NOVEMBER/ DECEMER

Year 10
Message from the Deputy Principal
The wind-up of a year is also a promise of new beginnings. We are very excited to see what is
in store for 2018 but more importantly, we would say goodbye to 2017 with a boom.
The staff and students of Wembley Academy have had a whirlwind of activities to keep
them occupied. We celebrated Halloween, we went through many gruelling hours of
rehearsal for the Concert and Awards Night, we prepared and revised for our term
examinations and had lots of fun during the field trips. And through all that, there were
many occasions for camaraderie, teamwork and the occasional frustrations but through it
all, everybody came together to give their best and support one another.
Halloween was particularly memorable this year with many students both from juniors and
seniors dressing up and participating in the activities. I must give special recognition to the
organisers of this event, especially the Year 10 students for putting on a great haunted house
this year.
Before students and teachers could breathe a sigh of relief, they had to sit for their final
term exams. I witnessed many students working hard to score favourably in their exams.
Kudos to those who achieved their goals!
For the field trip this term, the seniors went through many mental and physical challenges
through mud, water and jungle – testing their perseverance and mental strength during their
two days visit to Eco-Venture. Needless to say, they were beaming at their accomplishments
at the end of the day. The field trip for the juniors proved to be equally fun. They learned a
little about husbandry and a little about farming – they even had the chance to feed carrots
to horses. On top of that, they were treated to a presentation on comic illustration and how
illustrated books are produced.
The Concert and Awards Night was a triumphant conclusion of the final term and year end.
Well done, students and teachers, you made the occasion a huge success.
As this will be the last newsletter for the year, I would like to end it with a quote from Nelson
Mandela – “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world”.
Seasons greetings and Happy New Year.

Wembley’s Annual Concert
It was that time of the year again, when Wembley hosted its annual concert at
the Institut Sosial Malaysia (ISM) on the 2nd December 2017. The concert kicked
off at 5.30 pm, and ended at 10pm. The concert was also accompanied by an
Awards Night, where awards collected by the students throughout the year will
be given out to the fanfare of the parents and teachers.
The night began with the singing of the National Anthem, followed by a
Welcome Speech by our beloved Vice Principal Ms. Farah Abdullah. Thereafter,
‘’The Sixth’’ Wembley’s very own talented band consisting of students from year
10 performed covers of popular songs. The band consists of two singers, Emelly
and Shirley, one drummer, Viknesh, and two guitarists, Hee Mae Mae and Loh
Zheng Yue and not forgetting the pianist, Daeric Loi. The main reason this rock
band was formed is because of the love of music, and also to find an excuse to
spend some quality time together to create a close bond between friends.
The band’s brilliant performance was succeeded by a short motivational talk
by the ex-head boy of Wembley Academy - Shailesh Vijaindiran. The event
after was Choral Speaking by the junior students of Wembley, who
passionately performed a very funny poem about ‘Teachers’, who play a very
important role in a student’s education. The night then resumed with a
‘’Spelling Bee’’ finals for the juniors, with Hiba from year 4 coming out tops!
An evergreen song ‘Country Road’ was sung by the adorable year 2 students
who belted it out enthusiastically to the loud applause of the audience.
Afterwards, a graduation ceremony for the year 6 juniors was conducted; it
was a proud day for the students and parents involved!
Handing out of the awards punctuated the events now and then. Kaartheik
and Karyn, the emcees of the day had their work cut out for them –
announcing the recipients and also the running events.
Hang Xen Er, from year 10, took the top spot in the exciting senior spelling bee
finals! Thereafter, an entertaining event, K-pop dance commenced. K-pop or
Korean pop is a genre that embraces a range of Western and Korean
influences - with its techno beats and its signature synchronized and tightly
choreographed dance moves. The audience was totally impressed by the
energetic performance and gave the dancers a rousing applause.
