Anna & Sean Honoured By PMAnna and Sean Nicholas, from Much Wenlock, who run Cuan Wildlife Rescue, the only volunteer run

wildlife centre in the county to offer a round-the-clock rescue service, have been honoured by

becoming recipients of the prestigious Points of Light award, which recognises outstanding volunteers

who are making a change in their community and inspiring others. Inspired by her childhood in

Scotland, where her parents would rescue injured seabirds, Anna took over the running of the charity

in 2006 with husband Sean, to care for and rehabilitate sick, injured and orphaned wild animals and

birds. The project has grown every year with more than 3,000 wildlife casualties treated in 2018. On

top of their day jobs as firefighters, they coordinate the team of volunteers who keep Cuan Wildlife

Rescue running.

In a personal letter to the couple, Prime Minister Theresa May said: “Inspired by your childhood, you

are continuing your parents’ legacy to provide vital care and rehabilitation for wild animals and birds

through Cuan Wildlife Rescue. You should be very proud of your efforts to maintain this volunteer led,

round-the-clock rescue service which helps preserve the natural environment.”

In a statement, the couple said: “We are

delighted to have become the 1,201st and

1,202nd Point of Light recipients and honoured

to be recognised amongst other amazing

volunteers.

We would love to accept the award on behalf of

all the staff and volunteers who help run Cuan

Wildlife Rescue.

Our charity provides a vital rescue and

rehabilitation centre and service for the wildlife

of Shropshire and surrounding counties.

Our volunteers are an integral part of our team, carrying out many different roles and responsibilities,

both within the centre and in the wider community. Without their continued dedication and

commitment we would struggle to continue our work and meet the high standards that we adhere to

and expect of ourselves.”

Paper Ranks Town High In Places To LiveMuch Wenlock has been named one of the top 10 places to live across the whole of the Midlands by

a prestigious national newspaper. The picturesque Shropshire town was placed sixth in the Sunday

Times Best Places to Live in Britain Midlands category, a guide that ranks places based on a wide

range of criteria including employment, schools, culture, community spirit and local shops. Statistics

including house prices as well as on-the-ground experience of judges is also used to rate each place.

The town, which is famed for the Wenlock Olympian Games, Mary Beard and an array of magnificent

sights such as the Guildhall and Wenlock edge, did enough to impress the panel. David Turner,

Shropshire councillor for Much Wenlock, thinks there’s a lot to love about the town, He said: “There

are lots of leisure activities for people to do and there are good schools in the area. It’s an historic town

with impressive buildings. It’s convenient for the West Midlands and the coast. There is a strong sense

of community. For a certain type of home, demand is very high, but we have a shortage of smaller

properties suitable for bringing up families.” Meanwhile Paddy Ryan, of A Ryan & Son Butchers in

the town’s High Street, believes that the people are a big part of making Much Wenlock a pleasant

place to be. He said: “I think it’s quite a compliment to be named in the top 10. Wenlock has managed

to retain that sort of friendly atmosphere. It still has the feeling of an English village even though it is

classed as a small town. People talk to you when you walk down the street. You have every generation

here, there is a sense of everyone belonging together."

Housing Needs Working GroupAt the November 2018 meeting of the Town Council we welcomed Councillor Peter Nutting, the

Leader of Shropshire Council. Councillor Nutting informed us that Shropshire Council intended to

form a wholly owned Local Housing Company to provide local, affordable housing, with some for

freehold sale, on land presently owned by Shropshire Council. Members were very keen to support

this initiative and since November Shropshire Council have made headway in agreeing to form such

a company. Sites have been identified at Monkmoor, Shrewsbury, and Ifton Heath, Oswestry, with a

further five possible sites in the south of the county, which could be developed within a short time

scale, subject to planning consent

The proposals are to provide houses specifically designed for older people, housing for key workers,

first time buyers and young people needing help with housing. The housing will be at affordable

prices and the opportunity will be available to purchase dwellings. Details of what is being proposed

can be found on the Shropshire Council website (www.shropshire.gov.uk) and also in Shropshire Star

articles (www.shropshirestar.com).

Telford and Wrekin Council already operates such a housing company very successfully. This

initiative by Shropshire Council is seen as a golden opportunity for residents of this town and those

with local connections who wish to return, who are seeking new housing in Much Wenlock at an

affordable price.

In the March edition of the Herald, we announced that the Town Council had formed a working group

to look into local housing needs and asked for feedback from local people on their experiences.

Unfortunately, the response has been very poor. If the Town Council is to take part in the Shropshire

Council initiative we need to show evidence of a local need for such housing. The Town Council can

only act on an evidence base and so if you believe you could possibly benefit in some way from this

Flood Awareness EventThe Town Council and Environment Agency will be holding a Flood Awareness event on the evening

of Wednesday, 10th July at the Priory Hall. The event will commence at 7pm and everyone is

welcome. There will be a short presentation and an opportunity to raise issues and discuss concerns

about local flooding during the evening.

