5308 Nov. Alicia Alley,

If your child has Asthma, the additional following forms are required prior to sports clearance: Permission for the use of Medications signed by a licensed practitioner on

file in the health office. If your physician determines your child is responsible to self-medicate, it is the responsibility of the student to have their medication with them at all times. If your physician does not determine your child responsible to self-medicate, it is the responsibility of the parent to supply the coach with the medication. Medications cannot be taken from the health office and used for sports.

An Asthma Action Plan signed by a licensed practitioner on file in the health office.

If your child has a life threatening allergy requiring medications, the additional following forms are required prior: Permission for the use of Medications signed by a licensed practitioner on

If your physician does not determine your child responsible to self-medicate, it is the responsibility of the parent to supply the coach with the emergency medication. Medications cannot be taken from the health office and used for sports.

Emergency Care Plan signed by the parent/guardian

If your child sustained an injury or had an extended illness prior to the beginning of the sport, the following additional information is required: An updated physician clearance is required stating the date the student

may resume normal physical activities and sports.

A tetanus vaccine is required every 10 years for each student playing interscholastic sports.

Welcome to the 2018-19 Spelling Bee season!

This year we have exciting news! R-H is once again aligned with the Scripps National Spelling Bee, which means the top speller at Burger has a chance to go on and compete on the national stage in Washington, D.C. next May. What does this year's Spelling Bee look like? Students should see Mrs. Yochum or stop by room A-25 to receive the Google classroom code. Study lists are posted to the official Burger Spelling Bee classroom page. These words will help you prepare for our building ORAL SPELLING BEE which will be held after school on Thursday, January 24, 2019, in the Burger Library. The top four building spellers will each receive a prize and the overall champion will move on to the next level of competition, “The Western New York Regional Spelling Competition” in Batavia, NY (specific date in March TBA).