One of highlights was a graduation ceremony for the seniors, ex-students of
Wembley who had done their IGCSE in the months of May/June, a warm and
touching reunion with all; then an insightful speech from the Top in World for IGCSE
Mathematics Recipient – Hang Jie Er from year 11S.
Finally, a presentation of Disney’s ‘Enchanted’ musical play. It was fun from the
beginning to end, and the cast is definitely talented – right from the main actors that
included Robert’s six year old daughter, Morgan played by Anabelle of year 2; Nancy,
Robert’s girlfriend ably played by Lee Yan Ni from year 9; the lovely Giselle, played
by Emelly from year 10, who did a fine piece of acting and sang ever so sweetly; the
suave Robert, played to the hilt by Viknesh from year 10; the fiery and passionate
Prince Edward played by Yong Jia Jin from year 9; the blundering antagonist
Nathaniel, humorously portrayed by Daeric Loi, whose main goal was to prevent
Edward from meeting his true love, and later to kill Giselle; and evil incarnate in the
form of Queen Narissa convincingly played by Gan Xin Yi; plus the cute furry
creatures, also students from year 2. Not forgetting the extras who played
noteworthy roles for example: Mathias of year 2 as the short grumpy man; Liew Wen
Kai as the old homeless man; Thurgga as the lady bus driver; and Loh Zheng Yue in
multiple roles – as a contractor, Jamaican singer and priest!
The night drew to a close with a speech from Wembley’s ex-head girl – Wong Kah
Ying, and a surprise rendition of ‘’You Raise Me Up’’ by the year 10s and cake cutting
ceremony organized by the new head boy, Daeric Loi.
However, the teachers sprung their own surprise – an exuberant dance to the song
of ‘Jai Ho’ which literally blew the minds of parents and students alike! Way to go
teachers!
And that wraps up the whole show!

Trick or Treat
Halloween: a night with costumes, fun and candies which happens only once each year on 31st October. This is the day where
souls rise from their realm and come into contact with the living. In Celtic history, farmers gave sacrifices and had bonfires
at night to chase away the ghoulish spirits, as well as hopes for the return of healthy growth of crops in the following year.
As this tradition passed down for generations, eventually instead of sacrifices, people started dressing up as the entities that
make up Halloween and go around begging for candies or playing tricks on one another.
This year’s exciting Halloween event was organised by Year 8A students, who were responsible for the activities and
games on the first floor, plus the Year 10 students who created and managed the haunted house on the second floor. To begin,
all students assembled at the hall where the emcees for this event, Aaron and Jia Jin gave a very entertaining introduction
about the day’s programme. In addition to the delightful games that were conducted, there was the most creatively decorated
pumpkin or ‘’Jack-O-Lantern’’ competition between classes. All classes came up with cool and interesting ‘’Jack-O-Lanterns’’,
which were a source of giggles and admiration! What’s more, there was a ‘’Guess the number of Candies’’ in the jar contest
between groups. The winning group took the jar, splitting the contents between its members.
On the first floor, the organisers had come up with a variety of thrilling games such as ‘’Charades’’ which almost
everyone is familiar with, and ‘’Monster Box Throw’’, the goal of this game was to get students to throw balls into the gaping
hole of the ‘’Monster’s jaw’’ and gain points; this game definitely required a good aiming skill to achieve the best result. We
also had a ‘’Concentration Game’’ for the juniors, that tested their memory. Every player first needed to memorize a set of cards
and later to match the various cards to those that had the same items; a strong memory is needed to accomplish the challenge.
In the ‘’Balloon Sweep Relay’’, the teams had to sweep a balloon from one point to the other using a broom; the team with the
quickest time won. It was hilarious to see students sweeping the balloons back and forth, struggling to maintain the trajectory
of their individual balloon.