Ironbridge Power StationIt is now possible to view Harworth’s masterplan for the Ironbridge Power Station site and submit a

consultation response via www.ironbridgeregeneration.co.uk. The development of the site will impact

on the surrounding area, including Much Wenlock, so please take the time to view the plans and submit

your comments. On 18th June Town Councillors will be joining representatives of other nearby town

and parish councils at a meeting with Harworth to discuss traffic issues arising from the proposals.

Guildhall ExhibitionsThe Guildhall is open to the public between 11am and 4.00pm, Friday to Monday, until the end of

October. As well as having the opportunity to view the historic building and artefacts, visitors can

enjoy changing art and craft displays. From 28th June to 29th July there will be an exhibition of

paintings entitled “Much Wenlock Artists”. This will be followed by an exhibition of paintings,

jewellery and crafts by Derek and Caron Williams from 2nd to 26th August. There are also books,

cards and craft items for sale. Entry to the Guildhall is free.

Help Pours In For Threatened Wenlock Olympian GamesVolunteers have been quick to pledge their time after fears that the Wenlock Olympian Games may not

continue in their present form. The society that runs the historic event, which is the forerunner of the

modern Olympic Games, put out a plea for help earlier this week. It said that due to dwindling

numbers, there was "a real danger that the Games will not continue in their present form". However a

dozen people have already come forward to help bolster numbers. Mac Bardsley, press and PR

secretary for the Games, said: "We were in danger of not being able to run it to the same scale. Our

volunteer base diminishes year on year. This is one of those times where we need to get more people

in. We're not being alarmist. We've had a dozen people come forward already so it's been quite a

positive response." The 2019 event will be the 133rd in its long history. The society is still looking for

first royal visit to the county this

year. She also visited the Barrow

1618 Free School earlier that day.

Anna Forced To Close ShopWenlock Books, which has been on the High

Street for the last 32 years, will finish its final

chapter at the end of June. Owner Anna Dreda

believes buyers using online conglomerates

like Amazon is pricing small, independent

stores like hers out of the market. A battle

against throat cancer has also taken its toll on

Anna, who has been with the shop since the

early 1990s, and owner since 2003.

She said: "The main reason is that we just

don't have enough customers. People's

buying habits have changed. Amazon has

been running the books part of its business at

a loss for years. If I'm selling a £20 book at

£20 and they are selling it at £10, where are

people going to go?

She added "I was out of the shop with throat cancer and I was very poorly. I'm still recovering from

that. What that meant was that I had to get staff in and pay them proper salaries, when I perhaps

wouldn't have taken a proper salary. I've been lucky enough to have brilliant staff to run it in my

absence, but people would come in to see me. When I wasn't there we had a dip in sales. The real

human connections that have been made between me, the books and the people that have come to buy

them have been the most important thing of all. I have had so many messages from people saying how

much the shop has meant to them."

What’s On In TheWilliam Carries Cricket Trophy Onto PitchYoung Cricketer William Furniss, aged five, received rapturous cheers as he came out at Bristol’s

County Ground for the recent match between holders Australia and Afghanistan in the ICC World Cup.

The Brockton Primary School pupil, who plays with Cound All Stars, was one of three lucky players

picked out in a lottery from almost 30,000 nationally to get the honour of taking the trophy out.

He was joined by his father John, who joked: “As he carried the cup out I think the TV cut to an advert

break so there was no footage. His mother was waiting to watch so she was not happy.” He added:

“William did a great job. He had his white gloves on. I gave him a hand to hold it, then he put it on

the plinth. He was probably a bit daunted by it but he did really well.

It was a great day. We saw a lot of famous faces. We met Michael Atherton and had a bit of a chat with

him, which was interesting”.

John added “It was just a quick hello, I’ve come across

him before on a few occasions. It was very nice to meet

him again. He was doing the commentary by the pitch.

He wished William well. It was a great atmosphere.

William met Steve Smith and some of the Australian

team. It was very enjoyable. He enjoyed the

barracking.”

The next day it was back to normality for William’s

game with the All Stars, who might have been inspired

by the action. John said “He was very keen and wanted

to get stuck in.”

Bulldog Celebrates MilestoneWhat started out as a one-man band when company founder Ray Jordan created a caravan stabiliser in a

shed at his home in Bridgnorth in 1984. Bulldog Security Products has since moved to Much Wenlock,

and now boasts having 16 staff and is celebrating 35 years in business. The company produces security

products which continue to set the benchmark in the fight against crime in what has become a truly

international operation. Bulldog remains a family business with Mavis and Ray's son Ian now at the helm

as managing director, after spending all his working life with the firm. His brother Neil is a director, Ian's

wife Yvonne is company secretary and the next generation of Jordans is also well represented with Lucy

and Andy employed by the company. The majority of staff having given many years loyal service,

something Ian says has played a major part in the company's continued success. Ian said "We are

immensely proud of our team and the long service element means we have a wealth of experience to

draw on, our people know what the company is all about, what is required from our products and really

buy-in to the whole Bulldog ethos," he said. "People buy into people and the personal customer service

is at the heart of everything we do here at

Bulldog. Ian said the family history is

important and the success his father founded.

