T H E

HISTORIC GARDENS

Since 1730

A large part of the garden centre occupies the site of the

former kitchen garden complex built in the mid 18th

Century by the Fitzwilliams of Wentworth Woodhouse.

The gardens were subsequently developed with the

planting of orchards, ornamental and herb gardens.

Further features were added early this century by Maud,

Countess Fitzwilliam (d.1967) wife of the 9th Earl with the

creation of a beautiful Rock garden. One particularly

unusual feature of the gardens is the 'Bear Pit'.

The gardens are being substantially and faithfully

restored by ourselves as part of an ongoing process.

Recent projects have seen the replanting of the maze,

creation of a deer paddock and the re1instatement of the

pools and cascade in the rock gardens.

The success and reputation of Wentworth has been

built upon the choice and quality of plants on offer

year round to both the enthusiastic amateur and

connoisseur alike.

A large proportion of our plants for sale are produced on

site in our three acre expanding, modern nursery giving

us further control over the quality.

Furthermore we stock a comprehensive range of

gardening sundries, stoneware, landscaping, furniture,

BBQ’s, houseplants and birdcare that has to be seen

to be appreciated.

Friendly and knowledgeable staff are always on hand to

advise you on all your gardening queries making
