It has been a very busy start to term 2 and thank you to all our year 3 and 5 students for their calm approach to NAPLAN last week. NAPLAN assessments will continue across this week. Thankfully we have not experienced the types of system issues some schools across the country have experienced.

Thank You Another huge thank you to one of our parents Ms Jay who has kindly donated all of these wonderful books for our students to use in classes across the school. Thank you!

Before and After School Care Our before and after school care centre operates from 6.30am until 6.30pm every school day. For more infor-mation, please pick up a flyer at the school office.

Friday Playgroup Don’t forget our playgroup that operates every Friday from 9.15 to 11am in the before and after school care centre attached to the library. If you have a baby, toddler or pre-schooler in your care, please come along for some fun socialising.

Morning Supervision Just a reminder that morning supervision does not commence until 8.40am. Students are not to arrive at school prior to this time. Once our students enter the school grounds, they must abide by the rules of our school, including being in the correct place for morning supervision. They cannot wait outside their classrooms, even if they are with their parents. Parents are welcome to wait with their children before school, but must wait in the “in-bounds” areas. Also, please ensure that your child comes directly to school, as many students have been observed playing in the park next door unsupervised. Thank you for helping our students be “Werrington Wise.”

Car Parks Please note that for the safety of all of our students there is no access to the Heavey St or Armstein Crescent car parks to drop off or pick up students, except in exceptional circumstances and only by prior arrangement with the principal.

Teacher Professional Learning Regularly, teachers and staff undertake professional learning to keep up to date with the latest theory, research and practice in education. Many of these are held after school hours! These sessions include:

All K-2 staff participated in a session on effective feedback and LISC; 3-6 staff participated in Focus on Reading and Be You sessions; and All staff participated in EALD Progressions;

These sessions are an important way for the school and staff to keep up to date with best practice and the latest developments within the Department of Education (DoE) and the NSW Educational Standards Authority (NESA).

Have a great fortnight,

Mrs Avery Principal

Stage 3 Camp “The Great Aussie Bush Camp” Last week notes were sent home to students in Year 5 & 6 who had not returned the permission note for the Stage 3 camp. As you can understand we need to let the venue know numbers so that activities can start to be organised. Also we need to know if your child will be attending for numbers to organise the transport to the venue. If you received a note, please return it to me by Friday 24th so that we can finalise numbers. Payments for Stage 3 Camp If you have indicated on the permission slip that you will be paying the camp off in instalments, please adhere to this. Accounts will be sent home each fortnight as a reminder of how much is still outstanding. Thank you for the payments that you have made so far. If you have any issues with the payments please give me a call.

Woolworths Earn and Learn Program

Woolworths Earn and Learn has started. The Woolworths Earn and Learn program gives schools around Australia the chance to earn amazing school equipment. Between 1st May and 25th June collect as many stickers as you can and bring them into the school office and place them in the collection box. With every $10 spent at Woolworths, one sticker is collected. Last year our school collected 18300 stickers and was able to get some fantastic sports equipment for the school. So hopefully this year we can collect more stickers and receive more equipment. Looking forward to another successful campaign with the Woolworths Earn and Learn Program.

Further information can be found at: woolworths.com.au/earnandlearn

Thank you all in advance for your assistance,

Mrs Moses School Manager

Sydney Writer’s Festival

On May 3rd I was fortunate to take some of our stage 3 students to the Sydney Town hall for the writer ’s festival. The students are specially chosen by their teachers because of their interest in reading and writing. This year we heard four great authors speak about their passion for writing and how they do it, our students were very inspired. A huge thank you to Mrs LeMaire and Mrs Camilleri who accompanied the students at this event. Janette Buchan

Sport Update 2019 has continued to be an extremely successful year for Werrington Public School students in a range of sports. As mentioned in Term 1, we have had a record number of students trial and gain selection in Penrith Zone teams. These teams have now participated in their Sydney West carnivals and have achieved some excellent results:

Isabella Lopez (3/4B) – softball winners (undefeated) Alyssa Ballard (5/6H) - touch football runners up Bailey De Beus (5/6H) and Callum Potts (5/6H) – soccer winners (undefeated - without conceding a goal!). Allyrah (5/6C) and Tennyson Cashman (5/6B) – basketball winners.

District Cross Country On Wednesday 8th May, 39 of our students represented Werrington Public School at the Penrith District Cross Country carnival held at Jamison Park. These students qualified for the carnival by finishing in the top six at our school cross country carnival last term. It was extremely pleasing to witness our students conduct themselves in such a positive manner throughout the day. The level of support that they displayed for each other was especially impressive. All of our students tried their best and can be proud of their efforts. As cross country running is a sport that really tests individual resilience, I am sure that they will all gain a lot from the experience. While all students performed well, I would like to make special mention of Aliyah Waipouri, who finished 2nd in the

10 years girls, and Alyssa Ballard, who finished 6th in the 12 years girls event. As a result of this fantastic

achievement, both girls will now represent the Penrith zone at the Sydney West carnival on the 12th June. We wish

them all the very best for this event!

Possum Magic Contest Winner Last Term, the students in stage one enjoyed a very entertaining excursion to the Joan Sutherland Performing Arts Centre to see a performance of “Possum Magic”. Students were asked to enter a competition by completing the sentence “If I became invisible I would…”. Kyzar Tinania-Gulliford from K/2W was one of the lucky winners with his response. If I became invisible I would build things with Lego so people are surprised by magic. Kyzar has won a family pass for four to see a show at The Joan Sutherland Centre later in the year. Congratulations to Kyzar! We hope you enjoy another magical live performance. Mrs Watson
