Introduction

He was praying in a certain place, and after he had finished, one of his disciples said to him, “Lord teach us to pray.”… “When you pray, say:

‘Father, hallowed be your name,

Your kingdom come,

Give us each day our daily bread.

And forgive us your sins,

For we ourselves forgive everyone indebted to us,

And do not bring us to the trial.’” (Luke 11:1-4)

Fr. Barry covers . . .

• Ideas on prayer and how God communicates with us

• How we decide what comes from God in our experience and what does not, traditionally knows as the discernment of spirits

• Living with today’s dilemmas

• Who God is and what God wants in creating

• How engaging with God changes us

Why Do You Pray?

•Pause for a moment, then turn to one other person to share “why do you pray?”

• In other words, the reversal of the catastrophe of human sin comes about by the recovery of an intimate relationship with God, a relationship in which human beings once again are asked to become partners with God.

Page 14: WES Retreat 2011

The God We Believe In

… wants a relationship of intimacy and partnership with each of us and with all of us together.

… we are made for union with God, and our hearts must want that union at a very deep level.

… Why Pray?

… How to Pray?

Page 16: WES Retreat 2011

The Effects of Such Prayer

What happens when we pray in this way? Just as two friends change because of their deepening intimacy, so too a deepening intimacy with God change us. But the change comes about through the relationship itself, not through sheer will power. As we relate to God in this way, we become more like God

Our Time of Big Changes

We who have lived through any part of the twentieth century have experienced changes that go far beyond the ordinary.

We are living in a time that is as revolutionary as any in history…

• What have I experienced in my lifetime?

• How have these events and trends changed my world and worldview?

• How do I bring these experiences to my prayer?

Guidelines

For Coping with Big Change

Horn Chips Advice as we face massive, unsettling changes. . .

• He notes that in such tumultuous times we cannot predict the way ahead: “changes come that are too great to foresee, far too great to understand.”

• In all ages, not only in times of great change, men and women have had to walk forward into the future with hope and trust, not knowing precisely how things would turn out.

Page 26: WES Retreat 2011

Facing massive changes. . .

Jesus of Nazareth himself had to go to his death on the cross in faith and hope and love, not knowing how, but trusting that his Father would bring light out of this darkness: “Father, into your hands I commend my spirit” (Luke 23:46)

Horn Chips Advice as we face massive, unsettling changes. . .

• He says: “When the old ways are dead, it means that a new way is upon us. We cannot discern it yet, but it is at hand”

• Take comfort in our Christian belief, that no matter what it looks like, God has done all that is needful for the salvation of the world in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth.

Page 28: WES Retreat 2011

Moreover it will seem that all is lost

“I think we will not see the new way,” Horn Chips states. “I think it will not become visible for seven generations. In that time the hoop of the people will seem to be broken, and the flowering tree will seem to be withered.” http://www.fordesigner.com/maps//9677-0.htm

What was your path to prayer?

What happened during this prayer period?

What might you have photographed?

Page 36: WES Retreat 2011

Go Pray! If you brought a camera, you are invited to go pray with your camera. Take as many photos of God’s beautiful nature as you care to.

Think of…

• Close-ups

• At a distance

• Whatever you are inspired to photograph!

Share with a friend

God likes us and wants our friendship. God wants each of us to engage in a relationship of growing intimacy and friendship. (Barry)

What have I learned about God’s friendship with me as I reflect on God’s everyday nature?

What is this friendship like for me?

BlessingsThank you for being part of the WES Retreat.

“… we are called to believe that God’s Spirit is still active in this world, in spite of appearances, and that God will reveal the new way to those who remain faithful.” - Barry, SJ

On Eagles Wings

The only thing we can hope for is that our God image becomes more adequate to the reality of God. How can this happen?
