Merry Christmas andwelcome to the last month of 2014.Where did the year go? Theholidays with family and friendsalways bring special memories thatwill be cherished for a lifetime. Thisis the season for giving. Whetherit’s the time honored tradition ofgifts around the Christmas tree orspare coins given to the bell tollingSanta of the Salvation Army, Theact of giving will never go away.Though over the years, this greattrait has really become overcommercialized. Everything frombillboards to television promoting“buy me”. Nonetheless, the greatfeeling and or joy we get when givingis hardly by chance. SonjaLyubomirsky P.H.D. at StanfordUniversity ran an experiment onjust this subject. She set up twogroups. One assigned with the taskof doing five kindly deeds one dayout of the week for six weeks andthe other doing nothing. Shereports that participants assignedto commit five acts of kindnesswere happier than participantsassigned to a no-action controlgroup. Similarly, spending moneyon others leads to higher levels ofhappiness than spending money ononeself in North America andaround the world. Simply put, Givingbrings joy and happiness. Let’s justnot fall in the trap of making onlythis time of year the only time.Happiness can be achieved all yearround. Volunteer your time to thepoor. Give to that special charity.Take those Christmas cookies downthe street to the less fortunatefamily. Take a toy down to the FireDept who distributes to orphanages.Pablo Picasso with no doubt put itbest … “The meaning of life is tofind your gift. The purpose of lifeis to give it away”
May your holidays befilled with joy and your New Yearbe the happiest and healthiest ever
.But when you give to the
needy, do not let your left handknow what your right hand is doing,4 so that you’re giving may be insecret. And your Father who sees insecret will reward you. Matthew6:3-4
News and notes from the chair ofBrotherly Love. Happy Holidays:the time of the year we all loveand “hate”! It only happens oncea year- thank God! Are you readyfor all the “madness”?
December will prove to be anactive time at the club. Mondaynight football continues and therace for playoff spots are startingto heat-up. Steve Martin and hissquad make sure everyone has awonderful experience. This is onenight you can let them do it allfor you, so to speak! The 6th isour monthly Birthday Bash hereat the Elks. As you know, thesenights have proven to be awonderful time to share somelove with the birthday “babies”!Don’t forget Karaoke Wednesday.Keith Kelly and his Jack of Spadesgame is also part of this night.Keith is raising lots of moneythrough this contest. Who knows, you might hit the Jack and usethat money for Christmas! Onceagain, a big thanks goes out toGus and Nancy Kane for theirwork on Thursday night Bingo! The money they raise helps theclub in so many ways!
The twenty first of December iswinter Solstice in the NorthernHemisphere. This is the day thathas the fewest hours of day light.Starting the following day, lightstarts to increase a minute or soeach day until the twenty first ofJune -the summer Solstice. Thelongest day of light. The wordslight and dark have always beensymbolic of good/evil, positives/negative, in other words:opposites. This appears to be whyChristmas is closely linked to thistime period. For Christians, Jesusbirth represents the return of lightor truth about God’s plan for usall. Love or Brotherly Love playsa significant role in Jesus’ ministryhere on earth. This holiday seasonlet us share a little more love/lightwith one another!
In closing, perhaps Martin LutherKing said it best, “Darknesscannot drive out darkness; onlylight can do that. Hate cannotdrive out hate; only love can dothat.” I hope the light ofChristmas shines on you all!

Dear Members,I would like to thank all our members that have opened their heartsand devotion to our nation’s Veteran’s and active duty military. This year we together have raised monies and given from our homesand hearts to show them that we love them and are thankful as Elksand Americans. You have lived up to our orders pledge of, “Solong as there are veterans, the Benevolent and Protective Orderof Elks will never forget them.” I thank you. As we enter theholidays that are hardest for all service members that are awayfrom their families, let us keep them and their families in ourthoughts and prayers. Last month was Veterans RemembranceMonth and we honored our Lodge’s vets with an appreciationdinner. It was a warm gathering of our veterans, family and friends. We have many unique members that have served our country anddeserve our thanks. Remember December 7th, 1941. The day ournation entered into a war that was long and costly. One hundredthousand Elks served in WWII and one thousand six hundredmade the ultimate sacrifice. Honor them. In closing I would giveto you a prayer for a safe and Merry Christmas to you and yourloved ones and a Happy New Year. Thank you for your service.
Respectfully,Micahel J. Salazar (PER)Veterans ChairmanUSN(Retired)
Seasons Greetings to Brother and Sister Elks,
It’s that time of year again and we are looking forward toHolidays with family and friends. We still need the rain but atleast it has been somewhat cooler. We continue to make progress on our Lodge repairs andreplacement of some of our equipment. Our building is oversixty years old and we do realize that certain repairs becomenecessary we don’t need the extra expenses. We should be ableto keep up these expenses as needed. We needed to replace two stainless steel carts in the kitchenfor the cooks and service staff. We are also in the process ofbuilding a new cabinet for our linens in our service staff area. Both items needed to be replaced. The trustees hope that the new soap and paper toweldispensers are working OK for our members. We also made someother changes and repairs that you should see in the near future. We received another load of mulch for our planting areas, ifanyone has some time we could use some help to spread this andpull some weeds. We also have a few dead bushes and some treesthat should be removed. [Sprinklers still need to be checked andmake sure they work properly.] Thank you Emblem members and all other volunteers foryour help and support. Please help us to thank all those we seehelping our Lodge activities. Trustees Jerry Warren-Yolanda Garcia-Don Backofen-Dannie Parker-Gus Kane
My Brothers and Sisters in Elkdom,
As we come to a close of this year’s efforts to provide America’s youth with the tools to besuccessful students, I am happy to report that we provided 3,098 Dictionaries to thecommunities surrounding our Lodge. It was a rewarding project to deliver our gift and tointeract with the students and staff. All the children were so appreciative and the Teacherscould not praise this program and our members enough for showing that we truly do care andshare ourselves and resources. I have followed up with many of the schools and it has beenreported that the children proudly show off their dictionaries and carry them to and from classdaily. Our office has been receiving thank you cards, posters and letters from the variousschools and has been displaying them. If you would like to see more come into the office andyou may view them and read the kind and thoughtful messages from the students. Our ExaltedRuler, the Bingo Team and our members are what made this project a big success. You can takegreat pride in what you have accomplished, Thank you.
Fraternally,
Michael J Salazar (PER)Dictionary Chairman

My Brothers and Sisters in Elkdom,December is going to be a busy month with the Holiday hustle and bustlethat comes this time of year. We hope that you all will be safe and enjoythe gathering of friends and family this year. It is also that time when ourLodge will be collecting and going through this year’s Scholarship entriesfor both ENF and CHEA. On top of that we will also be looking over theentries in this year’s Americanism Essay contest “What the Pledge ofAllegiance Means to Me”. If you would like to assist in the process thatselects awardees in any of these worthy contests I encourage you to letmyself or our Exalted Ruler know you are interested. Once we haveselected our Students they will be forwarded onto the next stage of judging. So help support our youth and donate some time to read essays, reviewstudent packages and join your fellow Elks in their efforts. In closing Iwish you and your families a Merry Christmas and a prosperous NewYear!