"Dad was an engineer and created a caravan

stabiliser in his shed back in 1984 after

deciding the dangers of towing caravans was

so serious something needed to be done about

it. The idea took off, he ended up forming his

own company. He moved his operation to a

Nissen hut in Church Lane, Bridgnorth, and

then to Much Wenlock. That Nissen hut is still

there, by the way, and being used today!

Shropshire Council attracted 120 comments from those concerned about the future of the 436

Bridgnorth-Much Wenlock-Shrewsbury service. Shropshire Council’s Cabinet has decided to shelve

the proposals, which affected several subsidised routes, and to review the current operation and future

opportunities for improved public transport services across Shropshire. I welcomed this when I spoke

at the Cabinet meeting on 12th June. I cautioned that assurance is needed that there will not be a further

threat to routes affecting Much Wenlock and Broseley. Uncertainty affects education, employment and

the local economy. Some increases in fares will be implemented on the Shrewsbury Park & Ride

service from 1st September.

Shropshire Council’s Local Plan Review - As many will know, Shropshire Council is working on its

development plans for the period up to 2036. In Much Wenlock it seems that an additional 150 homes during

that period is accepted as reasonable by many residents, although there has been considerable concern about

the proposed site for 80 houses off Bridgnorth Road, which is supported by the Town Council.

Shropshire Council’s Cabinet has now decided to conduct an additional consultation on preferred

strategic sites as part of the Local Plan Review process, including the former Ironbridge Power

Station, Clive Barracks at Tern Hill and RAF Cosford.

I addressed Shropshire Council’s Cabinet on 12th June about the impact of the regeneration of the

Ironbridge site, which may include 1,000 homes. There is insufficient space here to spell this out in

full, but locally there are concerns including traffic, schools and health facilities. I intend to cover the

from July to October 2019.

Quarry Warning For SunseekersA local Councillor has warned sunseekers against taking a dip into a disused quarry during this summer

after several recent deaths and serious injuries at other quarries. The Shadwell Quarry, has been a popular

haunt for youths during the summer months despite injuries in the last few years. The entrance was

barred in 2015 after groups of up to 20 were congregating there, but people have still been getting in.

And police issued a warning after a man was filmed jumping 60ft into the water and people have been

using social media to encourage others to go swimming and diving into the water. But Much Wenlock

Councillor David Turner said “Although the weather is fine, going near, or taking a dip is extremely

dangerous for reasons that may have never crossed your mind. Quarry water is normally far colder than

river or sea water and can send your body into shock or leave you too exhausted to swim within minutes

of jumping in. Diving into quarries could be a fatal mistake, you could get shock from the water or hit

something beneath the surface. A number of serious injuries have been caused in this way at Shadwell”.

Police Operation In Much Wenlock Over Rural ThievesA major police operation took place in Much Wenlock recently to try and clampdown at rural crime.

Officers from Broseley and Much Wenlock Safer Neighbourhood Team, the local policing sergeant,

officers from the Local Policing Priorities Team and a police dog handler were joined by two marked

patrol cars, a marked 4x4 and two unmarked patrol cars around the town on Monday. The force said

the purpose of the operation was to be a visible presence in the area of the A458, the B4368, B4378

and the B4371 following a number of burglaries targeting quad bikes, mountain bikes and power tools.

Officers took details of vehicles reported as being seen in suspicious circumstances but no further

action was taken. PCSO Mal Goddard, said: “The marked vehicles were able to provide a visible

presence and deterrence, while the unmarked vehicles were able to patrol the routes and keep an eye

out for any suspicious activity. He said in one recent case, a farmer had their quad bike and

replacement quad bike stolen within weeks of each other.

Sad News As Bear Loses FightA hedgehog who captured the hearts of the nation after losing his spikes has died. He had suffered

from an infestation of mites while he was hibernating and it is believed the irritation, infection and

stress is likely to have caused his spines and hair to fall out. The staff at Cuan gave him daily

massages and treatment with aloe vera and nursed him back to full health. But just 10 days after being

released back into the wild, Bear was back at Cuan. Messages on Cuan Wildlife Rescue's Twitter said:

"Today was such a sad day for us, and I know this may come as a shock to some of you. Our beautiful

Bear, the once-bald hedgehog whose progress I know hundreds, if not thousands, of people have been

following, finally lost his struggle to live. He had grown back a full set of new spines and had been

making a good recovery, to the point

where two weeks ago he went to a small

walled garden of our of our very loyal

supporters. "He spent a happy time there,

emerging at night and rooting around

among the plants. However, all was not

well and 10 days later he went off his food

so he came back to Cuan for re-

assessment, but two days later developed

another unusual condition. It was a hard

decision to take, but it was very evident

that to have kept him alive would have

caused him suffering and distress He was

put to sleep and it was done gently, quietly

and with dignity”.