Other noteworthy games were ‘’Apple Race’’ and ‘’Spider Race’’. In the former, the idea was to move an apple
with their nose; whereas in the latter, the goal was to blow the spider from start to finish using a straw. For ‘’Ghost Bottle
Bowling’’, students had to roll the ball within their lanes to hit the pins. ‘’Spooky Walk’’ is a quieter version of musical chairs,
with names and pictures of different supernatural creatures on each chair. Once the music stopped, all players had to quickly
get a seat. Then, a name will be drawn out, and the spooky character corresponding to the name called out had to withdraw
from the game. This went on until only one seat was left, and the student who kept the seat won the game.
Meanwhile, on the upper floor, the Year 10 students had set up an incredibly frightful haunted house which
included nightmarish characters from movies like “Conjuring 2”; Pennywise, the dancing ghastly clown from the movie “IT”, the
“Men in Black”, a sorceress, Joker, the famous antagonist in the movie “Batman” and the “Glowing Man”. The cold dark
environment and the sudden jump scares as well as the grim setting created an extremely spooky and macabre atmosphere.
Add on the characters, and all the visitors left this haunted house screaming and shuddering, taking back wonderful memories
of being scared out of their wits!
Can’t wait to see what next year’s Halloween will bring!
Field Trip Day Trip
On the 16th of November 2017, Wembley Academy organised a field trip to
UPM and Gempak Starz.
At UPM horse farm, we got to feed the horses carrots and bathe them by
hosing them down. This was a fascinating experience for all the students.
Later, the bus took us to another area of UPM. There, we got to learn about
hydroponic planting that was quite intriguing. Furthermore, we also got to
feed the owls and fishes which was an interesting experience.
At 11.30 am, we made our way to the Animals Anatomy Museum. The place
was filled with the bones of dead animals. Here, we got to see first-hand
skeletal and preserved body parts in detail. The most exciting part was
learning about bone structures and tissues using their new interactive
technology.
Next, we made our way to their ‘Light Gallery’ which was created by UPM’s
engineering students. We witnessed a fascinating display of lights in atoms
and molecules as well as organic life.
After lunch, we stopped at Gempak Starz. Gempak is a Malaysian
comic/gaming/hobby magazine produced by Art Square Creation. The
magazine is akin to a Japanese manga, with its similarity in artwork and
style. We toured their beautiful gallery that contained drawings and
illustrations of their comic books. This was indeed a unique experience. In
addition, we also got to buy their merchandise on discount.
At 4.30pm, the bus took us back to school and thus ended a very entertaining
and informative field trip.
Overnight Trip
On 16 November, Wembley Academy had an exciting field trip for students
above the age of 12 to Semenyih. Around fifty students and five teachers
arrived at Semenyih’s Eco-Venture Resort & Recreation.
After arrival, the students were briefed by the instructors about the activities
that were about to happen for the present and the next day. The students
then headed to a hall where they left their baggage. As starters, students were
put in groups for the first activity – a speed run where teams competed
against to complete the entire course in the quickest time possible. After
completing the first activity, the students then headed towards the second
station that was a ninja run. The course was challenging and thrilling; it made
us feel like contestants in the American Ninja programme!
A simple yet delicious lunch was served at about half past one. Afterwards,
tents were built by the students as guided by the instructors. Next, everyone
proceeded to the mud challenge followed by kayaking. It was an awesome
experience, wallowing in the mud and then thrashing the waters!
After the tiring activities, everyone showered and refreshed themselves, and
enjoyed dinner. After dinner, a fun campfire was organised at 8pm. Once it
was over, the students had the night time to themselves where they could do
whatever they wanted.
On the second day, everyone woke up at 6:30 am to go jungle trekking. The
trek started at 8 am and ended at 10 am. During the hike in the jungle, we
enjoyed the beautiful sceneries, and spent some time playing in the river at
the end of the journey. After returning to our campsite, we had lunch, packed
and returned the tents before departing from the place at 12:30 pm. Overall,
it was an amazing experience going back to basics and reconnecting with
Mother Nature!
Life Of The Day Trip
